There are several cabinet kits you can buy online for less than $600 which would beat this thing in every way. Some of them will let you use a 19" PC CRT, which would be perfect for MVC2.

All the MVC2 cabinets around me I remember had the controls out front almost free-standing away from the screen which had 2 huge speakers to the sides. It was the standard cabinet type for a lot of fighting games I played back then for Project Justice, CVS2, and all the games listed there but not in that style of cabinet. I vaguely remember the screen or glass was curved trinitron-style (cylindrical). What was that cabinet styled called? I want one for those games. No, especially when many people would want to put this in a garage, basement, or other place that's not the middle of their home, or even have a soundproofed room for games / music. If someone's got a bigger setup then you end up with a shitload of devices all on the wifi. Many otherwise first-world countries also have deliberately shit internet, not to mention people that live out in rural areas and don't have access to the best internet so the wifi stinks. For 600 dollars you should have an ethernet option. You're going to be playing this with a small group of people who all bought the same expensive set, and going to have to settle for playing with people pretty distant and with shit internet.

YES!! That is it! I would love to have those but I don't have the money nor the space to house one, but I can only dream when I win the lottery, so I'll try to remember "showcase cabinet". That is how a MVC2 cabinet should look like. The one in OP's picture looks more like a Mortal Kombat cabinet than the ones that housed MVC2/Tekken 3/Project Justice. I think there was another kind of cabinet with a larger (guessing it was projection screen) with free-standing controls in front that I remember seeing MVC1/X-Men Vs. Street Fighter housed in (it might even be the same as the cabinet for Mad Dog McCree), I remember the speakers were underneath the viewing area, which would be more suitable a look than the cabinet OP features.

I think you're underestimating how many people buy these. You can get them at fucking Walmart. I see people in buy/sell/trade groups selling these all the time and they pretty much always get a fair a bit of interest. I've never played one so I can't speak to the quality but it seems like quite a few folks love the idea of turning a room of their home into a mini arcade.

It comes off as a shill post if you end it with a 1970's infommerical phrase like
>it seems quite a few folks love the idea of turning a room into a mini arcade!
Anyways, in the event you're not a shill, I'd love to see the sales or an online report for stuff like this. Most sites like Walmart have only a small amount of reviews for the units and they also come off as astroturf, but even then, if they are legit you have to wonder the appeal of MvC2 for 600 dollars in the current day and how many serious players will get it and how long they will play it for. Besides all my other issues this would be my biggest concern. If the company can show proof their online shit actually has a sustained userbase then that would be good.

>The machines were not scratched and scuffed when arcades were in their prime.
They absolutely were. The area around the controls were always covered in burn marks since people chains smoked as they played and laid their lit cigarettes above the buttons. People also routinely carved their initials in them (the same 3 letters they use for entering high scores, often words like ASS or FUK, or drug references that teens thought were hilarious like LSD or POT). You routinely saw these in high score lists and also carved on the side of the cabinet or down low around the coin door.

Crowds of teenagers gathered around the machines in their heyday and graffiti was inevitable, especially if the arcade operator couldn't see. My own tekken 2 cabinet has "LSD" carved in the side of it.

oh for sure, lack of ethernet is definitely weird considering it shouldn't cost too much extra to slap one in but whatever I guess, as long as the wifi is functional. as far as playerbase goes, the best youll probably get is word of mouth from people who actually own em. i heard the mvc ones only tend to have decent player counts for mvc and xmen, seems like MSH and MVSF for example are doing too hot because they're locked to respective cabinets. since they're compiling all the games into one cabinet player counts will probably be a bit healthier overall, but I imagine youll still struggle a bit with certain games

You're not wrong about their popularity, and I got one so I'm contributing to what a lot of people here hate, but as far as turning a room into an arcade: I kinda better like the idea of the wall hanging models. If they had more versions of those, ones with more/more advanced games I would've gotten that instead. And I might gotten two since I have more space for it (assuming I could play MP over network with them).
Just seems like a better fit for a product like this for people like me that don't mind some novelty shit.

Still might mod mine into a mame machine, but it's nice to just be able to slap it together and have it working instead of having another project to do.

Maximum dunning-kruger moment, anon.
MVC2 runs in 640x480. The same for most other NAOMI and Atomiswave games.

You're referring to the days around the early 90s in the fighting game boom. That's not really the prime of the arcade imo. Also that was more of a convenience store and bowling alley situation you're describing. Or smaller arcades next to liquor stores.

Big budget arcades you'd get into deep shit for laying your cigarette on the cabinet or carving into them.

Some arcades were seriously sketchy in the mid 80s. We frequently had copcars show up at my local arcade looking for local troublemakers. Nothing serious, mostly minor drug dealers and people who skipped their court dates for vandalism and shoplifting etc.

This arcade was a meeting place for a local fence who handled a lot of stolen goods, they would meet at the arcade and then go out and pop the trunk of a car and move shit to his van. There were no cel phones yet so the arcade was a good place to hang out all day when people needed to find him to offload goods. We never had anything like stabbings which were frequent in bigger city arcades with ethnic gangs. Mine was 100% white people, with just the skids who hung out there causing the problems.

If you wanted to buy a dime bag or sell a stolen tapedeck the arcade was the best starting point. A lot of local politicians were calling for laws forcing arcades to close early or shut down entirely because of their close association with petty crime and selling drugs to kids. This went national and all arcade games were eventually required to flash a "winners don't use use drugs" PSA starting in 1989.

I guess it really depends if your local arcade was a chuck-e-cheese family place, or a place where people 15-24 would hang out. Overall arcades were a nationwide concern although the media hyped how dangerous they were in the mid 80s.

I was mentioning the cabinet that OP displays is not how I remember the cabinets for MVC2 looked like. I'm trying to remember, but it doesn't even resemble Final Fight cabinets which were more "inset" for the screen and the controls at more of an angle. I remember 2 World Warrior cabinets, one with a large speaker grill underneath the screen and another with the controls flat/level with a wide base sort of like a Pit Fighter cabinet. I think OP's cabinet is supposed to be for Mortal Kombat and not MVC2.
