Giving its dynamic camera, there's a lot potential comfy spots in Lords of Shadow 2, though perhaps that will depend on your taste in settings. It's funny because Total Biscuit and many others called them out as early as Wrath, saying basically

Yeah, Blizzard in general feels like a company that made its greatest hits accidentally.
Or maybe it was 90s PC gaming in general.
Where they stumble onto a great game, but demonstrate their incompetence in the sequels.
That, or there's some uncredited geniuses behind those games, whose names we will never know.

But in WoW's case, I think it was just a case of the fundamental premise of the game being interesting on its own, and all it needed was decent enough gameplay to carry it, and enough players to let it shine.
I'm talking about the "being in a persistent open world with a bunch of people at the same time" aspect. Just playing on the same big world, on a dedicated, static server is what creates the "magic". The gameplay mechanics are just a way to facilitate those interactions.
In a way, it was a game that didn't need to be designed at all. It just needed not to be tampered with.
But they did tamper it, by making it more "gamey" by adding explicit progression ladders, reducing the "persistent world" aspect by adding more and more ways to teleport, or bypass the world, more instancing, and finally turning into a weird cross-server lobby system, ruining it forever.

Vanilla WoW felt like living as an NPC in somebody else's DnD campaign, and that's what was so magical about it. The more it tried being an actual game, the more it lost its charm.

This area will always stand out to me as simultaneously cozy and depressing as fuck. It gives you a glimpse into how advanced and powerful the civilization who actually built the Ancient City was. All that is left is a barely functioning golem and ruined tunnels overrun by forest creatures. I always felt bad for that Elf girl, who was probably trapped there since every path to or from that area is full of monsters.

Regardless of what else it was, Vanilla WoW was the best friend making simulator in the history of gaming. Hands down. You literally could not progress through the game without making a few buds, and often times, those few buds would grow into a guild.
Then from Wrath on, every single changed they made lowered the opportunities you'd have to collaborate with other players, which made the entire magic of the game evaporate.

To me it really is that simple. You can literally clear all the content up through heroic raids in modern wow without speaking another word to another player. Cross realm play means you'll almost never run into the same players again, so why bother getting to know anybody at all? Compare that to vanilla, where you couldn't even clear the Deadmines without teaming up with some people for the next few hours. And then, guess what? You're gonna run into those same people again, and again, and again. How could they not realize they were fucking that up?
