20 years is retro
Zelda 1 is to WW as WW is to BotW give or take a few years, youre getting old anon

remasters are lame
people bitch about remakes but at least they do something different, what's the point of a remaster when you can just port the game? feels like paying 60 bucks for a couple romhacks

>> No.9211485

The bloom doesn't bother me but WW HD makes an already pathetically easy game even easier

The TP HD remaster is a better remaster because even though it can't completely fix all of TP's painful mediocrity, it definitely takes the edge off some of the worst tendencies - allows you to quick switch to wolf link, neuters the tears of light segments, gives you a bigger wallet, adds the ghost lantern, etc

Anyway

Best and worst retro remasters?
Best is a pretty short list
I really like Black Mesa, Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1+2 was good
I enjoyed the Links Awakening remaster even though it runs like shit
I very much enjoyed the recent Klonoa 1+2 remaster

Worst is a fucking gargantuan list, the worst of the worst is hands down Warcraft 3 Reforged - most of these cash grab remasters I just ignore but WC3 Reforged actually gets under my skin and pisses me off. Not only is the game pure shit, not only did they outright lie about the scope of the remaster and the content of the game, but it actually irreparably fucked up the original Warcraft 3 for all time. Unbelievable that anyone thought that was an acceptable product to ship, it boggles my mind.

This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games, including consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games. Retro gaming means platforms launched in 2001 and earlier, and official game titles for those platforms released no later than December 2007 (homebrew console games made after this date will be permitted).
> The Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, and Sony PlayStation 2 will now be considered "retro"

WW HD is shit other than fixing some glaring issues with the original (the sailing, the player's movement speed, the triforce quest meant to hide the cut 8 dungeons is removed entirely), and removed Tingle Tuner content instead of tweaking it (would have been an amazing use of the Wii U gamepad)

It didn't add any new content, either. Some of WW's romhacks have had more ambition than it.
WW had a ton of cut content that would have made for an interesting remake, and would have obvious places to add them, not to mention Nintendo has assets of them that were used with some modifications in Phantom Hourglass and Twilight Princess. It would at least remove the repetitive aspect of ugly N64 assets for each minor island / ship interior / ship wreck / underground minor dungeon. As it was in 2003, the game struggled to justify its shortcomings and all the remake did was replace the duct tape covering the seams with less ugly duct tape that covers them even less. Now it looks even more unfinished (you can interact with invisible Tingle Tuner statues)

This is the one. Truly horrendous, and still it had its fans. Everyone involved should be shot in the vagina

There's something hilarious in the fact that the solution to "Sailing is too boring" in Wind Waker was to just invent an item that basically removes it from the game utterly.

i'm fine with them if i just want to play the game without the bullshit of having to play around with the settings, searching for a sourceport, etc.

granted pricing & availability of the original is usually my deciding factor in whether or not i buy a remaster.

Time is scary, don’t think about it just let it happen. We are time-locked oldfaggots now, simple as. The boomers were right about aging. Zoomers, you’re next.

That being said:
There is no commonly accepted criteria for what is and isn’t retro in the realm of video games, as much as many of us imagine it as a 4th or 5th gen cutoff.

What is commonly accepted is the criteria for what is and isn’t “vintage”. Vintage is an item between 20-25 years old (your middle school tripp pants) and considering 20 years ago I thought NES was vintage/retro (in USA only had its 16th birthday in 2002, 18th in Japan) then yes, comparatively Wind Waker truly is old enough to be officially considered “vintage” when Balloon Fight wasn’t in 2002. Pretty unbelievable. IIRC Hot Topic started selling NES belt buckles around 2004/2005, right around the time it was reaching it’s 20th anniversary.

I think also because the leap in graphical fidelity between 1982 and 2002 for example is so enormous compared to the increasingly diminishing returns between 2002 and 2022 that it warps our perspective of what we (boomers/gen x/millennials) consider “retro”. Something from 2001/2002 can hold it’s own scaled up on a modern display in 2022. Wind Waker is a great example compared to what we’ve even seen of the upcoming BotW2. BotW is definitely higher fidelity…but it’s far more subtle.

I think a strong argument can be made for a hard 4th gen or 5th gen cutoff being the definition for “retro” in video games, but some organizing body would have to give it weight.

Until then, 2002 and before is all by definition “vintage” and “retro” and we are old pieces of shit.
