Previous Handhelds thread: >>9146782

So i ordered a Retroid Pocket 3 in the Retro design (pic) and 3GB Ram for 171€ to Germany. It's my second handheld, had a LDK before.
Hope it's a good upgrade.
I also ordered two 8bitdo Pro 2 Wired controller in the same design and a USB-C hub. Hope to play two player games with it.

Right, it doesn't look like much of an upgrade in terms of CPU/GPU from RP2+ to 3. There are rumors that Android got a speed improvement of up to 30% because it went from 9 to 11.
I doubt that very much.

Pic is my old LDK which i sold recently.

It's because Steam and Valve are a cult just like Apple is. Dumbing down software and technology for the lowest common denominator while selling branded hardware at a premium. The only real difference is that when it comes to Apple products you still end up with a bit more to your name than you do with the game rental service that Steam has created. Now watch as I get replies from people who will claim that Valve has done no wrong in monopolizing the market, and that it's all for the best that physical games and installation media are gone because they are a clutter that take too much work to use.

Android is a shit OS for gaming
Clips where you use an external controller are unwieldy and have input lag
Controller attachments are extremely hit and miss and often do shit like cover ports so you can't play while charging or using wired earbuds.
Modern phones are all ultra wide displays leaving you with huge black spaces while playing older games that don't have widescreen hacks
Unless you have quite literally nothing going on, a phone is a method of communication. People use them for texting, emailing and calling.

You can build a library in Launchbox instead and copy that over if you'd rather not use the built-in scraping though.

if you have a phone with a snapdragon 888 or newer, then you really shouldn't. but if your phone is older, and small, and you just want a separate dedicated device that does just games, then it's nice to have options.

The oldest controller I have that still works is the old Logitech Wingman Rumblepad bought somewhere in early 2001, that has seen more use to this day than some zoomers posting here are alive, and even that has no serious damage to the stick necks. I have never seen any controller with analog sticks get damaged to the point it's not usable any more in the last 30 years, even after 10000+ hours of use and being thrown around by kids. Putting tape on your sticks to protect them is the equivalent of putting tinfoil hats on your head.

There is no legitimate reason. Any way to fuck around with JELOS to add options present in AmberELEC or should I switch back? The only advantage I see so far from JELOS is that it takes maybe 3 to 4 seconds less to boot into the main menu. The rest seems like AmberELEC with less features. I'm here trying to disable all sorts of animations and I can't disable the carousel type of animation on the default theme (which is the theme I like anyways). AmberELEC had that setting somewhere. I'm not sure if it's an EmuELEC feature that's easy to add or it's baked in so hard I would have to build it again.

The Win600. The RG353P is pretty good, but people were looking forward to an x86 handheld to compete against the other ones that are coming out. It pisses me off that I bought the RG351P just a few months ago instead of waiting for the 353 as I'm having a bit of a problem with ergonomics and at least the 353 looks a bit comfier to hold. They keep half-assing their products, the 552 was a "decent" device who puzzled a lot of people since it was their follow up to the 351 line, and while the screen was good nobody was looking for a $250 device that can't even do PS2.
The Win600 is a complete joke of a device and the 353 is ok but there isn't much reason to get it over a Retroid Pocket 2+.
They just put out a teaser for their next device and they're still using the same mediocre analog sticks.

The d-pad might be a bit sensitive on diagonals, where it definitely wasn't on the RG351MP.
There seem to be persistent issues with sleep mode and brightness levels resetting on each cold boot, I don't think JELOS firmware updates have actually fixed the issue yet despite their claims.

Otherwise, yes it's really great, most comfy handheld in a long while, and actually has just enough power that it can actually do full speed SA-1 SNES games.

But I'm jealous of the 351 community. I feel the RG353P won't have as much community support as the 351. Like there's only one community OS for it compared to AmberELEC/351ELEC(a whole OS named after a device. Nice), ArkOS, JELOS too, Batocera, 351Droid(nice), etc.

I might wait another generation before I actually buy one of these types of things since in another year it feels like smooth GC emulation might be pretty viable. The Odin Lite is less expensive than the Pro and offers better battery life as well. If you go down in price, nothing can touch the Odin Lite in terms of emulation, 6' screen size and build quality.

These Windows/laptop like handhelds like the Steam Deck, OnePlayerX, Ayaneo, etc come at the cost of not just much bigger price tags, but higher weight and size, thus not making them really portable. If I’m playing retro games most of the time, I don’t need to carry that cumbersome alternative. And honestly, none of them play newer games at high quality anyway, plus if you try the battery sucks and they get real loud with the fans.

Any AAA games I’d want to play on a handheld I’d probably just use Moonlight to stream and let my PC do the heavy lifting. This way the handheld can be much lighter, get longer battery time, and with the Odin’s higher screen image/resolution quality than a Steam Deck, it’ll look better too.

There is no better alternative than the Odin Lite in terms of price-performance ratio and value.

General emulationstation settings are in the main menu. Emulator settings need to be configured in Retroarch.
Better Saturn, Dreamcast and PSP emulation compared to amberELEC.
The dev considers it "feature complete", and will only update the emulators when new versions come out (might change because he is considering adding some new stuff).
My preferred OS.

The non-retro library of phones is severely lacking, whereas with jailbroken OEMs you have theirs on top of emulation. Yeah, 640x480 actually works really well for most content.
It either cleanly integer scales to totally or nearly depending on what you're playing.
Or you can use a Retroarch shader like sharp-bilinear-2x-prescale or a filter like Normal2X, and it will retain the look of even pixels and fill the screen without looking like a typical blurry bilinear upscale.

Honestly perfect as far as I'm concerned, I've turned on bl filtering and put on normal 2x filter and shit looks 10/10. The shader is the LCD grid and GBA colour one which I personally think makes some games look really good but others I turn it off.

As for input lag I don't notice any. I've played ball buster NES games on this thing just fine (my personal lack of skill aside)

>> No.9186309 [DELETED]

>>9186271
NTA but on the 351MP it's a little smaller and on the 351P it's literally 2x the GBA resolution, so it's perfect there. Also if there's input lag there I can barely notice it myself, and I do notice it on an android phone with a gamepad plugged in through USB-C. I'm guessing they just got the polling rate right on these. It gets better if you disable threaded video on RetroArch, which on these works for most platforms without slowing anything down (I guess maybe some PS1 game I haven't tried that could push the PS1 hardware?) so definitely I would recommend disabling that.

Also don't underestimate these for DS emulation. It works surprisingly well as long as you're alright with bilinear filtering (disable high resolution mode). I have played quite a few button friendly DS games on my RG351P and they work nicely. On some you can even enable high resolution with no frameskipping. Same with the PSP, some less demanding games work flawlessly, some with very minor frameskips every now and then.

Chinkhelds are a scam

https://youtu.be/waO5YgRI60A

>> No.9187670

>>9187586
Chinkhelds are still the best way to play these things comfortably. Less weight, less input lag and for the most part you just turn it on, pick a game and play it, done. Sony/Nintendo handhelds are not as good at emulation and smartphones are annoying to use with a controller on a clip (even wired, specially wired) or a telescopic controller (with only 2 semi good ones in the market).

The chink handheld scams are those by companies like Anbernic who are all hiking up prices due to popularity and releasing 20 different models lacking in features with the same shitty buttons. Also this chink in the video probably used a quick charger with an USB-C to USB-C cable, which is the standard Samsung charger they include with many of their tablets and phones and doesn't work with these. He could take it apart, unplug the battery, plug it back and it's likely it would work with a different charger.

Shoulder buttons are a little stiff if you press from the top but you don't really press from there holding it anyway.
Just wish it had a little more power so it could hit DC/PSP and maybe do better Saturn/N64. But if you just want up to PS1 is a comfy device

I know the RP2+ is similar hardware to RP3 so with them making the form factor of the 3 more compatible for something like PSP would it be able to emulate N64/PSP, etc like that?

I have a RGBMax10 2 already. Good comfy shape but current market seems to be goodshape/screen but too lower power to use it all, power but design that makes it less useful (RP2+), or large/expensive not so portable AYN/RG552/etc. Sort of hoping RP3 bridges that gap of the up to PSP/NDS level with a screen that can do it.

All those companies you listed started off on a great footing with great feedback from the first products that got people excited. Then they just start releasing a new product what seems like every 3 months that some how ends up being worse than the last one.
Same thing has happened to the Chinese phone market where companies like Xiaomi and BBK literally rehash a prior phone literally every month

I know I'm lucky to have gotten one at retail and be receiving it right when there's roms and that it's not great to begin with, but this still sucks.

Thinking about going for that 503.
Flawed, sure, but a nice screen, internal wifi and enough power for shaders.

After watching this video I'm so glad I held off pre-ordering. Guess I'm going to have to look elsewhere. Shame as my RP2 was quite decent.

Placed an order for an ambernic rg351 a week ago from the company and haven’t gotten a single update on it yet. Thinking of canceling it. Is the retroid pocket any good? Are there any companies that make retro handhealds where I don’t have to deal with the a sketchy Chinese company to get it? The last thing I need is them forgetting to give me my damned tracking number and it gets swiped off my porch and I have no recourse because hurrrr made in China. Even if it means I have to pay more Id rather avoid dealing with companies like this

I installed JELOS on my RG351V coming from 351ELEC because AmberElec looks like bloatware - I'm pretty happy with it, the only think that fucks me up is that it appears like you cannot center the gamelist anymore like in 351ELEC and the text for the game titles will *always* be cut off. So if you have multiple games with the same title (as you often do in a romset) the only way to find out which version of the game you're selecting is to fucking wait for the text to scroll which takes ages. I cannot find a setting to change this.

On 351ELEC you were able to have a centered gamelist which provided more space and I'm pretty sure it even wrapped the text so there was never any doubt as to what version you're looking at.

I really can't reccomend retroid unless you want a ps1 machine. And if thats the case, you are so much better off with a used vita

The Linux distributions for these handhelds really just serve as a method to launch RetroArch. There should be no additional overheard impacting performance. While I like minimalist software on principle too, no reason to gimp your experience in this case IMO

351 handhelds are pretty good at PS1, I thought the reason to get an RP2+ was having more power for N64/Saturn/Dreamcast.

Lmao. They want 595 to 745 EUR for this shit and your unit probably won't ship until 2030. What retard would buy this over any chinkheld? Most of them run Linux just like this thing. Have way better hardware. Plus some of them run Android which will have way more ARM ports available. This shit makes no sense. You can't even say build quality because the Pandora had dogshit build quality. They literally sent reviewers units with busted shoulder buttons.

Actually it's on the top. The home button and volume rocker is on the side. If you're going to seethe at least do it right.
