I'm glad I started collecting games earlier, because I just sold most of my collection off to braindead zoomers and bought a set of flashcarts.
Hope you enjoy Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance for $240 bucks, my friend! It paid for a Wii (now hacked) and external drive with plenty left over.

I'm really glad I collected heavy in the 2010's when the tards on here were all saying the bubble was going to pop literally any day now

Most games aren't that expensive, consider starting your collection with some obscure third party games or popular first parties instead of just going on ebay, typing gamecube, sorting by most expensive and crying because you don't want to pay 400$ for a pokemon bonus disc.

The best times were 2000-2005.
Got a whole lot of SNES, Saturn, N64, Sega CD all CIB for really cheap.

Also depending on the game, you can still buy physical compilations on modern consoles. Tbh I haven't used any of my original hardware in years, just emulation since like... Mid-2010's

Mini consoles are another nice option, they come with like twenty to forty games each and you can easily mod them to add more.

I regret not buying certain games 10-15 years ago, games that I actually wanted to play but felt they were too expensive back then, and have only gotten worse since then. I reccomend buying 1 game a month. CiB as it holds value better to collectors. Find a system that speaks to your for me it's Saturn and N64. 1 game a month is easily achievable. If you can, get 1 game per paycheck. This is such a cheap hobby compared to scuba diving.

Even purchases made in the last year are already insanely flippable. I managed to snag DoDonPachi for both the Saturn and PSX for $150 together and then turned around and sold the Saturn one alone for $120 like a month later. This. In 50 years all of the original cartridges will degrade or tarnish away to nothing and only the rom horders will be the only ones actually preserving these games for the future. It is simply more practical to transfer roms to a new storage device when the old one wears out than it is to keep a bunch of N64 or Game Boy carts and their button batteries operational. Its simple logistics.

I admire the passion of collectors of original hardware, but its a losing battle. Join rom gang.

Wait a year and see if the covid bubble bursts, and after that if you have the money get the games you want. Obviously you won't be able to get a complete collection like people used to but if there's a game you really really want just go for it. You can always sell it later.

Still nice to get xbox 360 games, you can install them on an xbox 360 console and then just put them on a usb in your computer and run them on an emulator.

I've been watching a copy of Pocky and Rocky 2 for a very good price for the better part of a year, but it's a big commitment that I'm just never in the position to pull the trigger.

If you can find a copy of Wild Guns for a decent price, pull the trigger. It's one of the best games I've ever played, period. It's number one on the system for me, and probably top 10 games.

I was lucky that I started to collect early and I am glad I actually sold them. Made enough money from that shit to buy a car straight up and a few flashcards. Off course you cannot get the JP versions of RPG's and games that heavily rely on the story. But getting JP versions of Platformers, Fighting Games, Racing games etc that don't require text to understand has saved me a ton.

Especially on the Saturn where the Japanese version costs 30 euros, European 100 euros and American 800 euros.

N64 controller sticks are not analogue. They are digital. The moment you turn the N64 on, the controller uses a camera to take a picture of the position of the stick and uses that as the default starting position. It could be the most floppy, flaccid, wobbly N64 ever, it will still function identically to a rigid one, so long as you position it properly before the N64 turns on.

I finally got my favorite SNES game Chrono Trigger loose copy in very good condition for $200.00. I lost my old SNES Chrono Trigger back in 1999 so i finally have the SNES Chrono Trigger to go my old very mint condition Chrono Trigger box with poster and manual. I also got a one of the video game box protected acrylic hard case that look like the WATA case for my SNES Chrono Trigger copy for my retro video game collection so it not be damage or lost again. I wish i had buy a new sealed copy of SNES Chrono Trigger back in 1999 at the store when they was still selling the SNES game for $70.00. I am just happy finally got my old Chrono Trigger game back in my hand. If you love the game and want play the game in it original form on the original console go buy the game before it too late when it still cheap to buy. If i had time machine i would buy 10 sealed copy of SNES Chrono Trigger in March 11, 1995 at Toy ' R US and used one just play on my SNES and save other new sealed copy as back up so i will never feel left out not getting i wanted after all years of my life growing up.

They even accept this kind of stuff for speedruns, so that's how you know it's accurate.
