What do you consider high end, in that case? It has a Hitachi tube mind you and 11k hours on the clock, so it's not even that worn out. The service menu is awesome, allowing to adjust G2 in it, as well as a 5x5 dynamic convergence grid.
>I wouldn't be weirded out finding one even for free in Europe.
Depends where. Where I live, high-end CRT monitors are dime a dozen.

Yea fair enough, I got it for free actually. Seems lightly used because it's plenty bright even at brightness set to minimum. I'd check the hour counter (if there is any), but I've no clue about navigating the service menu.

Anybody knows what can be causing this? At first I thought there was something wrong with my CRT but it turns out the same thing happens on LCD too. Is it a problem with the cable? The console? It's a Genesis model 1 by the way.

>> No.9152431

That just looks like a shitty video connection. Try cleaning out the AV out port on your Genesis, maybe there's some gunk in there that's stopping the cable from making a good connection. If that doesn't work you probably want a new AV cable for it, if it's an old one it's probably worn out and can't carry a good signal, you can get new off brand ones for like 10$ that are good enough for composite.

Or if you're using an RF connection get a proper shielded coaxial RCA cable don't use one of those channel modulator pieces of shits or a normal RCA cable.

Might be something wrong with the genesis if none of that helps.

Has anyone else experienced something like this with PSX games? Using Silent Hill to show it, I know for a fact its because of dithering and Silent Hill I think uses it the most out of any psx game.

I tried adjusting the colors and it made it slightly better but I cant figure out how to eliminate it completely even with the color test coming out clean on 240p test suite (this picture is before I adjusted the colors). I can post my OSD settings later, TV is a Toshiba 27AF443.

You might have seen me posting thie in another thread, I'm emulating but I hooked up to a monitor just to test and it doesnt happen there so its 100% a TV issue. On a monitor it looks like original hardware.

Most players play .MKV files, asking about only the container itself is pretty meaningless though, what codecs do you mean?

Various torrent sites mostly, there's no single source, depends more on the type of media. Also archive.org has a lot of old shows.

You can convert yourself too, a HD rip of a NTSC source converted to 480i is no different than a 480i rip of a NTSC source, as long as the original didn't try to force a different framerate.

I found one of these almost locally and i really wanna pick it up but i can't for the life of me figure out what resolutions it supports. Guy who sells it says it does 480p, and it does have component input, but some other guy said these things do 480p forcing a 16:9 aspect ratio and you can't swap to 4:3, which is kind of shitty.

Model is panasonic TX-32PH40, you can find manuals and shit around but they don't specify resolutions outright and i don't see anywhere relating to input frequencies besides stuff like VHF for tv channels (which isn't even a thing anymore and fuck tv in the first place)

480p itself doesn't really have a true widescreen resolution, at least when it comes to consoles and DVDs of the era.

It was 640x480 or 720x480, depending on the format, and it could be 4:3 or 16:9, but there was also a 16:9 for 4:3 aspect ratio often provided, which was letterboxing.

Essentially this means you would need to either stretch or compress the image in order to achieve proper aspect ratio.

Considering this is a 16:9 television from an era when 4:3 content was still the most prevalent, I cannot imagine it doesn't have a Fit, Full, or Zoom function.

It's not perfect, if it's a HD TV, it will suffer from scaling latency and double images since it runs at 100Hz.
If it's just a widescreen CRT TV, latency will be less if a problem but you'll still have double images.

if you're in EU those things don't do anything above 480i so you can't even hook anything to VGA, you're better off just watching movies in that one and forgetting about the whole retro gaming thing. It's so fucking sad that you can't basically find progressive-scan models in yuroland besides rare shit like >>9155470

that said, if you like watching movies and shows and shit, that tv has colors that are comparable to modern OLEDs at a price tag that's not 1200$, aren't smart tv garbage (smart TVs are absolute hell, i have one and i hate the 'smart' shit it has i just wish it would display images and NOTHING MORE), and are built like a tank. If you so much as glance at some modern high end tv they'll just break and be unrepairable, a CRT will outlive you and when it breaks it'll just need a couple new capacitors and a tactical tap for it to outlive your sons again, sans the phophors physically degrading because time is what it is.

in other words, you'll get use out of your tv, but not for old games. If you want a tv/monitor for those, get a pvm like the meme kids or just grab a 4:3 trinitron from like the 90s (like a KX or KV model or something), or literally any other non-flat crt that exists out there, because nobody had big ass high end TVs back then, they had what their mom bought and it usually was some whatever consumer grade sony if you were lucky or literally anything else with a shadow mask on, and that's what those games were made for anyway. The aperture grille isn't inherently better for games and sometimes inferior to shadow mask. Just buy a fucking tube that's big enough for you with low enough hours and just use that.

Using RGB out of a PS2/PS3? That won't work without hacking it and it's not really Sony's fault.
For some bullshit copy-protection reason DVD players were not allowed to have analog RGB output (except for Euro SCART), so those consoles can't play DVDs over RGB. I don't know if it's just coloring everything green or just outright switching to YPbPr component when playing a DVD, since both formats share pins in the Playstation multi AV out, but it's just how it is.
Only the first Japanese PS2 model played DVDs over RGB and Sony got into some trouble at the time for this. I don't know if they got sued or anything, but they removed the option in all subsequent hardware revisions.
Overall it's fucking stupid. You can't have an analog RGB out, but in some regions it's the fucking standard, so it's allowed. PCs get a pass too. And why not block component as well? It's the same quality, hell, it's even the format that DVDs are encoded with in the first place. Total bullshit.
Anyway, for PS2 you have to use FMCB and put a modified DVD player executable on the memory card. I think some modchips also have that hack built in. For PS3 I'd imagine that CFW has a solution (for BDs as well), but I've never tried that.

Anon >>9156292 is right, both RGB and YPbPr are component signals. It's just that the word "component" is usually used for YPbPr.

Anyway, here's what actually happens when you mix them up. Typically an RGB input would be SCART (and that carries external sync on one of the pins all the time) and YPbPr would be 3 RCA connectors. So:
RGB signal into YPbPr input: no picture (no sync on the green/Y plug, so it could be rolling or just show nothing, RGsB should show up; if it shows anything then the colors are messed up anyway);
YPbPr signal into RGB input: green picture (luma treated as green, Pb and Pr make little difference here; sync is sourced from the composite video pin in SCART).
Now, that's with a standard TV. A PVM has on/off switch for external sync, so you get two more options. The above is equivalent to YPbPr with no external sync and RGB with ext sync on.

Nope, DVDs are encoded in MPEG-2, which uses the YCbCr color space. And YCbCr is the digital equivalent of YPbPr, which people usually call component.

Pretty much every Trinitron with a SCART connector did. Specially in the 90's but I have even small 80's Trinitron consumer sets that do. Also did NTSC, not just RGB and PAL60.

- CRTs are no longer produced because they have inferior picture quality versus LCDs
- CRTs emit dangerous levels of X-rays or other forms of radiation
- CRTs always have easily-visible flicker
- CRTs always cause eyestrain
- CRTs always make a high-pitched squealing noise
- CRTs contain lethal amounts of electricity, even when unplugged
- CRTs need calibration more than two to three times a year
- Overall CRT black levels are not superior to LCDs because ambient light ruins CRT black levels
- Analog CRTs have more processing time than digital LCDs due to poor RAMDAC performance
- Afterimages caused by phosphor decay are extremely annoying and are a significant downside of CRTs
- Sending an improper mode (resolution or refresh rate) to a CRT can cause permanent damage
- CRTs cannot have touchscreens
- 4:3 is so bad that nobody should use a non-widescreen CRT
- The Sony GDM-FW900 is the only CRT worth owning
- Curved CRTs have objectively inferior picture quality versus flat CRTs with otherwise equal specifications
- CRTs should not be used because they are heavier and deeper than LCDs
- CRTs have severe reflections because they do not have matte coats

To "fix" it you can increas horizontal size, either with a remote in the service menu or with a potenciometer on the mainboard

I like the mitsushita brand but their later products were a bit too fragile for me.
I think the 90s is when they peaked and made the best sets like this 28' panasonic. It has RGB inputs a good service menu, RCA out and anything else you could want.
It can even tell if you g2 is too low or high for good gamma in the service menu, truly a masterpiece of TV design

>> No.9158242

What you probably didnt know is that panasonic used multiple factory to make their tubes, one of them is from germany one from the UK.
Despite these regional differences the qualits of the EURO 4H chassis is outstanding and not matched by cheaper sets, only Toshiba JVC and achieve the same or higher quality.
Their TVs are exceptionally serviceable with the mainboard being removable with 6 screws and just pulling out, negating the need for a complete dissasembly.
Despite that working on the later EURO 4 chasis is a bit difficult due to the placement of the screws but its still a well documented and easy to service TV with a higly comprahensible service manual.
Without a doubt these TVs set a high standard for Television manufacturers of the time.
The build and engeneering quality remains unchallendged even today.

>> No.9158248

So to anyone considering picking up a panasonic of this era it can only be encouraged.
Alot of manufactures like Palladium replicated mitshitas design but do not be fooled: the panasonic sets are superior in every way.
Though adjustment of geometry and convergance in the service menu may be a little limited, it easy to correct with convergance magnets due to free space around the yoke.
This is why I like the Euro-4 chassis from Panasonic.

None if there's no scaling (just output 240p or 480i or if it does 31kHz, 480p), it's both analog. Maybe a few nanoseconds because the transistor switching time.

You can either transcode or I've seen people use HDMI to Component adapters work fine for that.

If it accepts 31kHz in general, it might also do it over RGBS, all you'd need is a VGA to SCART cable. Many 31kHz capable TVs did.

>It's literally the best monitor original Nokia made. IIRC that monitor has MORE DYNAMIC CONVERGENCE zones than the fucking GDM-F520
It is not the best Nokia monitor. Mine is a rare 125KHz variant of the 445Xpro. It is the *fastest* Nokia monitor on par with 445pro which has a Trinitron tube with a tighter pitch, making it the superior monitor. Nokia 445xi plus is a 110KHz .22 Hitachi SM, which I would consider the best out of Nokia's monitors. It does not have more dynamic convergence zones than the Sony GDM-F520. Nokia has a 5x5 dynamic convergence grid accessible from the service menu, which for 1999 is absolutely insane. But the GDM-F520 has a 7x5 grid iirc. Overall Nokia monitors are excellent, but not the state of the art level as Sony's GDM-F520 or Mitsubishi's 2070SB.
>>9158751
>One of the most unreliable marks of its price class for sure
Haven't had any problems with it yet, seems alright. It's very well built, the shielding is THICK. Nokia TV's are surprisingly garbage, though. I have one and the power button is unreliable, there's a white line in the top part of the screen, various artifacts when connected to either of the SCART inputs (no S-Video or RCA even), and the cherry on top are the absolutely terrible speakers which distort louder frequencies. Only thing good about it is the tube itself, which is a Japan-made Toshiba tube. The picture is sharp and the geometry is good. There were also Nokia TV's manufactured by ITT, those might be better than the ones manufactured by Nokia. Thankfully, I now have a much better Sony Trinitron TV.

I told him it will sell faster if they put it on the website, but this is an issue of people running the website not giving a shit, nothing I or my boss can do about it really. The web store has like 3 products on it, in reality we have a dozen stores across the city and each one has tens of thousands of items for sale. These are like huge former factory buildings turned into stores, but because there's next to zero online presence, most people don't even know about all this recycled and retro/vintage stuff we are selling for cheap.
You can find all kinds of super rare or valuable retro gaming stuff at our stores too for cheaper than usual prices.
I just got two Dreamcasts to work today, gonna test and put them up for sale tomorrow. Had Power Stone and ChuChu Rocket games with them too.

No, you've completely failed to see the point in what i said.
You can be fucking 45 or 50 or 60 and still not fucking get it, and you can be 16 and understand what's up. It all depends on your understanding on the technology behind CRTs, and you really don't get any of it if you think there's no difference between consumer sets.
Aperture grille vs shadow mask, some even dot pitch, accepted resolutions, tube quality, AUDIO QUALITY (bet you didn't think about that one huh), input modes, phosphor material, size, all that comes from different manufacturers from different sets. It's like saying nowadays, any LG oled panel is the same as any other consumer VA samsung panel. You don't need to be a boomer to know what's up. My parents didn't understand the point of CRTs before i autistically explained it to them and many people younger than me (think people born after 9/11) get it BETTER than people who actually used CRTs as normal consumer TVs, even black and white sets in the case of my 60s born mother. It's a matter of understanding what the technology could offer you at different price points, which is why PVMs and KVs and XVs are sought after much more than other sets and why these threads exist in the first place, IE making sense of a technology to the best of our abilities before it goes *literally extinct*.
You're not a zoomer boomer *oomer whatever, you're just a nigger. Go read some manuals and shit or better yet, go lick the terminals under an anode cap and tell me how it feels. I bet it's good shit. Go do whatever but don't come and explain shit to people who're trying to make the best of the twilight of a technological era just because you want ego points, you god damn estrogen slurping troon fucker. kind of a sign of the ages, CRTs are going the way of the dinosaur and they'll be regarded as antiquities in 10 years time. Think the BTTF 2 scene where the lady at the antiquity store explains to marty what a dust jacket is and shows him a battery powered duster. That's where we're headed and scalpers are just around the corner waiting for that.

Shit, we're getting to that point with PS2 games and soon will be the time for ps3, if it's not like that already (good luck finding an Ar tonelico/Ar ciel copy for a sensible price). I got like a hundred+ PS2 games back when gamestop didn't know what to do with them and just sold them for 5 bucks a pop, 10 if they were 'rare', and now some of the titles i have now command turbonigger prices. How much of a poverty line poorfag or a kike do you have to be to not afford a 30 euro microwave? You could've bought a used microwave for less than that and not have to clean up months worth of dirt, bugs, water and other trash.

Do you even use your CRTs? Around 50k hours is max a CRT (tube) can take, even if you replace electronic over time. But even half that and it's already too dim and the blacks will be too crushed to have a good experience.

Deboonked by /g/ anon who keeps his CRT monitor running 24/7 for a few years now. It's probably nearly 80k hours at this point. And it's an iiyama monitor mind you, which are generally lower quality than brands like Sony, Eizo, NEC or Mitsubishi. Moreover, 50k hours is 5,7 years of 24/7 use. Assuming you're playing on it 4 hours a day, everyday for a year, that's 1460 hours. 33 years to reach 50k hours if we round that 1460 hours up to 1,5k hours a year. Mitsubishi Superbright monitors might last much, much longer than a regular CRT since their guns were engineered to withstand blasting a 300 nits picture. FYI, I don't daily drive my CRT's, I use my CRT monitor for vidya and 4:3 anime, and my CRT TV for consoles and watching films on DVD. You too shouldn't daily drive them for things like browsing interwebz if you're so concerned about having enough for a lifetime.

Yeah, he hasn't run his monitor for 6 years straight. I know him, I've been in /g/ CRT and retro threads for over a decade.
I on the other hand actually have monitors with 60k hours on them, they have counters in the OSD, since they are high end CRTs for the time (Mitsubishi and Sony).

At 60k hours, the tube has extreme wear, brightness and contrast are low with burn in.
I see no reason to use a CRT over 25k-30k if I can just use one with 5k on it instead.

Also I plan to live to 80 with a good estimate, so they need to last over 40 years with a good picture.

I'd say this is cope by someone who lives in a tiny apartment but even then you can rent storage or have a temperature controlled basement, so no idea why you'd use a 50k+ CRT for retrogaming if you're not forced to do so at gunpoint. Good CRTs are plentiful, free and easy to store right now, so where's the problem?

Next time also read my whole post before replying, I wasn't talking about 50k hours even.

Cathode wear is not like most types of wear where it happens no matter what, cathode wear is specifically caused by manufacturing impurities poisoning the cathode over time (there are other failure modes but thats the main one).
A well build crt will wear down much slower then a bad one because less bad material will build up on the cathode, thats why modern crts with modern manufacturing technigues are very reliable.
The second big factor in wear is the Beam current.
The harder you drive the cathode, the faster it dies exponentially, if you double the brightness you quadrouple the wear.
So if you were to run a crt with minimal gain and below 20% contrast it would most likely last several hundred thousand hours, but offcourse thats not practical because you need high contrast for a decent picture.
Im pretty sure it would even be possible to make a crt with two sets of cathodes and once the first ones emissions drop below an unacceptable level the second set of cathodes gets used, I read up that somewhere, maybe another anon knows more.

There is digital image processing on the mx4200 , but it doesn't cause lag, what it does is have a sharpening filter to make things appear brighter like a lot of late stage high end crt's had. the mx8000 is the bigger brother and has a physical cable onto the neck board which you can pull out to entirely disable it if you don't like the look. But it doesn't cause frame lag, just an artificially sharpened image which honestly I've always barely been able to tell its there.

>> No.9161886

>>9161872
It does, people have benchmarked the 4200 against the 4000, it's a real thing. Since the 4200 is a entirely flat tube and the 4000 is curved, it also makes perfect sense, just like many others.

The latency is only in the range of 1-2 frames though, so it's impossible to benchmark by eye.

Both have the automatic image adjust though which has nothing to do with processing the signal though, it only adjust brightness, contrast and color according to the ambient room lighting. It can easily be disabled though.
