This game was bad, and we can all admit that we did not have a fun time playing through it. But what really went wrong with this game?

I can only speculate about reasons, maybe they just had zero budget or something, but I can list some of the flaws:

- Barely any connection to Phantasy Star universe
- Fucking terrible graphics in general
- No apparent art direction, meaning enemies would appear in wildly different graphic styles, sizes, etc as if they were drawn by random people who never talked to each other
- Towns filled with empty houses discouraging exploration
- Weirdass magic system
- Weirdass combat system
- Et cetera

For me, it was the magic system, the messy menus, boring dungeons, battle commands, and plain world.
Oh, and characters with no personality whatsoever.

Eh? I enjoyed it. Fuck you.

Yeah it did get a lot wrong. Though how many games (on the Genesis) let you follow your hero and his/her ancestors with multiple endings.

>> No.917440

-everything throughout the whole game is poisonous (even the robots)

-Anti (the poison cure spell) has a high failure rate

-there's no way to restore MP outside of towns

-you have a limited inventory that is cluttered up with a lot of useless plot junk so you're limited in how many antidotes you can carry

Also the characterization was ass. People said one line throughout the whole game and suddenly you're given the choice to marry them. Half the time I had no idea who they even were or why they were following me.

Release date deadlines. It's a blatently unfisnished game. It may or may not have been good if the developers had time to finish the game.

The folks tasked with developing the game were the same tame who developed Golden Axe -and they didn't know what an RPG was supposed to be.

Nei was made of monster cells, so the cloning guy would not make a clone of her.

PS3 had a lot of cool concepts: the whole multiple generations thing, dynamic battle music, customizable magic, etc. However, somehow every single one of those concepts was pulled off badly and the core mechanics were pretty unpolished as well. It's a shame, as the game definitely had the potential to be pretty amazing.

The developers were lacking some combination of the necessary time/money/skill needed to pull it off. A less ambitious project that borrowed more from the previous games might have been more successful, but...who knows.

That's probably the result of having different development teams tackle something they weren't around for in the beginning

Sega had a lot of those things

I finally picked up and started playing PS3 a few weeks ago on a whim.

As someone who missed out on PS1 and PS3, played a bit of PS2 until the constant need to grind bored me to tears (and only recently played through and beat it), and worshipped PS4.... PS3 is undeniably the shittiest og Phantasy Star. Everything about it is inconsistent with the rest of the series.

I still need to finish it (I'm doing all four Generation III characters simultaneously... I don't want to have to come back to this game) but I doubt the game will ever live up to its promise. Too bad, too... some of the characters could have been interesting with a little personality.

It's too bad the Sega Ages remakes stopped at PSII. I think, had they taken up PSIII, that the developers could have injected some real life back into this game and make it a proper Phantasy Star. Until then, we'll always have this delicious fanart.

Cloning grandma clones her any other time, what changed?

Probably just the usual reasons a game with good talent behind it ends up shitty. They ran out of money / time.

The last boss was in a fucking box, for christ's sake.
