Only game i feel you cant properly experience is Tower of Druaga or similar that were designed in such a way that secrets are learned as a playerbase. Kind of like modern games, except now everything is known and posted for easy access as soon as its discovered. And its not like "pokemon old man glitch", the entire structure of the game is around learning these obtuse secrets to progress rather then enhance it.

Maybe? There are a couple games that match your description. You might be thinking of the Swordquest games by atari since thats the only "series" im aware of with a contest tied to it.

Druaga is proto Zelda released by Namco in arcades. You can just play it as a normal arcade dungeon trek, but to get to later levels, you need to know a series of vague actions in levels that all look the same that makes "lol burn the bush" seem like the most obvious clue out there. I saw an anon on here claim the original arcade release in japan would have a notebook chained to it where players would write down things they discovered. Closest modern comparison would be those blood stains in Demons Souls where it shows how other players died.

Man, Druaga. There is something about it and its secrets that strike a chord.
It's almost like an actual arcane ritual. 'Draw your sword once in the southeast corner, then touch the north wall to make the treasure appear', that sort of thing.

Pretty clever actually. I bet many 100yen coins were wasted futzing about trying to see if anything would result from strange actions.

Japan had a massive hint book industry. Publishers working d with game designers and got original concept art and other assets, and all the secrets. Druaga was a hit game so it had multiple publishers release similar 90 page guide books in 1984/1985.

The Japanese rely on walkthrough far more that western gamers did, especially in the 80s.

I think Druaga is a really fascinating game so I'm pleased to see people talking about it. I would say the most similar thing that you can have to it in the modern age is probably an ARG. Those usually have the same sort of community effort to figure a mystery out. The bloodstains in the Souls games are also a good comparsion, but that doesn't quite invoke direct cooperation unlike what was definitely present in Druaga's heyday.

Very, very few games fall under this category. If you’re looking at Gen 1/2 games and expecting them to be more than diversions, you’re retarded. They were never meant to be more.

The only games that are “outdated” fall into one of a few categories:

1. They relied primarily on graphical or technical achievements, i.e. Virtua Racer on the Genesis. Even at the time there were much better racers, but having 3D polygon environments on the Genesis was insane. Now, it’s mostly a novelty.

2. Games that have been entirely supplanted by better versions. This can be a literal straight upgrade of another game—like, I dunno, the PSP port of FF2 or something—or they can just be entirely outdone in what they’re trying to do (many sim games, console ports of arcade games that have much better ports, etc.)

3. Games that relied on some kind of outside source that no longer exists. This includes, obviously, defunct MMOs and the like. Tower of Druaga could fall into the category as anon mentioned above, but I don’t think it does—personally I played and enjoyed the game long after its release at home with no arcade community to talk to

These are the only reason an otherwise good game could become “outdated” in a way that would make it not worth playing, but not even every game that fits into these categories applies. For example, there are much better flight sims that Aero Elite: Combat Academy out there but I still had a blast playing it last year

When you make one game you aren't completely sure what aspect made it work and there isn't a standard structure to follow yet so the sequel will try new things. Then if those things fail the third goes back to the original and tends to refine it so well that it establishes the standard that defines the franchise going forward. Some games skip the intermediate step and just nail it with the sequel like Mega Man 2 and Street Fighter II. I guess with RPGs its just harder to figure out what elements to focus on right out of the gate.

NTA but bold? Yeah maybe, but it's still true. Japan had an entire cottage industry devoted to various hint books for video games in the eighties, so much so that it makes up a significant portion of their retro gaming market even today. I suspect Star Fox 64 was intended to be a prequel but because of the inherent weirdness that comes with the way Nintendo does things that just kind of vanished halfway through. Kind of like how A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time both kinda sorta wanted to be prequels but then everything just went off the rails because none of it made sense and nobody actually cared enough about the way the games interacted with each other.

There's really no reason to play any game from the system other than nostalgia, nearly the entirely library is arcade ports that are way worse than the original arcade game, and the only reason the system was popular back in the day was the appeal of being able to play arcade games at home.

The games that weren't arcade ports/clones are mostly just not very fun, not many unique games for the atari that weren't just completely outdone by something on the NES.

Nowadays when you can just use MAME there's no reason for any of these games to be played.

also this controller is complete dick

idk why gamers will download all these third-party fixes for a game instead of just, playing a game that doesn't need to be fixed. Like Elden Ring. Fuck me that game is so perfect

Passwords
Cons - writing it down, certain letters and numbers look the same, putting it in
Pros - no battery required, can start wherever, no need to transfer save files for different platforms, online password generators
I'm probably gonna try the password for Mega Man X that starts with Chill Penguin dead without the leg upgrade.

Japan is a very, very different place. If you ever go to an anime-themed collaboration cafe, they'll often have a book where guests can draw fan art or write something, you flip through them and there's hundreds of little sketches, and not a single one of them is inappropriate.

I don't have any pictures of the books because they usually ask people not to take photos, since people might write their names or personal information in it. But they do the walls too, so

If it was fun back then, it's fun today.

There are two things in games that are fun:
1) Making (impactful) choices, in story-based games
2) Challenging your reflexes or quick thinking in action games

Graphics don't make a game fun or not fun. Zork was released in 1977 and it's still fun in 2022, and has no graphics.

Nintendo power barely gave more than a few tips or walkthroughs of the first 2-3 levels. It contained very few late game secrets.

The Japanese hint books were 60-90 pages and had every single stage in detail with hand holding all the way, every secret plus they functioned as collector art book. It wasn't just cryptic games like Druaga either, they had these for games as simple as 1942 where they explained where every enemy wave of planes would appear on every stage. 100% hand holding, something no American guidebook did.

One of the super Mario strategy guides was one of japan's best selling books for two years in a row (that is any book any genre). Major publishers took notice.

The Sega master system was similar, the vast majority of its library are very poor to borderline passable arcade ports, or demakes of 16 bit Genesis hit games released half a year after the real game.

Other than a few gems like phantasy star you are far better off just using mame or a Genesis to play the real versions of the games as the developer envisioned them.

Game guides are a much deeper part of Japanese gamer culture than they ever were in America. They see guidebooks as part artbook, part collectible on top of being their "gamefaqs".

To this day when people preorder a game they often buy the game guide to go with it. I've been in akihabara on launch day and far more people bought the guide book than didn't, I would say maybe 1 in 4 skipped the guidebook. But that is day 1 loyal fans who will buy anything and everything with the game brand logo on it. Game publishers worked alongside the guide publishers to make these day 1 sales possible and Japanese consumers came to expect them.

So yea even if countless guidebooks are sold for each game, the people who buy them may not necessarily use them if they want a challenge. That is up to each individual consumer.

A good portion of games prior to NES. Atari games can be fun for maybe a few minutes depending on what game but you'd be hard pressed to get me or most today actually excited to play anything released before the NES. The games are too old and too simple. When Atari had its birthday a few weeks back there was a sticky and the thread still barely got much replies. So most Atari boomers aren't even browsing here or care.

Pretty much any early 3D game with tank controls. I didn't even like it when it was fresh and new and I have no nostalgia for that shit.

But hearing few younger people care about the old Atari games makes me sad.

Original Tomb Raider games on PS1 are very hard to get into if you didn't grew up with them and played more modern third-person games like POP: Sands of Time and Gears of War: tank controls which actually worked fine for survival horror, but are abysmal for TPS with acrobatics, laggy grid based movement with Lara taking some time to get going and to stop, dpad for moving, no second stick to control the camera, low FPS, checkpoints in 1 and limited saves in 3, full 3D environments on 5th gen hardware, long levels with backtracking, too many human enemies in TR 2, sequels with little variety.

I enjoyed the overall story and atmosphere and music was geniuenly good, I don't even mind dated graphics, but I would rather play late 70s arcade game, Atari 2600 or point and click without a guide than go back to TR 1-3

I did too because my used copy was the cart only as I bought it from a rental store, and didn't have the guide book or map that it came bundled with.

I discovered walls can blow up completely by accident, same as bush burning. The only school yard lore I got was "use silver arrow on ganon" and "walk into some walls and pass through them".
