The prototype version for Gimmick Land had an English translation drop today https://www.romhacking.net/translations/6617/

The game was fully finished and intended for release, but Nintendo asked AlphaDream to rework the contents of Gimmick Land and incorporate them into an upgraded experience on their latest Game Boy iteration which went on to become Tomato Adventure.

Translator of the GBA version chiming in, just wanna say congratulations on the release, and here's to hoping that you didn't have to make too many, or too severe of, cuts to get the script to fit in the GBC version. I thought a certain person might have been working on, or possibly have completed, some proportional font ASM, but perhaps I was mistaken.

Where is the ROM for this in the Gigaleak files?

OP chiming in to say I am not affiliated with this translation and was just giving a heads up to interested parties. All I did was the box art which I do for games that interest me. Thanks for the translation of the gba version by the way.

GBC version is unfinished. Full translation, or fuck off. Don't know why anyone even bothered, given that no one plays Game Boy titles on non-GBA hardware if they help it.

Is there anything better about this version? Or is it just for people who want to try the 'alpha version'?

It is indeed a shame that it is not finished, and I question why "public beta" releases given the recent state of similar things the Amagami translation is absolutely cursed and I feel sorry for whoever had a hand in making that disaster possible. Though I am not affiliated with the GBC project in any way or form, it would be nice to see a public release of the tools that the romhacker used to get this far. That way, anyone who wants to take a crack at it can finish it. That was how the GBA version was able to be completed, after all.
>Clyde/Tomato posted his tools online after giving up on the project, having done around 5% of the dialogues
>After I picked up the project and presented a working script to an interested romhacker, the project was made public and all tools available/open source while continuing to work on it
>>9146560
In my opinion, it's mainly of interest to curious parties who want to see what it could have been before the move to the GBA. Tomato Adventure is already like that anyway for people who want to see the progression from TA to M&LRPG. It's a golden example of how to refine a decent 6-7/10 idea and turn it into a solid 10/10. Alphadream really learned from every good thing they did, AND every mistake in Tomato Adventure.
Now, what would really get my attention would be advances on the romhacking end of pic related, as I've got a very rough draft of everything in the game already TL'd out. But figuring out how to adapt Kotobattle's entire game to the English language itself without putting in a disclaimer that
>Elementary Japanese Kanji knowledge is required to play this game
is a challenge I don't want to have to think about for a long time.

Also he arrogantly put his name in place of the subtitle on the title screen, which is gay. Many such cases, I know.

i don't understand how these projects are always filled with so much drama. just work on what you want, how you want, and post all your work publicly so other people can correct what they don't like or finish what you don't

Exactly. Not like they own anything they're working on, anyway. The entitlement and constant credit-seeking is vain and gay.

I think I lost your discord account name lmao (we talked before), but I have been making progress on it. I was as surprised as you were with the surprise release, I thought you just gave up. Some nasty flu kept me from doing anything too brain intensive.

The value is hardcoded, there's one for kanji (0C) and one for normal kana (08). The intro text uses different routines. Haven't touched the battle screens at all.

More screens.

For those out of the loop, same one who did the story font fix for the GBA version (although Unknown took care of the battle text font, and my solution was buggy and removed the gradients)

I'm not sure the fix is that worthwhile. The original length limit for the story text lines is something like 18 characters that are 8 pixel wide (less with kanji) and that becomes 24 characters that are 6 pixel wide. You're still dealing with restrictions reminiscent of old 16-bit jrpg translations.

So after a brief look over this patch, and after talking it over with some interested parties, here's what I know:
>one of my contacts did INDEED asm together a workable font mod and, while not a VWF, is a worthy compromise that buys extra characters per line via a 6px wide font rather than the ugly 8px wide one in the current patch (see image: left vs image: right)
>the cuts made to the script are severe, to the extent that it is largely devoid of personality, and at worst nearly reads like an MTL
While efforts appear to have been made here to do SOMETHING, I'm sort of surprised that RHDN approved this patch at all in its current state.
I have my hands full with other projects for the time being so I'm not saying I'll be the one to do anything with this, but what I can say is that in order to do this right, and to make a release worthy of an Alphadream title... a lot of work needs to be done.

>> No.9151646

>>9151378
Judging by the creators posts it seems like this was their first hack. I doubt there would be any tools they made for this since they stated they basically plugged in the script as they went along. It’s playable and I’m able to understand the basic story. But it would be cool it see a release with more polish in the future.

Their quality control has gone down the drain the past few years. That's why I'm not releasing the patch for my project until I'm completely satisfied. It's been hovering somewhere over 90% finished for a while as I Iack sufficient free time, but dammit, I didn't grow up in this awful era where it's acceptable to release totally incomplete products with little guarantee of "updating" it later. Not gonna name names, but someone did regrettably beat me with a "first!" patch that made front page, and it was a total proof-of-concept that, no exagerration, doesn't even have 1% of earnest effort and research put into it. The author was at least cool about it and knew he was getting in over his head, but seriously, why bother being the "first!" guy if you know it's embarassing?

When fanfiction fecal matter like Chrono Trigger Plus get rave reviews, you know the RHDN crowd are easily pleased and have no taste, so this isn't surprising to me in the least.
