Reminder that this game is actually called Tales of Eternia. The real Tales of Destiny 2 was never localized, sadly.

Abyss is better

It's the campiest one, but has the best battle system. They revamped it in RC but it wasn't nearly as fun with the mashing the d-pad to speed up spell casting. Issue with ToD2 is the overworld sucks, but in its defense you get 3 overworlds. Present, Past, Future

Agree. The people that came in only because of the nintendo systems weren't here from the start, don't play tri-ace, didn't import any, and can't even name their favorite hi-ougi.

>> No.9164827

>>9163851
To be fair, when Symphonia came out there were only like 2 other Tales games available in America and both were relatively obscure. Symphonia was most people's first exposure to the series outside of DeJap's infamous ToP translation. And then Legendia wasn't all that impressive in comparison to Symphonia.

Not getting the PS1 ToP remake and Rebirth pretty much left Symphonia as the peak of the series in America for a good while.

Even Nintendo has been using emulation since the OoT release on GameCube.

They have similar problems in structure, except Legendia actually has good writing. Rebirth has a better battle system, but you don't get to play it because the game is all dialogue after the Geyorkias fight.

See my post: (>>9163162)
Namco's US division apparently thought it would be a good idea to capitalize on the brand recognition of Tales of Destiny and just call the next game they localized Tales of Destiny II instead of Eternia, its actual title seemingly. I still want to play the actual Tales of Destiny II, I think only that and Rebirth are unlocalized at this point as far as the mainline games go. I played the fan translation of ToD Director's Cut last year, it was fun.

>> No.9165763

>>9165754
I think it's because "Eternia" is trademarked by Mattel because of He-Man. Namco probably would have been able to get around that but the suits probably didn't want to bother. Kind of like how they didn't fight for Soul Edge and just changed it to Soul Blade.

>> No.9165774

>>9165763
Maybe, I didn't even think of that. They didn't even bother releasing the PSP version in the US it seems, at least Europe got it unlike the PSX version (and kept the Eternia name.)

>> No.9165812

>>9165748
Should be noted that the PSP version is pretty much objectively the best way to play it. Battles go from 30 FPS to 60, and movies that were cut from the original were put back in. The only downside is battle shortcuts were made slightly more annoying (L + O/X instead of L2 or R2) due to the PSP having less buttons.
The same applies to all of the Tales ports on the PSP too, they're all the best versions of each game.

>> No.9165868

>>9165283
The opinion of a man who plays a game he hates for 15 hours before deciding to stop shouldn't be trusted. 5 hours max on any JRPG is all you need. If it hasn't gotten good by then, it never will, but a lot of them need at least that long to open up.

The early ones, yeah. Destiny and Eternia have skits cut, Symphonia and Abyss have skit voices cut, and Legendia had the entire second half of the game unvoiced. Vesperia was the first one that was all there in localization.

I played Destiny ps1 out of curiosity and hoo boy, that generational bridge hurts it. Phantasia felt like an "early ps1 game" but Destiny feels like "a late SNES game". I know that sounds wack, but my point being is that going from Phantasia to Destiny does not impress much. Then I played Eternia (or rather "Destiny II") and GODDAMN what a jump. Battles felt more kickass and looked notably more interesting. Exploring the world felt like it was actually made for that console generation. It's too bad it didn't get much exposure back then, because I think even casuals could have enjoyed it, if they weren't so fixated on "CUTTING-EDGD 3D GRAFIX" thanks to square's bullshot advertising schemes. GOD, even the fucking random battle music just hits so much harder than Destiny. Felt so good to go from https://youtu.be/yN1TWPdszRY to https://youtu.be/EaUjQVhobQU

The developers got it all right with this one in that aspect, then never made a 2d game again.

I'm conflicted on the dub. I appreciate that the actors (mostly) don't ham it up doing typical anime dub silly voices, but instead they often sound uninterested and very obviously reading their lines directly off the script. Would like a little bit more enthusiasm, especially for the battle voices.

This is probably the biggest factor. It affected all those games. Nobody really bought Arc the Lad Collection either. Its hard to attract people to last gen RPGs as is, let alone when something like FFX was on the horizon.
