What are some JRPGs wtih REALLY quick battles? It's one of the things Dragon Quest 1-3 did so right that I've yet to see another RPG even come close to. There's literally no point in forcing a player to watch slow animations during battles if the game has a grindy gameloop and a high encounter rate. How did everyone fail so fucking magnificently at such an obvious feat of game design? If you want the player to grind and explore the battles should be quick and to the point.

My favorite part about SMT 3 is how quick the battles are
Especially relative to something like Final Fantasy 7 where it feels like it takes a full 30 seconds to get into a fight

All the SMT games have auto-battle and they really do fly by.

FF6. Just hold attack during regular battles and they're over in seconds.
As for bosses - you just cast vanish and then doom and it insta-kills them.

No but "Dragon Quest" fans I notice pretend that Dragon Warrior never happened... For me it's always Dragon Warrior, that was the USA release name and once the USA releases changed the name they changed the art style and I lost interest in the series by that point and think it was better as a western art style for that genre.

Tldr to me it's Dragon warrior and fans memory hole it on here all the time, so I made that.

You probably don't care but they also wanted those early western releases to be named Dragon Quest. The only reason it didn't happen was because of a trademark dispute with the DragonQuest tabletop RPG.

Most Famicom RPGs really. Play Mother (Earthbound Beginnings), Lagrange Point, Megami Tensei II, FF1-2-3, Metal Max, those are the best ones, then if you still want more you can always play Ninjara Hoi!, Jubei Quest, SD Keiji - Blader, Sweet Home, Dream Master, Heracles no Eiko II: Titan no Metsubo, Musashi No Bouken, Ganbare Goemon Gaiden 2 - Tenka no Zaihou.

On the boxes and manuals and stuff yeah, but in the games not so much. The first game was relatively tame in its visual design, but Dragon Warrior II had some highly goofy, Toriyama-looking monsters. Like look at the weird boobs on those batboons. There was Dragon Ball all over you as you played those games, whether you knew it or not.

I dunno though, if the "of experience points thou needest seven" stuff in the text wasn't done in future games (I wouldn't know) then yeah that's a pretty big change. But the art in the physical package, come on, does that even count?

So, it sounds more like the opposite is true; YOU get mad when people call it Dragon Quest because you've convinced yourself that the series was meant to look like a TSR Gold Box knock-off.

Which is funny, because everyone in the western fandom is fine keeping the original western names for stuff and some people even refer to the first game's character as "The Dragon Warrior" instead of "Descendant of Loto".

I think it was more of a "we don't have the time or money to spend in court convincing the patent office that OUR game called Dragon Quest is different enough from THEIR game called Dragon Quest" thing. Like how Nintendo was going to Bolero as the title theme for the first Zelda, but had to make a new song because it wouldn't enter Japan's public domain until the month AFTER it needed to ship.

From DQ8 onward, the general tradition is for all characters from the first two DQ games (and to a lesser extent the third) to speak like they did in the original Dragon Warrior releases, though it's a little less overdone these days. They also switched the legendary hero's name back to Erdrick instead of sticking with Loto like the GBC ports had.

I think its more of a "yes yes, I get it; the dragon summons the spirits of the northern gods of sorrow to hit me for 9473 damage. I don't need the 2 minute fmv each time he does this" thing. When you fight the Dragon Lord at the end of DQ1, all he needs to do to be menacing is for you to hear the 1 second long "breaths fire intensely" sound effect twice in a row.

Funny how stupid that turned out in DQ11. For the 2D mode time travel sidequests that take place in DQ1/2 you get the old english talk, supposedly because those are ancient times.

Then, you find out DQ11 is actually, spoiler, a prequel to 1 except they all talk modern day english.

> How did everyone fail so fucking magnificently at such an obvious feat of game design?

As for answering this, it's pretty simple. The genre took a shift away from gameplay and towards visuals/story gradually with each generation. The epitome of that being the PS1/2 RPGs with literally minutes long summons, or generally super detailed and super slow battle animations (the worst I've played between Metal Saga, HOLY SHIT if you don't like slow battles don't play that game.)

Gameplay gradually became less of the central focus like it was originally. Easier games, less random encounters, and it's what players wanted.

If I recall right, DQ3 has everybody talk normally (at most with the usual silly accents) and only when you fall through worlds to reach Alefgard do you get the Ye Olde English from DQ1 and 2.

Shit is so fucking whack. It's what made me write off all JRPGs as being shit back in the late 90s and early 00s when FF7 and it's retarded stepchildren were all the rage. Going back and playing the old dragon quest games, Breath of Fire and a few of the old FF games (V mainly) made me realize that they can be really fun for mindlessly grinding away while listening to podcasts at if the battles are quick and the game allows you to explore. Why the hell don't they just put a fast forward button on all that shit? Seems like such a no brainier to me. Why anyone would want to watch 30 second animations every time a random encounter happens is beyond me.
