Why do some people dislike this boss? I think that an endurance arena is a decent way to end the game.

Ehhhh, it's about on par with all of Doom 2. I don't think anyone's an actual diehard doom 2 fan, as in solely for doom 2 and not user made wads.

I just hate that there's so much waiting for the opportunity to damage it and that it becomes unwinnable if you mess up too many times. It also feels less like a bossfight and more like following some kind of checklist.
I do like the idea that you can't just mow the boss down with BFG like in the first game. Then again the bosses in the first game actually have a chance to be more fun if you pistol start, unlike Icon of Sin.

DOOM 1 boss fights were great because they were just big monsters you could pump rockets into until they died. boss fights dont need to be hard or have gay puzzle shit, just give me a big demon to kill to punctuate the experience.

It's minimally interactive and you can't play it a different way.

Also, the design logic castrates itself conceptually. The entire gimmick rests on being unable to shoot upward, which is oddly like leaning on an engine limitation like a feature, and doesn't even play by enemy rules because shooting upward is supposed to automatically happen. So the wall is trying to look like a giant intimidating enemy, but nobody can feel that way because the mechanics used to fight it strictly reinforce that it's just a wall and not a real thing because it literally wouldn't work otherwise. And they reinforce that the engine is limited instead of playing to its strengths.

Because they slog through it spamming quicksaves and don't experience any tension of doing a no-death no save run in UV vanilla, or doing a pistol start no save.
Can't take anyone's opinion on classic doom seriously if they use vertical aim, opengl, vaseline filters, and spam quicksaves in jizzydewm.

Obviously add some special handling for this boss inside the engine, like they've done with D'Sparil in Heretic, who reacts differently to different weapons.

>> No.9222937

Only the first Doom was really fun to play/explore. 2 looks like a bootleg and 3 is just a Halo ripoff with demons.

I want to try 64, but my Game Pass expired yesterday and I will wait until M$ offer me another 3 months for 5 bucks.

Make a placeholder enemy that counts as a real enemy for the weak spots, so you shoot up at it as needed like any enemy. Use switches and level puzzles to retract armor covering said weak spots. The last one is where the brain is, so we are exposing the brain on it. Increase the spawning every time one of these phases is complete, so that the time pressure of the boss is more threatening. Make the thing emit a deafening roar every now and then.

I always considered it iconic, since the first time I played in the 90s, there's this urgency to keep moving, because the bugs gonna keep on coming, just like in Aliens

>> No.9225113

Icon of Sin was always shit and any IoS map will always be shit. The only acceptable variant is the one in Plutonia.

It's what you get when you dish out a quick sequel for bucks and don't to invest time and effort in an actual boss material.
