Certain games cannot function with analog controls or with analog controllers plugged in. This button disables the analog controls and makes the controller appear as a digital only pad to the PlayStation. Similarly check out the mode button on 6-button Genesis controllers. It’s not designed to be a functional gameplay button rather a utility button to make sure switching controller standards halfway through a console generation doesn’t mess anything up for already existing games or developers who don’t want to adopt it.

>> No.9185971

It's like the mode button on the six button Genesis pad. It disables the new features in order to guarantee compatibility with older games that may not work right otherwise. It allows the dualshock to behave like an original PS1 pad.

I like the analog button just because I like having a little light on my controller as I'm playing it.

That said though it really is useless. At least with the Dual Analog you can actually force it to switch between digital/analog/flight stick modes if you want, Dual Shocks always just detect what mode it's supposed to be in automatically for all but the absolute earliest of PS1 games.

Analog stick buttons are way worse. Literally ANYWHERE else on the controller would be a better place to put a pair of buttons than under the fucking analog sticks. 6 face buttons, a third row of shoulder buttons, literally anything. OP posted a Dual Analog controller though. When the light is green it operates in Analog Joystick (SCPH-1110) mode, which is good for an alright amount of games. It also changes to red to operate like a Dual Shock without the shock (outside of Japan anyway). And of course a third mode which is off, like a Dual Shock also has.

The handles are also longer.

Very early PS1 games designed with only the digital controller in mind might fail to recognize the controller if it's in analog mode, so the analog button is there to switch between the two modes. The VAST majority of PS1 games can just detect the controller automatically though.

People rarely mention it, but Ridge Racer V has analog controls. Analog is off by default and the game even shows a PS1 controller in the menu. It changes to a DS2 if you turn analog on and lets you set up turning and throttle/brake separately, even with a sensitivity setting for the buttons.

The MODE button functions as an 8th regular button during gameplay but I only vaguely remember a single game ever using it. It only fulfils its "MODE" functionality immediately on startup.
The PS1 is curiously similar. The Analog button is actually just a regular button, it's not handled directly in hardware. I assume it was so that games could enable and disable analog themselves and so the button has to be polled for like any other button so the game knows to do the switch. If you wanted you could program the system to do whatever and the controller won't turn itself into a digital pad unless the code tells it to.

That’s a fire alarm. Funny story, I used to teach English in Japan, and a school had one of those. If they have an extinguisher compartment they normally say 消火器 so you know to open it and grab it in case of a small fire. The kanji means extinguish fire utensil. Someone picked off the two top parts of the second character so it said 消人器 which would mean something along the lines of human extinguisher utensil. I laughed all the time when I saw it. Thanks for listening.
