THPS1 feels much different to play, and it has a charm alien to the rest if the series. No manuals means you need to get creative with your combos or get good since big combos arent piss easy. In any case you could argue the soundtrack and the levels are exclusive since none of it returns in THPS2. The levels are decently skippable, but listen to the soundtrack.

Also don't put a space between the world and the question mark, you look retarded.

1 and 2 play uniquely and are exactly how a sequel should be. It improved on everything and didn't go backwards at any point. I had both games and would switch between them because of how differently they play and how great they are. The warehouse level and the Mall level in THPS1 are great

There's content exclusive to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2X on Xbox at least - I don't like its UI as much as regular THPS2, it has that too-clean UI which many original Xbox games had, but it does include every single level from the first 2 games and some exclusive ones. Emulates well in both Cxbx-Reloaded and Xemu.

Underground 1 is an earnest adventure of rags to riches with your best friend, it introduces a lot of cool game mechanics to play around with. Underground 2 aped the then at the time popular series Jackass, with Bam and his cohorts like Johnny acting like clowns and doing dangerous silly shit. there's a big focus on some really asinine elements, playing as cameo characters who cannot skate to do some ludicrous thing for a joke.
all the game mechanics are the same as the first one, the story is dumb.
i say play THUG Pro, and or THUG 2 Remix, the former is a fan made package where THUG 2 is used as the base to play all the maps from the entire THPS series, with online multiplayer to boot. the latter is the PSP port of THUG 2 and includes an additional 2 levels, and during the story you get to choose which level you want to go to next.

9129675

THPS1 is more experimental
They were learning to make the game
It's got the downhill maps
Maps are weirder in general
There are less obvious lines to skate on and no manuals so you play it differently
There are extra points icons to get mid air instead of gaps
You have to learn the skater's specials like a fighting game special (so you can't just customize to an easy left-right or up-down)
Soundtrack is better and there are videos of the songs
You should play all so start with the first
The perfect combination of inovation, technical prowess, AAA polish, and cultural zeitgeist that'll never happen again
It's older so it's further away from our cursed days and closer to the happy times
Activision gave THPS to cheaper studios and made Neversoft work on plastic guitar toys and milked the fad dry then killed the studio

Its story was absolutely fucking stupid as well. I can understand people not liking THUG2's story but THAW's was infinitely worse.

>> No.9133042

I really liked American Wasteland but I jumped from PS1 straight to AW and only played Underground later so if you played all of them by AW you had severe Tony Hawk fatigue. Plus the story is so much better than UG2, that Jackass connection was pure bullshit, all those pros and they put fucking Bam Margera in the spotlight, MTV trash game. It was so bad I never played UG1 to this day. AW's story is just absurd but never unbearable.

In that case you've missed out big time, THUG is great. Nothing like THUG2.

You should try Underground 1. It doesn't have the retarded humor and it's a much more interesting and fun 'shitty skating in your backyard all the way to becoming a huge pro' story.

The reason why I felt as though 4 is a downgrade from 3 is because of how slow the singleplayer is in comparison. There still is fun to be had in 4 though. Underground took what 4 was doing but improved upon it. I prefer THUG2 to both of those because the singleplayer objectives are fast paced like they were in earlier games. On top of that, you get a classic mode that is more of the old formula. I enjoy trying to complete the story mode of THUG2 as quickly as I can.

>> No.9135176

Even as a Dreamcast fag, I can confirm that it's better to play the original PS1 versions of 1 and 2 for the better controller alone.

1 and 2: PS1
3, 4, and THUG: PS2 or Xbox
THUG2: PS2 or Xbox for console, PSP for extra levels, PC for THUGpro
THAW: PS2 (collector's edition version. The greatest hits version has the bonus content from the CE as well)
The PS2 versions of 3 to THAW are the original versions, however 3 has an extra level and character on Xbox (they arent anything special though) and all of the Tony Hawk games on Xbox allow you to use a custom soundtrack from ripping CDs to your Xbox. PS2 controller is better for Tony Hawk imo, so it's what you prefer in that case.

I like the 5th gen versions of 3 and 4 more than the 6th gen. I feel like the engine is too fast and the movement is less predictable on 6th gen.
Regardless, you should play 3 and 4 on 5th gen too because they're completely different games and fun.

I also enjoy 1,2 and 3 on N64 more than on PS1, it's smoother and look better, despite the incomplete soundtrack and no videos. I recommend the PS1 version first for the complete experience and for consistency of playing all 4 on the same platform, but now that I've seen it all I choose the N64 to play casually more often. I never played the Dreamcast ports, I bought the games by mail and by the time they arrived my old Dreamcast had died lol

I also like the DS games that look like 5th gen demakes

I had lots of fun with the GBA ports too, the perspective make it an extra challenge, they are very repetitive with lots of padding but the good stuff is there, they play great, still wouldn't really recommend unless you played them all and want more.

>>9128585
>>9129007
THUG1 had a much better story but THUG2 was a more fun game.

the main problem with the story in THUG2 was how linear it was. you never got to choose your team or recruit teammates, getting all the goals in a level didn't matter because bam's team would always be ahead of you until you clutch it for your team at the end and the penalties were always the same (lose bob, swap teams, the equalizer).

it also doesn't help that it's a really short story. you can clear through the game and 100% every goal in an afternoon.

>all the tony hawk games are better ports than the ps1 versions
I disagree. The N64 ports were pretty good for what they were, but limited cart space and the controller hampered the experience of each successive game. THPS1 is the best because it is the smallest in file size and has the simplest technique. It could be fit onto a cart with less sacrifices made and had gameplay that fit the N64 controller well. 2 and especially 3 added a lot more content and techniques that made it too heavy-handed for the N64.
That said it would be interesting to see how good a port of THPS2 or 3 to N64 could be if was on a bigger cart and fully optimized the hardware.

>> No.9137510

>>9137224
The game itself is like 2% of the CD, everything else is music and videos
The cartridge hampered nothing in terms of gameplay
In the old days we would download ripped PSX CD's from the internet because full ISOs were too big and they were about the size of a N64 ROM
The D-pad is better on N64 too, for specials and manuals, and the C-buttons work just as intended. I don't get it.
Maybe 4 would be hampered very slightly by the controller because of the acid drop but it wasn't ported (and works fine on gamecube where there are two shoulder buttons too)

The first two games play better on PS1 and Dreamcast and their controllers are a lot more fitting. Edge of Reality's ports are ambitious but not as good as Neversoft's original or Treyarch's ports. I would say that the music does make a big gameplay experience because the 64 ports have few songs, they are cut to pieces, and loop heavily.
If all you had in 2002 was an N64 and you didn't mind spending a lot more money for games that had lot of content cut out of them then sure, it was an ok choice, but it was still the worst choice compared to any console that the Tony Hawk games came out on.

The framerate is better on N64 than PS1, the graphics are smoother, the view distance is better and you can use the RAM expansion for High-res, at the expense of truncated music. Plus the multiplayer runs smoother too.
The framerate alone makes it play better on N64.

The graphics look cleaner on 64 compared to PS1 but the limited draw distance is a lot more noticeable because it looks radioactive half the time and all the models are pulled straight from the PS1 games and look like they could have been a lot more detailed. If you played any of the other ports first and got the full soundtrack, playing the N64 games felt like a massive downgrade.
Playing THPS games on an N64 controller is a little better than playing them with a Gamecube controller, but any other controller is 10x better.
