So, foreignbros... The MSX. Tell me about it. Not the Wikipedia version or some lists I'm already looking at that stuff. What was it like to play games on it?

I've been a console gamer since 1980 and I'm hoping it's going to be a lot more of a console experience than some of the other early stuff I missed out on and am discovering for the first time. Commodore leaves me a little flat and I'm praying to the gaming gods that I'll discover the Japanese style is the spice I'm lacking

Am I going to get excited by the small differences in games that I love like a woman on later consoles?

Are there adventure games as sweet or sweeter than those games to be discovered?

Going to go ahead and post some games that have my attention. Please give us some real insight into them. I trust you guys.

This is the game that got me to give the MSX a try even though the English translation is only 6/8 done and seems to have been that way for a long time.

Also 9,800 yen? Are you fucking kidding me? Or was the exchange rate just much lower back then.

I doubt there are many nips on this board.

But if it's any consolation it's easy to pirate and the consoles aren't very expensive to buy imported...

Well right now I'm sort of at the stage of trying it through emulation so I'm hoping to find out what will really WOW me enough to go all the way and grab one plus a flash cart (or maybe just a 5 1/4 USB floppy drive if that's all that's entirely necessary.

Our tiny yellow friends in the East should be waking up pretty soon right? What time to Japanese nerds get on The Internet?

But you're right I'll try to make it a little more interesting for everyone in the meantime by adding videos to go with the box art.

>At the time, most people seemed to agree it meant 'MicroSoft eXtended', referring to the built-in "Microsoft eXtended BASIC" (MSX-BASIC), specifically adapted by Microsoft for the MSX system. Another suggested source for the abbreviation was Matsushita-Sony. However, according to Kazuhiko Nishi, MSX could also stand for "Machines with Software eXchangeability". In 1985, Kazuhiko Nishi told that he named MSX after the MX missile.

I thought they were hardware emulators based on FPGAs, like the Minimig Amiga 500 compatible.

Also, I know the Z80 is still being manufactured, as are all of the PSG chips.
The MSX2-Video, the V9938, I'm not sure. From what I've found, its only application was in the MSX.
Unless there was a binary, and electrical compatible chip, like a TI one, that might be what would jack up
the price of a kit. Breadboards, ramchips, I/O controllers, etc. are cheap.

Oh hell yes, BASIC!

Time to write some vidya gaems.

Btw, I found that Atari BASIC and MSX-Extended BASIC have very similar syntax.
With the exception of switching graphics modes, most code is compatible.

I was able to port Hunt the Wumpus, and Space Invaders, pretty easily, with the latter needing slight tweaking, but the former ported with no modification at all, as its text only.

I can't say as I've ever actually come across laserdisc rips of these games even on UG. If you could find them, it probably wouldn't be hard to rip the video off them. It was literally just a pre-rendered video played in a loop from the laserdisc and a mini-game being played in the foreground on most of these games (the rest were Dragon's Lair type games)

No, thats BASIC code that launches MIDI commands for notes, velocity, tempo, pitch, transpose, etc. sent to the 3-voice PSG, unless you have an MSX Turbo R model, such as the Panasonic FS-A1GT, which has DIN ports for MIDI OUT to a GM module.

Hmm, getting errors on some of these pages claiming they contain an embedded file (unlikely since I converted them to jpg directly from the PDFs). Skipped a bunch of BASIC programming guides

Interesting thread, and thanks for posting all these scans. A lot of the MSX hardware I've seen looks really nice (pic related) but I've only tried one of the games on an emulator: Maze of Galious, which this walkthrough is for

Old Nintendo Power was co-produced by a Japanese publisher (Tokuma Shoten) and was built similarly to Japanese gaming mags at the time, especially with all of the visual noise.

Don't be laughable, the MSX was a thing in Europe. Not as big a thing as in Japan maybe, but still, a popular choice of home computer among several others.

Playing with it was simple, like a console basically, stick in a cartridge and just play. Nearly all the games that were worth playing came on carts, though they were ridiculously expensive (outside Japan at least) so not so many people had a lot of them.

The stuff that came on tapes was mostly direct ports from ZX spectrum games, because of shared CPU it was ridiculously easy to port that shit over, though that means most of those games weren't interesting if you've played them on Spectrum. It was the cartridge games, nearly all of which were developed in Japan, that actually pushed the MSX hardware.
