I was born in 1991 and Dreamcast was never popular in Northern Europe at least. Never knew anyone with one, never even heard about it. I think I found out about its existence like a decade after its release. Because literally no one had it or talked about it.

Sega would have been bankrupt and parted out if they heald on to DC while it slowly sank into obscurity. It is not a rare piece of hardware, but by todays standard it is modestly common.

Where I live, it was like 50% obscure. My uncle got me a Dreamcast for my 12th birthday and I never even heard of it before that day. I showed it to neighbor kids and they were wowed, one guy then told everybody I have a Sega Saturn lol.

You could ask a store seller if they have any Dreamcast games and they looked at you like you asked for some alien shit or something.
But some other stores were selling Dreamcast games and accessories all the time.

It was like... a thing for a smaller circle of people. Those who knew and cared.
Others were playing PS1.

I was the only kid in high school that had one, all my friends had PlayStation or N64 and were 'waiting for PS2' instead of getting a Dreamcast. One other kid got one around 2001 or 2002 but he pretty much only played pirated games on it.
It was a shame, even my PS2 friends loved playing Dreamcast with games like Crazy Taxi and DoA2.

I decided to wait on the ps2 because I could get a lot of games for consoles I already had vs. a console and one game, but one of my friends had one. I ended up getting one for dirt cheap in like 2004 when burned games started floating around my high school.

I played a couple games, including Nights, but they all felt like dogshit compared to most N64 titles. I haven't touched a Dreamcast since I was around 5 - since then I've tried replaying Nights on an emulator and it still feels like a dogshit game. By then I don't recall seeing them in big box stores outside of maybe best buy, and even then remember that the great recession was going on and maybe anon's family wasn't going to look at brand-new electronics too often. As for Vita, it had zero chance. I only even saw another person with a vita once, and I was in college and part of several otaku groups at the time. Vita had zero penetration outside of Japan and basically stopped existing in the west before that anon was 13. Assuming anon also never went online to forums, it makes sense to me that he'd have missed them both, as neither had a lot of penetration in his age group, by my experience anyway.

My favorites were Sonic Adventures 2 and Skies of Arcadia. I love Crazy taxi, JSR, and HOTD, but they're arcade experiences in a time where games were becoming more cinematic and in-deptch. Totally different genre, but Crazy Taxi isn't as much of a groundbreaker as Grand Turismo was for the average person who wanted more out of a car game. JSR is stylish as hell but Tony Hawk games dominated the market and jsr had harder controls and gameplay with a very short campaign. HOTD relies on peripherals to really be fun. And PS1 had all the Resident Evil games before CV already so it wasn't as much of a big deal
