Ah, back from my refreshing 3-day vacation with assurances that my landlord is no longer serving FOUR ENTIRE APARTMENTS with one fucking router and a switch. Last time I get a place with internet included, let me tell you.
So, titlemap. I'm working on the camera, and I have no idea what one of these is better. Basically there are two options: Option A is this webm, where the camera twists and turns to look through each portal before shooting off. Option B is the next webm, where the camera goes straight through.

Single fire ZMs can cookoff. It's all about rate of fire, if you keep hammering the trigger, it will heat up. Letting a full auto ZM cool off for even a second or two after 10/15 rounds or 3/4 bursts will let you keep firing it for much longer without cookoffs. The reason burst cooks as well and stays heated for longer is because of the hyperburst firerate equalling that to the fuller auto firemode on the vulc.

i love pain engine's movement and physics, as retarded as they may be at times. much less stiff feeling than quake 2 engine, especially with the smoother animations. i'd also say it holds up tons better than other 2004-ish engines with how well it runs and how nicely it handles pretty models and textures.
i think it'd fit the feel daikatana was going for and make it play less shittily, especially with the wonky weapons.

I appreciate it for its other aspects, but do understand that those do Not and will never overcome the issues that it has. My semi-final thoughts on Ground Zero are that it makes a valiant effort to create engaging fights given how shit Q2's enemy behaviors are, 99% due to the enemy-generating Medics and Turrets, but it's fucking retarded how the turrets don't have an idle sound and can't be destroyed before they appear, and whoever made medics immune to the BFG when they crouch may bite the deepest reaches of my asshole.

Also Daedaluses are stupid useless grenade sponges that aren't even fun to kill with your surplus of grenades because of how they move + their shit ai + your GL's shit projectile orientation and arc.

Pretty close to an 8.7, the new additions are kinda fitting (minus parias) and there's some nice amount of replayability to it. Don't like the massive amount of inventory juggling. Some of the spells are just uninteresting copies of something ripped off from WoW (including the goddamn icons) or some other MMO, although combining some effects with certain weapons or items can be quite a treat, it feels somewhat boring in a way.
I'm rating it that and not a 9 because of Parias and because some character starts (mainly necro, assasin) are rather boring or lackluster.

It's actually close to a 8.0, maybe a bit lower.
Don't like some of the new monsters, it's like they saw Centaurs and said "Invuln frames are the next best thing besides sliced bread!" and made a Revenant version of it. You'd probably like it though, just don't play it on skill 4 (aka nightmare equiv) like I normally do because it's godawful.
Mage actually is amazing to play in this mod and the sole reason I'd ever try it. Too bad they fucked up the magic balance and made the lighting spell not only consume more green mana per attack, but also kill things slower than the two blue mana spells, specially in comparison to Ice shards which are absolutely sick in this mod.

>Other mods
Hexercise is actually amazing and it saddens me that nobody ever mentions it. Easily an 8.9 for me, but sadly just a solid 7 in reality because newer versions of gzdoom make it break certain scripts on a lot of maps making it virtually unplayable if you don't know how to fix it.

For comparison, a 10/10 would probably be playing with something like Demonsteele and having a monster mod that replaces Centaurs with something else or removes invuln from them.

Oh no, I agree, my issue is more so with the placement and amount of them. It's just jarring playing pwads and returning back to Doom 2 since it feels like most mappers understand that the PE is a dangerous and high priority enemy (especially on non-vanilla complevels). But in Doom 2 they're just treated like cacos and haphazardly placed around some levels. Pistol starting barrels o' fun is never a fun experience.

I finished my 3 map wad more or less so I'm moving on to try out udmf format and making a space themed map.
Stuff like making the sky render over walls to make structures appear to be floating and using self referencing sectors and teleports to cross gaps.
Need to make a custom sky texture that tiles properly first but it should be fun.

I just played up to Castle of Grief without incident. The only technical problems I've noted are that the HUD doesn't show your slot 4 pieces (which was always an issue, even when it was a new mod) and that crushers will softlock you without being able to kill you if you're playing as cleric and you have your extra life. Still a fantastic mod, I'm actually surprised how well it plays on the highest difficulty. I thought making all centaurs into slaughtaurs would be a problem with fastmonsters, but it works out perfectly because when the game throws centaurs at you, there's usually some ettins as well. It might've only been intended as visual variety, but with slaughtaur projectiles, it results in mass infighting and turns ettins into a valuable combat resource. It's the sort of brilliant design that can only happen by accident.

Is my copy broken then? I have issues in Guardian of Ice with the trap room before the visit to the death wendigo room teleport in Guardian of Steel as an ice pillar that is supposed to lower after killing two centaurs does not lower and certain other scripts regarding some puzzles in Shadow Wood do not trigger properly or don't raise/lower certain walls the whole way.

And yeah, despite my issues, the mod is probably the only one that is a cut above the rest in the slew of Hexen mods. Fast, crunchy and fun melee, satisfying ranged support weapons for all classes, good sounds, projectile parrying, etc.
The difficulty isn't actually lowered that much despite being called by the author as an OP weapons mod because of the centaur changes and as you said, playing on skill 4 makes it fast paced and frenetic in some areas.

It might just be a flaw of the original scripting that's more noticeable because of the faster combat. I just had an issue with the second Heresiarch fight in Gibbet where it wouldn't open up the rest of the fight after killing the four chaos serpents. Apparently that script just breaks if you kill more than one serpent at a time. I had to not use firestorm even though it was the obvious best choice for four tightly-packed serpents.

Nobody would have played this game, if it wasn't part of Doom franchise. Carmack basically fucked up by making too heavy engine, and they had gimp the gameplay to make fps game out of it. Quake 2 had more complex AI and all previous id titles already more satisfying counterparts for weapons. Doom 3 fails as a horror game, first person shooter and as a Doom game. If I had something good to say about it, at least it cares about it's own lore and atmosphere. Developers created the game with love for Doom, but Carmack basically ruined it because of his ego and desire to make an engine that wasn't suited for gaming back then.

(I do howerer like Doom 3 more than the Dooms that came after it. I occasionally do play it, but it's far from masterpiece.)

I had a horrible idea to make certain enemies who stop shooting when you break LOS have a wait time where they'll pop you the instant you peek out of cover, but I thought better of it once I tried it and realized how fucking awful it was to play with.
In other news, I have "fixed" a "balance issue" with Cacodemons and Barons where the spread attacks they do tend to have way too much width over time. Through the power of ZScript, you will now actually be able to strafe these attacks at range in semi-wide hallways, and you will get absolutely fucked by them in narrow hallways (haven't worked out how to avoid that yet). Still tweaking the exact width they get to, but initial estimates look playable. This also has the side effect of slightly reducing the melee power of these combo attacks due to how it changes their underlying implementation, which is good because they were too strong in the Cacodemon's case.

I was debating doubling the caco's xscale for this to make a joke.
I'm thinking though, that maybe having the projectiles spread wider faster is a good way to have them not utterly skullfuck the player in hallways, since there are maps where you need to hug walls to bait projectiles into them. Not as relevant with the caco, but with the Baron it's a consideration.

Not really, the vanilla monsters kind of emulate this with a chance to stop firing, and if you're super unlucky it certainly looks like this is happening. What I did though, was make a state where a monster could stop and anticipate dishing out an attack (the mancubus specifically), waiting until it could see you before doing so. Doubly fucked by the fact that it worked with chain attacks for them, so if you dodged one's blasts the follow-up mancubi would just hold and wait to see you, then blast you. I mean don't get me wrong, it was a neat behavior, but just like the (horribly processor incinerating due to my own retardation) cover-taking logic I experimented with in the early ZS versions, it would probably have made gameplay unfun.

I just looked at Selaco's ZS. That was a mistake. Ouch my eyes.
I was hoping there'd be something cool in here in terms of the AI, but it really does just looks like they're using fairly standard "wander when you can't see, aim, shoot, and strafe when you can" logic with a bunch of audio on top to make it seem like more than it is. Not to say that the enemy logic is bad in execution, it's actually quite detailed compared to the more basic stuff in Doom with a lot of extra sprites and stuff, it's just not that "smart" really. I don't even see cover-taking logic in here, which is something you could do fairly easily with custom maps and invisible objects.

There's a pretty good video out there of HL2 having that issue. Where the combine grunts actually have pretty great combat AI, where they'll flank, retreat, and move differently depending on eachothers positions.

Really the main issue is that there are 3 definitions of "good" AI, and they don't always overlap, but they're all necessary components of an AI.

>AI that makes the "correct" decision in a scenario

Type 1 is super easy to make, and also not fun at all. An instakill turret with perfect hitscan accuracy is a perfect example of Type 1 taken to the extreme. Less extreme but more realistic versions of this might include stuff like the jackal snipers on Halo 2 Legendary (though you could be forgiven for thinking they're not any different).
Type 2 is "smart" AI, but can usually be gamed in some way and ends up boring in the long run. For example, an AI that will always take cover if being shot at can be forced to take cover by a smart player, making it predictable. FEAR AI is more type 2 than any other type, made a bit better by the fact that by its very nature it can't function at perfect efficiency, so it makes "wrong" decisions that are less predictable.
Type 3 AI is the rarest and hardly ever designed for in FPS. This is a hypothetical AI that is made to push you to the brink, but still let you win and make you satisfied. I see the Marauders in Eternal as an attempt at this. The AI director in L4D is sort of Type 3 as well, which leads into the next point.
AI shouldn't be thought of as just a single enemy, it's the whole set of active enemies at once. Doom's AI is actually pretty good, even though it's also dumb as bricks, because as a whole it provides a very good experience (level design notwithstanding). An imp might be stupid and weak, but a group of imps and cacodemons and a few revenants in the right area is a very fun experience, where you'll have to keep track of many firing lines, weave in and out of projectiles, prioritize targets, and have a lot of freedom in what approaches you take to beat it.

Not familiar with it. Probably can't even launch it on my potato laptop. To continue with being serious, in both cases it's essentially about the overall vibe I get from the game. When it comes to F.E.A.R, I think it's mostly that specific horror aspect of it doesn't click with me. Don't really care about the genre usually with Blood and another retro FPS being an exception to that rule.
As for the Selaco... It seems secondary and "off-topic" in context of it being a part of the whole retro FPS niche. Unlike a bunch of shovelware you can stumble upon nowadays, I can't perceive it as being in the same group with Ion Fury, REKKR: Sunken Land and other aforementioned titles. Another major point would probably be the protagonist that, aside from being not-Shelly (I remember reading here that "female brunette protagonist" are overused in these FPS), is pushed into the "masses" as 'waifu icon'. You can make a point that whenever specific person think if she's cute or not is subjective opinion, but it just feels like that's all the character has to offer. Which, again, just doesn't make me care about the game as a whole. But most TL;DR here will be "I'm looking for retro FPS and this isn't one, so I skip it".

i think what matters about an enemy is the overall "role" or at least ability
like what one does that the other doesn't or at least a particular gimmick that makes them memorable
it's why the arch-vile, revenant and pain elementals are memorable because of how unique they are
then there's examples like heretic's iron lich which have the tornado attack
but you can also have wasted potential examples like the gun stealing gremlins from quake
it says something about enemy mods in doom where some additions will feel unique or special, then you have the recolored cacodemons that shoot 4 fireballs at once or basic variations like that

I didn't care for eternals story either. 2016 is better in most ways. There are things I like about eternals gameplay, but it railroads you too often into a single strategy. A mix between the two, gameplay wise, would've been best. The story could've been completely rewritten and I don't think I would've missed much of the plot we got.
I did like the scientist slowly coming around to worshipping doomguy, even though it's retarded. It played well into the power fantasy for me. And I liked the depiction of hell. And the stupid automated messages promoting the demononic invasion in stupid peudosocial advertising fashion.
2016s codex entries were fanfic tier, but at least the plot wasn't tainted by them. It stayed pretty decent.
Overall I like eternal, but it didn't capture 2016s charm in many ways.

Is there a proper sniper rifle mod for hideous destructor yet? With all the disadvantages of carrying one such as above average weapon weight even when unloaded, rare unobtanium snowflake overkill caliber, long barrel that makes it legitimately difficult to wield in close quarters and all that stuff. Minus the whole jamming thing that the Boss has that is. I do know about the custom chamber but it's still messy from level to level to have to clean it afterwards.

The response isn't always best for the actor, but appropriate for the role. The spectacle I feel is the most overlooked and underappreciated of AI's jobs.
