It had a good opening year. But they were spending incredible amounts on marketing. It wasn't sustainable after competition arrived. Where I live, it was like 50% obscure. My uncle got me a Dreamcast for my 12th birthday and I never even heard of it before that day. I showed it to neighbor kids and they were wowed, one guy then told everybody I have a Sega Saturn lol.

You could ask a store seller if they have any Dreamcast games and they looked at you like you asked for some alien shit or something.

I'm an American born 1994 who grew up in poverty and only knew a friend of my older brother's who had one. I played a couple games, including Nights, but they all felt like dogshit compared to most N64 titles. I haven't touched a Dreamcast since I was around 5 - since then I've tried replaying Nights on an emulator and it still feels like a dogshit game. I am extremely stoned on weed and have attached a picture that I felt would be appropriate or at least humorous when juxtaposed against this terrible massive wall of text blogpost that nobody in their right mind should have read to its conclusion. Not that anon, but consider that PSP was put in 2005 and was basically relegated to "monhun machine" by 2009. By then I don't recall seeing them in big box stores outside of maybe best buy, and even then remember that the great recession was going on and maybe anon's family wasn't going to look at brand-new electronics too often. As for Vita, it had zero chance. I only even saw another person with a vita once, and I was in college and part of several otaku groups at the time. Vita had zero penetration outside of Japan and basically stopped existing in the west before that anon was 13. Assuming anon also never went online to forums, it makes sense to me that he'd have missed them both, as neither had a lot of penetration in his age group, by my experience anyway.

SonicnAdventure has better music and more style than both Mario 64 and OoT. Had Nintendo made it every single thread on this forum would be SA1/2 discussions. And what did Sega do wrong with dreamcast? Vmu was stylish and new. Games were on point, 4 ports for controllers and a built in modem off the bat. Great launch as well unlike ps2 and gamecube. At least xbox had halo to begin with.

They fucked up with the marketing.
"it's thinking" was a garbage strapline that gained little to no traction.
It should have been released 1-2 years later with a DVD drive and ethernet support, and then Sega would still be making consoles today.
The console still reminds me of the millennium, before the world went dark.

Yeah, it was called the Xbox.

Yeah I know. It was why I bought an Xbox at the time and have most of the Sega games.
But they did have the opportunity to be a company as big as SIE are today ($25 billion revenue vs around $2 billion), and royally fucked it up.

Back then? The Dreamcast was being sold everywhere and it wasn't that obscure, the issue was that a lot of people in Europe were just waiting for the PS2 and kind of snobbed it, i even considered asking my father to buy it but then decided to buy a PC and later a PS2 instead.

you sure
I remember vividly we had to return two for disc readers being broken and we had to be waitlisted, on top of that only funcoland carried it

Not sure what to tell you. I wasn’t from a major city or anything and the Dreamcast was readily available at Walmart. We didn’t even have a Funcoland, just a small Electronics Boutique at the local mall.

And actually, I recall our local Blockbuster offering Dreamcast console rentals before the official launch. My one friend rented one during the summer of 1999 a couple months before the September launch.

Goddam.... The only people i ever knew in my life that had a DC..was a black family(family friends) so when we would go over the son would bring it out like it was something great. I cant say there was anything bad about it. But all we played was some like sports skiing game. It was coo i guess being a skater kid i was into it but my first thought was what the fuck was all this extra shit on the remote i guess for playing more arcade type games but i didnt get the chance.

Even if you think its better, it just doesn't feel as big and in-depth as Mario/Zelda.

I love Crazy taxi, JSR, and HOTD, but they're arcade experiences in a time where games were becoming more cinematic and in-deptch. Totally different genre, but Crazy Taxi isn't as much of a groundbreaker as Grand Turismo was for the average person who wanted more out of a car game. JSR is stylish as hell but Tony Hawk games dominated the market and jsr had harder controls and gameplay with a very short campaign. HOTD relies on peripherals to really be fun. And PS1 had all the Resident Evil games before CV already so it wasn't as much of a big deal

Sonic Adventure 2 isn’t Shadow the Hedgehog, anon. That was a separate title that was not released on Dreamcast.

It was like having 2000s arcade games at home again with Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, 18 Wheeler, Capcom stuff, Episode 1 Racer, Soul Calibur.
Every experience on that machine was hype.

Not really that obscure

I still have my family's old Sega sports edition Dreamcast from back in the day.

I censored the Estarland sticker on it (they were the ones who replaced the dead clock battery on it) because reasons.

I personally love how you can easily burn games onto cds for the system.

I don't think it was obscure at all. I was born in 98 and me and my cousin would play Spawn In The Demon's Hand and Power stone religiously until the 360 and ps3 came out
