How common was it for PC ports of games to come with controllers?

It wasn't that common but the PC version of Street Racer came out with a faux SNES pad and it was a selling point for me, I then used the pad for all my emulation needs with Nesticle etc

the controller was neat but holy crap the midi tracks in that port are horrible

>> No.9176618

>>9176404
I have no idea what the fuck they were thinking with those MIDI conversions. Easily some of the worst I've ever heard, which is a real shame because it's a good soundtrack. Seems like they just converted the SNES tracks to MIDI and assigned random instruments. The percussion in particular is a real head-scratcher.

>> No.9176648

I bought Star Wars tie fighter when it came out and it came with a joystick but it was probably just a retailer bundle.

>> No.9177292

>>9176618
From what I've read, the percussion is simply not mapped or mapped to tom toms or someshit (I'm no musician). Weird no one attempted to fix it, but then again there's a myriad of other ways to play Megaman games.

>> No.9177713

>>9177292
It's mapped to the timpanis or pitched toms yeah, something absolutely bizarre. The Japanese are MIDI wizards so it really makes no sense. Even western devs were quite MIDI-savvy so it's just inexplicable.

I had a bundle from EA that came with Moto Racer, Madden '99 and Tiger Woods 99. It came with a Gravis GamePad pro (gameport) controller, but the controller did not have an EA logo on it.

Usually those types of bundles happens when a publisher has a large quantity of unsold games that they need to move out fast.

I guess they figured if they didn't the consumer might try to play w/ keyboard and mouse? Can't have that.

we should all be so lucky to get a bonafide saturn controller included with our console-to-pc ports

sega used to know how to court their fans

I had three of those controllers, the "Play Sega" kind. They quickly stopped working for no reason, as if their battery had been drained, even though they're wired. I have no clue of what happened.

build quality was absolutely atrocious, nothing like the original saturn pads.

Thanks! That explains it. I had my fair share of chink controllers and none of them stopped working as suddenly as those Play Sega. They were the worst controllers I've ever tried.

I can name more PC ports that did not come with controllers.

>>9178469

The Puyo Puyo Fever controller is one of my favorite color variations the controller. The game is not as good as prior iterations, but the main selling point was the included controller.

>>9179150
I remember the Play Sega controllers were just rebranded cheap unlabeled controllers. Similar to the ones you can find at $5USD for two sets that were abundant at the time.

Could anyone still buy a decent USB Saturn-like controller these days?

>> No.9179317

The Retro-Bit ones are pretty good as far as I can tell. I used one at a friend’s house and it felt pretty much on par with my real Saturn controller back at home.

>> No.9179353

Thanks, but that probably won't work for me. I live in the 3rd-world, so getting one from Amazon (or similar retailer) is too expensive; for comparison, it'd be like paying $80~120 (USD) for it – affordable, but way beyond its value. Anyway, I've read that either it works wonderfully or it's a mess, depending on your luck.

Can also vouch that they're quite good but definitely not worth any kind of import tax or markup, sorry to hear it anon.

Not /vr/ at all but I often think about how fucking absurd it was for EB Games to ship Dark Souls 1 on PC with a mouse and pad. The mouse is truly woeful and of course actually using it for the game is dogshit.

Another awful quality Sega controller is the 6-button Mega Drive controller that ships with the korean PC version of Guilty Gear X
Not only is the plastic its made of absolutely awful but it's also a gameport controller and due to amount of buttons it requires its own special terrible drivers to work

>> No.9179761

I've run into a handful of people that insist playing with a mouse and keyboard is better than a controller. People will be contrarians about literally anything.

>> No.9179819

>>9179729
I think, software-wise, things are better now. Your average d-input or x-input driver can cleanly take care of everything. But where is the hardware? The best I can get is a "ehhh... good enough" controller. It gets the job done, but I'd like to have a newer controller that fits right with retro gaming. I have two RetroFlag Super Nintendo controllers (one american, one japanese), they could be very close to what I wanted, they're good, but the american has a little trouble with the shoulder buttons, and the japanese one is a little too sensitive with its diagonals. I opened them both (interior design pretty close to an actual SNES controller), cleaned with rubbing alcohol, then reassembled with care. Their problems diminished, but aren't gone. I still use them both, they're my main gamepads, though every time a bit of problem occurs, I always groan "that didn't happen with my original controllers".

There are a few. The one that seems to be around these days are the Retro-bit ones, but I have not tried them yet.

Most PC ports just come with the game alone. Typically only special editions may come with additional accessories.
