If X4 were just a little more challenging, it'd probably be the highlight of the series.

Blood Omen is a Zelda-type overhead adventure in which you're a vampire who must drink the blood of his foes (or innocents) to refill health, which constantly depletes because of the hunger. You can also take a few different forms and cast a number of spells. The world is huge, and it's fucking FULL of secrets, many of which enhance your abilities or give you new ones entirely. There are whole cities I've never seen, and I've beaten this game a good few times. The story and the voice acting are top notch.

Soul Reaver is the sequel to Blood Omen and one of my favorite games of all time. It's kind of a 3D platformer puzzle adventure hack'n'slash, I guess? You play an unholy abomination that feeds on souls, and you're on a revenge quest against the player character from the first game. You can shift between the physical plane and the spiritual plane and have different abilities and limitations in each, which makes for some really unique puzzles. Again, great story and some of the best voice acting you'll hear in a vidja game, let alone one from 1997.

Tragically under-appreciated games.

Jade Cocoon (Immersive monster collection game. Can mix monsters to gain certain a certain look. I mixed a turtle with a bird, than a couple generations of lizard to get a dragon, then put a blue scale skin on the whole thing. And they get bigger as they level up.)
Threads of Fate (Play either a bitchy witch or a shape-shifting fighter in a pretty good action game with RPG elements.)
Breath of Fire 3 (In my opinion the best of the non-FF JRPGs on PS1 Story is good, combat is boss for a JRPG. Learn your enemy's moves, mix dragon genes together for different shapes to change into. Five genes, ten? Try eighteen. Become everything from a tiny worm-like dragon, to a massive behemoth, to a fucking golden-haired super saiyan)

Soul Reaver was probably my personal favorite PS1 game back in the day. I will admit though that it hasn't aged well. The controls are incredibly clunky by modern day standards.

It has a PC version though. I'm not sure how that plays.
