Literally play more. Set random map with 8 factions, L-size, no subterrain (unless you plan to main Dungeon) and the rook difficulty (the "tower" from chess) and then just play.

Play the tutorial, so you know basic mechanics, but that's about it.
The actual trick is to learn all the units and to be able to recognise them on map. And by "learn" I don't mean to memorise their stats, but just roughly remember their tiers, if they are strong/fast/flying etc and if they have some special ability. For which just playing random maps is perfect. Along with getting familiar with your own units, skills in action, how stats operate, what items exist etc. The alternative would be to just try to memeorise a wikia, and that's never fun, when you can organically learn via playing.
If you are struggling against AI (no shame in that as a newfag), then make your random maps XL and with subterrain then, leaving you with more breathing space.
Speaking of which, because I forgot about it: when generating maps, make sure to flag "No water". Otherwise you will end up with utterly pointless water or even archipelago-like map. Not fun at all, and super-tedious.
The most noob-friendly factions are Castle and Rampart, and if you are playing with SoD (and you should), then Conflux, and by a long shot.

H3 multiplayer is so fucking weird. Basically, you just compete on how good you can abuse the AI and plan your actions. Then there is a final battle between two players that lasts a few minutes.

Just HoMM3, with all expansions. In vanilla state.
If playing a hot-seat, then ERA, for few rule tweaks to streamline the MP aspect.
HotA is for literal homosexuals, since it fucks over more than it "fixes" and enforced retarded turney mentality on people that don't even play turneys in the first place. If I wanted to play a shitty mod, I would just got WoG and turned all of its tweaks on. At least those would be fun, compared with how dry HotA is.

It is significantly more stable.
That doesn't mean it doesn't crash, but I've got maybe ten crashes this year so far (I'm playing a hot-seat bi-weekly with friends), while WoG crashed on me just during last play six times. If you are solely for gameplay tweaks, then it is superior.
The only issue I've got with ERA is that it still didn't teach the AI how to use terrain bypass (and I doubt it can be actually done), so that option is only viable when playing an all-human game.
