But the reality is i never even knew about TurboGrafx as a kid. The first time i learned about it, was when i learned about castlevania Rondo of blood. Jessi like i didn't know about the msx until i learned metal gear solid had 2d prequels.
And I wasn't a casual not even then, i was balls deep in sega Nintendo and soon Playstation. All of my friends were gamers too. None of them knew about tg16 until long after it was dead. Same goes for msx, pc98, etc...

I always thought Bonk was the same character as Zonk. I just assumed they changed the name for whatever reason simply to be all cool and radical about it since for the time that was the mentality behind a lot of games. I figured since it was also a genre shift this is why they did it.

Bonk was actually very well received when the first game landed on a system starved for games. Critics were kind to it and the game had lineups to play it on in store demos. The problem is no one actually wanted a TG16. Bonk was the least of their problems.
