I asked this question about a month after Moot caved in to /v/ and /vg/ and gave us our own board, but I'm curious about how much the demographics have/have not changed.

What board did you come from? Forechin as a whole is a cesspool, we all know that, but what brought YOU here? a/s/l not needed, but it's cool.

I'm thirty years old, I'm a /gentoo/man by trade and by nature, and I came here immediately after Moot announced the introduction of this board. The /vg/ emulation general was my only other comfy spot before this. To be honest, I come here immediately instead of /g/ now, because /g/ has slowly turned into a damned smartphone/OS/headphone buyer's guide. I actually LIKE the slow nature of /vr/, because I don't have the time to be on forechin daily.

>> No.920172

I came here because the fanboy bullcrap usually ended up destroying any talk of older systems because none of the sides would shut up. Also, you forgot that /g/ has also become a "LOOK AT MY ICONLESS CLI LINOOX DESKTOP WITH DEVIANTART WALLPAPER" board too.

>> No.920182

95% of my 4chan browsing is on /fit/. Stopped in here when I saw the announcement and I quite like it. I've always been fond of older games and this board has encouraged me to dig up my old stuff and start playing it again. I've also started biking around town to yard sales on the weekends, which allows me to get some cardio in while looking for treasure

30 here as well. I can't relate to most of the threads in /v/ and I can't into /c/ anymore. Forced to emulate but i live vicariously through collectors. This is my home board now and it was made for me. (Now I will shut up and continue lurking)

>> No.920218

I'm 32 and used to mainly lurk /b/ and /v/, occasionally /x/ but I would only post when I could contribute something relevant or add to a dump. Got really tired of /v/ being /v/ and bought some recently released games so I didn't lurk /v/ for about 3 months, when I came back there was a sticky linking here. Came here a couple months ago and now this is the only board I lurk anymore.

Honestly I did and still do get a kick out of the SEGA vs. Nintendo guys here at each others throats, mainly because It's what I grew up around, me and my friends burning each other for having the other system but what it all came down to was my friends still played my SNES and I still played their Genesis and each of our systems had jellyrage inducing games when the other platform got the better game version.

I also got a ton of great info from you bros as far as current good emulators, great unbiased info on portable emulation systems (just got a jxd s7300b 2 weeks ago and I fucking love it, shy of the shit battery life) and the general vibe here just seems a lot more welcoming, both because of and in spite of the overtones.

I just feel like I belong here more.

I used to lurk /mu/ a lot. I see that that place is better now than it was before this place opened, but back then it was such a cesspool of shitposting that I can't even bring myself lurk there, anymore.

It would have been nice if the mods showed some semblance of giving a shit about that board, last summer.

Really, 4chan's always been a place I'd use to scan recommendation threads and the like, so when something new pops up that I can use I start checking it out more often again. I'd never been much in it for the "community," though this place is almost making me change my mind. Almost.

I'm 36. Mainly kept an eye on /b/ for trends and /rs/ but I had a baby right after 4chan had /vr/ so I got back into a hobby I can mainly do at home and with my wife and new son while out.

I already had a significant collection from when I was younger but /vr/ has gotten me filling in some gaps. I got a pvm and also a crt projector (my wife wasn't too happy about that one) and discovered how damn good the Wii is for emulation.

Once the weather breaks I'll be continuing my refurbs on my arcade machines. Planning to repair my model 1 Sega CD and X'eye next after I do some work on the house and maybe actually mount the big projector. I haven't decided whether to just mount it up against the back porch roof or to try to build a little cart for it out of a double wide wherlchair (that I have yet to find)

>> No.920279

I had been posting on /v/ for years but the last two years in particular it had become almost unbearable being there. The level of shit-flinging became even more than it used to be, and it is now truly the worst it has ever been. Ever since /vr/ appeared, I pretty much stopped going to /v/. I check /v/ only for when something new and crazy happens like the Mega man announcement in Smash and pretty much stick to lurking. I'm a much more active poster on /vr/.

Other than that the only other boards I visit are /h/ and /gif/. 4chan has become my primary site for that kind of stuff and I am forever thankful for it.

Exactly. Toolcop started to shit-post endlessly, so all the underage summer faggots thought it was alright to do the same. And the mods didn't do a damn thing about it for way too long that by the time they started to improve things all the oldfags saw no reason to stay. I would go back, except now I have no desire because the mods let things go to ruin in the first place.

The people who lurk /vr/ are too smart to mimic that sort of shit-posting, and the mods here are too diligent to let things slide for too long. Even with summer in full swing, this place is still pretty damn good.

Ever since I hit 18 and got my first job, I started buying those SNES/N64 games I loved but could just play by renting. I also bought a NES, a GBC, a GBA and a GameCube soon after, and started my collection. /v/ just isn't the place for me, never went to /vg/ before. /vr/ is where I feel at home.

I came from /mlp/, visited this board the day it got announced out of curiosity -- I avoided /v/ like the plague -- and I was immediately surprised by how nice the board was. I don't even go to /mlp/ anymore, just here. This board got me into some game series I had never tried before, notably NES games because my oldest console was an SNES.

This board isn't as much as a gleaming beacon as it was -- shitposters (or rather people feeding shitposters and causing their number to increase) and retro police and all that -- but it was always expected for that to happen, and I still greatly enjoy the tone of most of this board.

Since you asked for a/s/l, 18/M/'Murrica.

Well thanks!

Regardind that, I did try jumping in the CRT Shader-Filter bandwagon but I didn't like the way my games were looking with all those scanlines.

Nowadays I just buy games and play them in my consoles on my lovely CRT TV I still have. Nothing beats real hardware. If I need to emulate any SNES game that doesn't run on a flashcard, I just emulate on the Wii, again on a CRT TV, with a controller adapter.

Well it's currently sitting on the floor in the baby's room which is sort of storage right now since he's not old enough to really need it yet. The house was mine before we got married but I was considerate enough to make the basement my man cave since my old place was 100% man cave and that's a pretty good compromise, especially since I've promised to turn the loft into a walk in closet she's always wanted. I already had a projector down in the basement. In fact, it was one of the first things I moved in and we have fond memories of watching laserdiscs down there together. I played super mario bros religiously, searching for every secret and nook and cranny, and I ended up being able to run it in roughly 6-7 minutes before I got sick of it.
I've always preferred good old technology like CRT's and mechanical keyboards. I used to browse /g/ a lot, but now /vr/ is my main place.

This is a great thread and I don't want to stir up "muh scanloins" but I will say that even though technically scanlines take up 50% of the beamed signal, when I (and I think most people) adjust our real rgb displays we end up with about 25% actual black space with "bloom" although bright colors bloom more than dark colors making for a distinctly analog looking display. I dunno if there's a filter that replicates that or not.

30yrs old fag here.

I find that /vr/ is a nice board, if a bit slow. But that's cool. It kind of keeps the wrong folks out. Hate to sound so elitist, but I think most of you know what I mean without me having to elaborate.

My main board is /co/, I've been more involved with comics than I have been with video games, but it's not like I don't wish I had more money growing up to be part of the cool kids and their Sega Nintendomatics. As a kid I playing arcade machines wherever I found them, and in a way I feel lucky that I grew up with them instead of Nintendo at home. I'd played Street Fighter 2 for a year at the arcade before I played it on SNES, and when I finally did I was severely disappointed. But then there's the stuff that wasn't in the arcades, that's the stuff I missed out on.

I bought some retro games in my 20s, filled in the gaps best I could, I at least have the advantage of forming my own opinion of something as an adult rather than be hindered by biased childhood nostalgia.

18 year old. I used to browse /v/, /co/ and /a/ at least a year ago but I left /v/ after summer 2012 for /vg/. Still browse /a/ and /co/ every once in a while. Discovered the board a few weeks after it's creation and stayed here ever since. Mainly in it for retro discussion, info, Metroid threads and the occasional Doom deathmatch server on the Doom threads. I had an uncle that had a bunch of games and shit and I used to learn my stuff by talking to him and playing the games he kept in his closet stowed away, fucker had a TG16 with the CD, a Saturn, a Dreamcast, a NES, a PS1, and hell, even a Super Grafx with the CD addon as well. I mostly inherited that shit and keep most of it stowed away in my room.

Once I get a job I'll start collecting for those consoles. Mostly to play the games as well since I don't want to bother with emulation for TG and Super Grafx. Been thinking about getting a Genesis and a Master System too, since those are the two major consoles I've missed out on.

I also have a boxfull of EGMs and NEXT generation's from back in the day, I would scan them, but they're pretty tattered so I don't want to risk getting them broken.

I cruised around /sp/, and still hang out in various lakers/redskins game threads, but the main reason I'm on this board is because I love retro videogames. Newfriends have begun spreading autism and playing cyber police, which I understood would happen, but in all honesty, this is one of the better communities on this site. I can actually have a discussion about videogames without 14 year olds spewing memes everywhere, and there is a sense of teamwork in finding secrets, such as nightmare ned when the board first started, and recently with Chu Teng. My only complaint is that when /v/ crashed a while ago, a wave of idiots began thinking its cool to come here and I'm afraid it will drive the quality posters away.

24. Started browsing in 06/07 cant remember. Mainly lurked on /b/, started going on all the other boards just to figure them out. Hung around /ck/, /x/, /b/ and /v/. I learned quickly that /b/ was pretty terrible but still checked it once a day or so. Left /x/ since it all became bullshit (how to summon succubus and shitty creepypasta threads). Started browsing /tv/ and /v/ mostly. Then /vg/ happened and /v/ became a bit better but /vr/ sealed the deal. I hardly go on /v/ now

I've never really had a home board on 4chan. The board I contributed the most to would be /tr/. The reason I came to /vr/? You guys just like video games, and that's good enough for me.

>> No.921120

Came in from /co/ which I check sometimes, which helps with my job, but this is my home.

I'm collecting what little I can get my hands on, I've built a fairly decent collection, have a hobby room set up with a projector and a few consoles, and have recently started to emulate. Trying out some systems I never really played/don't own, like the PSX and Saturn. Having trouble but have yet to resort to modding a PSX and burning the games.

I was wary at first because /v/ wasn't really that good, but seriously guys this board is just what I needed. It's a little rough around the edges, but it's great. I'm constantly finding out about gems from you guys, and sharing good games and experiences is what this place is all about. It's a little comfy

Sounds like what happened to /x/ back in 2008, /b/ went down and everyone from there flooded other boards and /x/ was one of the popular ones them to go to. After that /b/ started holding "raids" on /x/ like every other week for about a year and it's never been the same sense.

I recently played Gods and Metal Mutant. Feels fucking good, man.

21 years old. Mostly fucked about in /v/, the occasional /vg/ thread (mostly /gsg/) and /e/. Came over to /vr/ because hey, retro board, that's my bag. Gaming on a shitty laptop most of my life gravitated me towards the older PC games, and I grew up on the SNES and the N64, so "my games" almost entirely fall under the /vr/ umbrella. Add the fact that we have pinball threads here, that the GameCenter CX general landed here and the slower pace (which means I can make a post, go to bed, get up in the morning and read the replies to the post, something I really like), and I'm completely sold.

Lets see, before this I was on /v/ most of the time but wasn't really content with having to browse for so long just to find a semi-coherent thread that hadn't derailed yet. I couldn't really migrate to any other board because my passion lied in video games. I would occasionally browse some of the /g/ programming threads but never really ventured beyond that. Initially, when this board was announced, I thought I might check it out but I wasn't sure if I would fit in too well since I'm only 19. I was a member of a broke immigrant family that wasn't keen on supporting my video game hobby at a young age. This means that I was playing a Genesis when the Gamecube was in style and a GBC when everyone had a GBA, so I did actually spend a lot of time playing board relevant content as a kid. This also means, however, that I missed out on some cool stuff. I never owned an SNES or N64, for instance, so I enjoy playing the stuff that I hear about on this board.

I frequent /e/, /vg/ for the one or two series I enjoy following, /g/ sometimes but I've mostly stopped for the reasons OP mentioned, I'm one of the few souls on /p/, and sometimes I hit up /m/ because their anime tastes sometimes very occasionally match mine to some extent (too bad we can't have an anime retro board...) I hardly even touch /v/ and have practically abandoned it since /vr/ has been opened.

I'm 27 and I'm a dude if that matters at all. Like most people I started out on /b/, that was back in around 05 or 06, can't quite seem to pinpoint it. Then, when I got fed up with /b/ after a few years, I started exploring the other boards, mainly those relating to my interests back then; /v/ and /tv/. My browsing has usually been spread out accross several boards since then, as it still is today, and I also visited a few other boards, such as /mu/ and /co/, but my main stomping ground back then was /tv/, which I was inexplicably addicted to for a few years(the place was and is still shit). Then, when I got fed up again, I moved to /g/, adding other boards such as /lit/ and /pol/ as they trickled in. I also started browsing /ck/ at one point, liking the practicality and applicability it adds to my daily life(I can get recipe suggestions there, not eat the same shit everyday, etc). However, since /vr/ has opened up, it has been my main stomping ground. I like the slow pace of the board, mixed with its friendly users(that's you, guys!). It also got me back in touch with retro gaming(the 90s/early 00s was the period I was the most active as a gamer, basically from my childhood with the NES as my first console in 89 to the PS2 era in my late adolescence onto my early 20s. I also got into emulation as a teenager). So basically, to sum it up, I visited and still visit all the boards mentioned above to some degree(including a few others to a lesser extent, such as /gif/, /sci/, /tg/, /x/, etc.), but my main stomping grounds, where I lurk regularly, have been /b/ -> /tv/ -> /g/ -> /vr/.

Recently turned 22. Boards I visited were /v/, /vg/ and /g/. These days I'm usually coming here, and accidentally going to the others out of impulse.

I really liked the emulation threads on /v/ (and eventually /vg/). I'll admit to being an accuracy purist, but that may be because I work in game development on the technical side of things (particularly in game portability, where accuracy is a major factor...), so I do like seeing proper preservation of the hardware, blah blah blah.

One thing that was in those threads that really stuck here was the platform variety, both in the actual consoles and the operating systems people use day-to-day. As a Linux/Mac user, that makes me a happy guy. (Noticing a lot of people from /g/, so this may be why!)

With so many technically proficient people around, I'm surprised we don't see a lot of emulation _development_ here as well. I'm still holding out for someone making a *nix port of the Project64 2.1 source, wish I had the time for it myself!

24 years old. Frequented /v/ and /mlp/, but have been visiting both less often, latter moreso due to diminishing content and slipping from the fandom. /v/, while amusing sometimes, is pretty much a cesspool.

I came to /vr/ out of general curiosity. Stayed since the community is pretty damn cool here. It's also nice to have some genuinely awesome conversations here. It also helps that the threads don't move dickspeed fast like /v/ and not 404 so quickly. We can put all of our thoughts together in a single post rather than haphazardly stringing together some quick sentences in hopes of making a quick point before the thread 404s.

It also helps me to recollect some of my memories here for some endeavors of mine regarding retro games (namely writing). My retro collection isn't that extensive, mostly taking up a single level on my self, and all games owned since my childhood. Was a NES/SNES/PS1 kid. My interest in playing collecting retro games really grew in the past few years, partly from some friends of mine, and another from my lack of interest in the current gen offerings.

Originally reddit, then /b/, then found here. I like it here a lot more - good discussions by interested people, not a ton of 13 year olds, not a ton of shitty attitudes, and active enough to get good threads/discussion.

I love retrogaming. Quite frankly, I can't afford to spend 60 bucks every time the newest thing comes out, or the newest console, or WHATEVER.

I have games that I like to play over and over. They just happen to be mostly for SNES, GB/C, and GBA.

However, I have the LARGEST backlog EVER of stuff I've been needing to play that has built up over the last 5-6 years. Life has been busy and I am taking the bar exam in a little over a week. After that, I have months of nothing, so if anyone has any great suggestions or endorsements for SNES/GBA/GB/GBC, throw them my way. (including VC releases I guess).

I'm sort of into and not into retro gaming. I own a few retro consoles, mostly my brothers. (Mega Drive, Gameboy, SNES (recently got that), and N64) I had a PS1, but my brother broke that.

I fixed up a Mega Drive recently, the first console I ever played on, I also bought a fuck ton of games for it. I started out with Vectorman, and now I have nearly all the Sonic games for it and more.

I want to collect a play a lot of games, games like Super Metroid, and OOT on cartridge on a real TV, but until then I usually use emulators.

I also came here with false hopes that the Dreamcast would be considered retro, too bad it isn't, really is the best console ever made, and I wish I could discuss it here, without that worst part of the /vr/ community shouting "NOT RETRO"

Original wave of newfags here.
Came to 4chan in 2005, slowly watched it collapse under his own weight.
As most people back then, you either went to /a/ and/or /b/, I started off with /b/ and as it became the cesspool it is now, I along with most of the users migrated to /v/. Then we all watched /v/ fall apart all over again, and last year I hardly even mustered up the interest to go there. Then the new boards were announced and I came to /vr/ and am slowly enjoying /gd/ as well.
This place is great, but in these last two or three weeks I am starting to feel some changes going on as well, there is some some underlying bitterness in most discussions that usually didn't happen in the first months, I might just be looking too much into things, or maybe I'm just too paranoid, not wanting to see yet another board falling apart.

came from /b/ as a starting point on 4chins then moved on to /v/ which I frequent but then found interest in old vidya topics on here. I enjoy garage sale hunting and flea market shopping with my buds and seeing pick ups from various people on here always intrigues me on how much they go it for or how oblivious/stubborn the seller was. I usually lurk around here but it's nice talking to others of some classics.

Been farting around 4chan since about '05. Mostly just lurking /v/, making the occasional post in any threads that I was interested in (retro games etc.). I noticed this board one day on the home page and I haven't looked back since. This is one of the only boards on this site that aren't just a dick waving contest. The fact that it's a slower board is great, Threads don't 404 before I get a chance to share my opinion on something. Generally /vr/ knows what it's talking about and is very helpful if you ask a question.

Good job guys keep it up!

I live in Portugal and dog vendors are a huge epidemic here, every street corner is filled with them and seeing how little they demand for payment at the end of the day is really driving all the other businesses around them to the ground. Usually a scratch in head and some biscuits at the end of the day will keep them happy. They are also very cute so people prefer doing business with them, even if most of them times they will sell you pre-chewed games and find it really hard to understand the concept of money and change, but they can handle it, they just need a little help some times.
They absolutely refuse to do business with cats though, which makes it really hard for me to buy games.

I don't like the 1999 rule because it makes no sense not including the dreamcast, but you just have stick with it, everyone having their own opinnion on what's retro or not would make this board into a huge mess.

I don't want to talk about my age as I don't want to sound like I am coming off as "so mature for my age" but let's just say that I have one year ahead before I can legally come to 4chan.

I can't quite remember when I came to 4chan exactly but I do know that /v/ was my first board here. After a while I remember the flood of feels that came and it made me go looking for a new board. I have stuck with /co/ the most because I like animation and any comics besides cape ones in general. I also tried going to /mu/ and /tv/ to learn about some obscure album/show I never heard of. And while I do enjoy reading manga (Jojo is my favorite) I couldn't stand going to /a/ due to always being threads about some girly show that I don't care (but I did stay if I found a Jojo thread).

Right now /v/ is hardly the main source for vidya discussion I use since I found some small site that mixes sarcastic humor but with truthful analysis. Really the only reason I like going to /vr/ is that it's more geared toward actual discussion to games then autism/filename/consolewar/whatever general thread /v/ likes to have.

As far as games I play I am more of a mixed style as one minute I like playing Armed Police Batrider and then Hitman:Blood Money. I don't have any favorite genre or game for that matter but I can say that the PS1 (or PSX if you like to be picky) has my biggest number of games I like (which coincidentally happens to be my first console I ever had). So yeah that's all I can say.

Also I don't know about you guys but I enjoy playing Supercade games (besides fighters as well) and if anyone likes I would love to play some Mars Matrix or Aliens Vs Predator with you.

Might as well partake in this nonsense. 21, been lurking around 4chan since 2005, spent most of that time on /v/. Got fed up of /v/ in about 2010, but kept lurking it anyways, watching it go further and further downhill.

Eventually decided to jump ship here shortly after it was announced and had a civil discussion about vidya on 4chan for the first time in years.

I occasionally go back to /v/, because I do still play modern games, but it's an irredeemable cesspool at this point; and the few genuinely interesting threads devolve into shitflinging within the first few posts.

Much like >>920317 and >>920517 said, well over 24 hours ago, people joke about "neo /v/" and its ilk, but when even threads about well-liked Nintendo games get derailed by the usual "nintenyearold" back-and-forth, you really do have to wonder.

I think the pic in the OP is too flimsy, no one would ever make that because those thumb drives could break off easily. Make em cards that plug in easily and it'll be better.

I came here from /v/, though I dabbled in all kinds of other boards. /vr/ is my new home base, as being on an actual good board has helped me enjoy video games much more. I love that it's a slow board too, I don't have to constantly be here to catch threads. More over, you can actually get your thread responded to, instead of watching everything you want to discuss go 404 in 10 minutes.

/v/ has been becoming worse and worse since god know how long, and the splits only made it worse; Things that used to be jokes are now serious as fuck (especially the whole "master race" bullshit, if you think about it it doesn't make any sense)

I like to see how /vr/ didn't turn the way /vg/ did.

I come from /v/ mostly because that is the topic that interests me most, though I don't have any recent consoles and I find myself always playing games from the time period I was born into (I am 26 years old so not surprising that it is 16 bit era and afterwards). I came here because as said I don't own anything recent, possibly because it doesn't interest me as much, and I like to see people talk about games I use to play or eventually played well over a decade later through emulation.

Sharing tips on how to get through levels or how to best use the games mechanics to your advantage and seeing people triumph over a game.

>I actually LIKE the slow nature of /vr/, because I don't have the time to be on forechin daily.
Same here, also shows that the bulk of these threads cannot survive on /v/ due to how frequent responses are. I can talk to a person and have posts range from many hours from one another and not worry about the thread 404'ing.

I still want to 1CC an arcade game. Given more time I am sure I will triumph. I am also one of the resident SaGafags.

I used to come to this site, only lurking for the porn pics. Later I noticed /v/ then /vg/ then /vr/.
A few months ago I started actually posting. I can feel myself being grabed and I can't leave.

But my opinion:

/v/ is full of shitposting, pointless platform wars, gamer celebrities/pink news, anita, no gf feels, nice handheld faggot, diamond dogs, ff9 guardette, late night Stu, multiple steam sale threads and queries that are pointless to anyone else.

/vg/ is awesome for those who have the game and can keep talking about its intricassies and it's good for selecting a game to play because usually, if the game is THAT talked, it must be a good investment.

/vr/ is where it's at. much less shitposting, awesome to learn about titles i know i can play on a toaster, reminiscing ye olde nostalgic days etc.

I vaguely browsed /v/ to keep up with random vidya news and then /vr/ was made so I browsed /vr/ for older interesting titles I missed and then I got pissed at /vr/ for having so many pretentious fucktards who based their pretensions on almost nothing but a very light amount of intelligence (which I guess is somewhat fair because video games is filled to the brim with retards, from fans to developers) and that was about it. All I really do here is argue about game design and mechanics and tell people they're morons for hailing shitty jrpgs as the greatest of titles without being able to explain why outside of utter nonsense like their 'great stories' and 'interesting combat' or even shit as stupid as 'You just don't like jrpgs'.

/v/ use to have decent discussion of lesser known titles and classic games, but as time went on things really went downhill and turned into constant fights over what ever trash had been hyped that month. Far more often I was running into anons who genuinely had no grasp of the fundamental history/technology that games were built upon, and I suspect a good number of them were underage. I just got tired of it and was ready to leave 4chan entirely, but then /vr/ popped up and quickly turned into everything I was hoping for... A board for people who actually love games.
