I feel its hard to find new continuous episodes and campaigns for quake - everyone has moved on to ad and violent rumble like giant maps not linked to others and campaigns are usually very old levels. I like Tronyn campaigns like arwop, soe and arcanum but even though they are linked and played as a campaign the levels are still fucking huge. Actually, I'm sick of RCTW in general now.
Going in, I knew it was a precursor to the dark ages of FPS game design, but thought since it was built on Idtech and lumped in the "Retro FPS" category, there'd at least be smooth, clean-cut moving and shooting, and satisfying feedback when you hit stuff. Instead I was met with such joys as
>Soldiers that do not react to pain and keep shooting you with 75% efficiency despite having 12 bullets pumped into their torso and face.
>Guns that spread more than your mother.
>The inability to switch weapons during reloads and overheats.
>Overheating being a mechanic at all.
>Taking away my rifle crosshair to give me a scope that I can't even use while moving unless I disable autorun or crouch- Why the fuck doesn't it just lower your movespeed to walking tier and not cancel itself? Why? Fucking unusable without a toggle crouch script, but also completely necessary to win.
>Rockets that sometimes shoot 5 feet above where you're aiming.

I think the reason why the Doom community even has any sort of drama or ego trips is because of the kind of series it's based off.
There's a few things associated with Doom that were either made by fans or just the public, that either affected the series officially or just the image in the pop culture zeitgeist or whatever you call it.
Like nicknames such as Doomguy, Pinky, they way how some source ports, mods or settings affected perceptions of the game, certain sites, fanmade ports of almost lost games, reverse engineering, the ports in non-gaming devices, a mobile port by Carmack that even used a fork of PrBoom, even shit like memes and reaction images, Hissy, the second Doom wiki and much more.
You could say it's why newer Doom fans are more performative of their Doom fanboyism despite being less "meaningfull" because of the culture of internet "influencers" and modern nerd culture they grew up around.
But how modern fans are can also be traced to Slayers Club marketing.

The stalker suit seems a bit out of place and the torch looks more like a prop from some mapset rather than a powerup.

Therefore, we have a UAC stack (unobtanium, aspirin, caffeine) on the left. /fit/bros will know, everyone else will probably scratch their head.

I think the problem people have lies in the inconsistency of damage that a perfectly aligned shot will give you at even medium-close range. It would've been preferable to me to tighten up the spread a skosh, and weaken the pellets so that if they all hit it would just barely kill an imp.

Despite being supposedly LE CRAZY MINDFUCK BATSHIT SURREAL EXPERIENCE, this map is extremely straightforward - unlike many supposedly straight forward maps I've played where you end up going in circles for 1000000 fucking times.
So you can enjoy the experience without any retardedly difficult fights or bullshit puzzles.

Final set piece is an amazing find and I only WISH there were MORE FUCKING ROCKETS since I had to fist the final boss which forced me to save/load after every couple punches - totally killing the atmosphere it so ingeniously created.

8.75/10 - very fucking good, almost great.

This is very misleading. You could do this in MS-DOS Quake 1.01 already. You can fill the screen with text anytime you like, and you can use numbers for the options (which read like weapon switches). What are the Hexen hubs recommendations? I've played Cyrgoth 1 (finished), and it was good, but too grindy even on easy. Played A New World, and stopped after some time, something is uncomfortable about too many small rooms there. Playing Lost Luxury now, and it is perfect so far. Just opened the last door to caves in the hub. All 3 areas before it were well done and really different, and mostly large open spaces. I use WoC or Brutal Hexen with them, but mostly to spicy the things up, without paying much attention to RPG system part.

The ammo efficiency was raised, every shot does between 12 and 48 damage. Technically, The BFG is still more efficient in terms of pure damage if you use a single BFG shot then finish it with plasma, but that's just a quirk of how the BFG works. Babel's BFG does exactly 2400 damage in increments of 60 damage. That means it doesn't average of 40 damage per cell used. The plasma rifle, or the pulse rifle, does about 32. The difference is that the BFG always uses 60 cells, whereas the pulse rifle can use any number.
Basically, in order to use the BFG to its full effectiveness it should be used on as many enemies as possible, and as strong of enemies as possible. If you aren't using every bit of damage that The BFG can do in a single shot, its ammo efficiency drops tremendously.

I'm on the fence with these voxels. Static stuff looks fine, but the enemies are hit or miss. They somehow look both squashed and much larger than their sprite forms. The death frames are a bit lumpy and uncanny, but that's more because I've never really thought about what they'd look like in 3D. Specifically the pinky.
There was a pack made for Blood by the same guy, and the enemies there looked a lot more natural. Maybe because it's a software-rendered engine with actual voxels that were already in the game, and mob movement is a lot smoother. Might get better results with different lighting or lower resolutions.

From what I've played so far:

Not sure you'll like it, because this one has a much bigger focus on difficulty rather than exploration. All hubs are basically a portal selection map and the connnected maps are somewhat short but challenging. At times it almost feels like some kind of a survival horror game due to how scarce resources can be.

Wizards & Warriors 3, so you'll switch between the Wizard, Knight, and Thief on the fly. With a focus on melee combat with the knight, with some of the weapons having durability (It recharges over time, even if you break them), the mage will have nukes and some utility stuff, and the thief will have guns, ammo stealing, and a deployable turret. I'm admittedly gonna be doing some asspulls because there sure as hell aren't any guns in W&W3, but the thief's weapons there sucked.

It's gonna be really fun to have a three in one like that.

Because of all Q2 hype, I started playing Q2 after not touching it for 6 years. This time with Hard instead of Medium. I'm surprised how fun this is. Never knew that difficulty influences directly the enemy AI. In medium you had time to kill or at least stun everyone before they had change to attack, at Hard you actually get to fight them. This is gonna be a fun ride. Now I actually want complete Q2 and all 5 expansions (or maybe not Juggernaut).

Thanks fo the pointers! Seen 4 weeks of pain before and skipped it. Penumbra looks great, never tried it. Viscerus seems to be a classic one, have it already but never played. Orig Hexen is close to ideal for me, but sometimes too much narrow labirynths.
Do you use any gameplay mods? I recently started to appreciate Brutal Hexen more. Always play as a melee fighter, and punching stuff with WoC was really fun, but eventually got tired of it. With Brutal Hexen don't really care about gibs and dynamic lights, but aggressive monsters behaviour is very welcome. And the axe as a melee plays different to WoC punching. Especially liked fighter crossbow, that is powerful, but always low on ammo and must be used sparingly. Haven't tried Walpurgis yet.

To keep it on topic, I used to have a prototype for a cyberpunk vs biopunk sort of mod where monsters would drop augmentations of either flavor and the further along either branch you got, you got upsides and downsides to it.

The biopunk end would ultimately turn your guns into stuff like the bone gun out of Existenz and a sort of living creature for a plasma rifle.

Had a few laps in both vanilla (prboom+) and with HD. You like barrels a lot! Quite good enemy placement all around and decent architecture. The trio of maps was really fun to play through.

For Map01, the starting Imp section can be trivialized because the blue keycard can be picked up without triggering the trap linedef with some slight nudging, it's a bit too far foward, just move it a bit more back into the sector and it'll be fine.
Map02, asides from the stairs, I think the Imp teleports at the section before the HK is kinda weird, caught me off-guard the first time. The chaingun secret in the armor room was too easy to find, I'd recommend to switch it around to the other side or use a different texture?
I think the number of barrels on Map03 is fine. Don't worry too much about it.

No idea what the problem in question was, as I don't have time to play maps right now, maybe it has something to do with GZD compat options.
In general I test my maps with the "highest" sourceport for the respective map format and recommend that.

It’s the same but slower, with more cramped and smaller areas, spongier enemies, and with squadmates that block your movement and cause a game over when killed.
Imagine making it to the end of 2’s first level, being told to go all the way back to the start of the level, then being told to go back to the end all with enemies respawning. That’s 4’s first level. I have saved you time and/or money.

Feeling somewhat lazy now to give in-depth review, but visuals were the most stand-out part — varied and classy, well brought potential of stock textures. Couldn't finish 2nd with 3rd maps, otherwise they're fully explored. One thing i gotta point out is deep water effect when it got into the way of gameplay by preventing monsters stepping into the area, not sure how to mitigate that as I'm unfamiliar with this mapping trick.

The deep water effect is using self referencing sectors
I do like the effect though for some reason I was having a lot of trouble getting it to work correctly after a bit.
Self referencing sectors are just regular sectors in regards to the physics of a level,
if a monster can't enter one its likely I set a linedef to disallow monsters probably because sprites render on top of the sector which looks jank as fuck sometimes.
Also it looks wildly different depending on the video mode in gzdoom so it's difficult to measure how it looks for people.
Glad someone thinks I could help with a future mapping project, the maps other anons post seem way better than mine.

I assume he used self-referencing sectors.
Monsters can generally traverse heights up to 24 units in difference. He could either make the water shallower or try to make steps into the pools (that however would most likely fuck with the self-referencing sector).
