I never would have imagined it would be possible to take modern FPS features (such as Halo-style regenerating armor) and seamlessly fit them into a balls-to-the-wall 90's FPS; successfully proving that these features can easily produce a fun-yet-challenging experience, and that today's developers have absolutely no excuse for nerfing gameplay just to allow said features in the game.

The first game was decent. I've never really been a fan of the campaign but the multiplayer was pretty cool.

Halo was one of the few games that actually got regeneration right. It was a cool feature before all the game developers started poorly slapping it in their games not unlike those imitation candy makers from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Now it's become a mark of shame. Nothing more than a recurring indicator of casual gameplay and yet another example of how little developers actually care about their creations nowadays.

It took Crysis and made it fun to play. You're more powerful but the demons are faster and have more abilities, so it evens out somewhat.

In my opinion, Thy Flesh Consumed is much easier, Plutonia is harder, and most of Sunder is easier while some levels are near-impossible with a pistol start.

Though the regenerating shield is a mixed bag. It's a fun concept with the significant lack of healing items, but it can slow the game down.

Brutal Doom's seven rockets is nothing compared to Project MSX's two punches.

9/10 mod. It's not really Doom anymore but it's still a good time.

I think it did a lot of things better than other shooters at the time. The AI was more noticeably different, and there was a definite strategy to combat. But the repetition in the levels and the fucking shit flood part of the game killed it for me. Halo 2 was a lot more fun in my opinion. The first one got boring before I felt like finishing it.

The original was different enough that it was really good. 2 refined that. Games these days don't even try to be different.

TFC has a severe lack of healing and noticeable lack of ammo in vanilla. MSX made it easier by countering this with the ridiculously powerful melee and more importantly the regenerating shield. Hit-and-run isn't very Doom, but it's exactly why it wasn't as hard as usual.

Keep in mind that /vr/ is probably right when they say the first half of TFC is harder than the second. The first three levels got progressively more frustrating, then after E4M3 I don't remember dying.

I don't believe it is all that great. Its basically Call Of Duty with a tad of Halo and Crysis on the Doom engine. 2tac4me. Ammo runs out quickly and is very scarce, charging grenades and throwing them blow up too large for small corridor like levels (a good percent of vanilla levels), and can instakill you from considerable distances even in open areas; the weapons weren't too pleasing either, the game can get awfully laggy, but this is likely an issue on my end; no multiplayer (although, I wouldn't want to play it on multiplayer due to the prementioned issue), jumping even higher breaks maps more than ever, shields which lead you to cowering behind cover turning the game into a crawl, etc.. There are many things to like about the modification as well, I especially like the new AI, but nothing that makes me want to play it again.

Overall, it just doesn't feel like Doom, and also doesn't feel too fun or satisfying. After I tried it for the first time, I am left to think that many say it is better than Brutal Doom simply because they don't want to like Brutal Doom.

>> No.908568

I don't like either, personally. I find almost all game-play changing mods mess with almost all DOOM compat. maps. Brutal DOOM is turd and I honestly feel MSX isn't much better.
One thing that annoys me in both, is because there's gore, blood clouds and explosions and all the shitty trails which follow projectiles makes it hard to see a lot. It doesn't look cool or fancy in my opinion.

Not really if you don't suck.

I don't think there was ever a point in my run of the first game where I had to halt my gameplay anymore than I do without using Project MSX. In fact, I was actually speeding through the game a lot quicker (and not because I could abuse the jumping system).

Like I said earlier, I think the modern FPS mechanisms scare off a lot of people far too quickly.

I mean like...
>Its basically Call Of Duty with a tad of Halo and Crysis on the Doom engine
how do you say this?

Aside from the regenerating armor (which, I should point out, is not the same as COD's infamous regenerating health system), I'm not seeing any other similarity.

>> No.908602

>>908584
>not really if you don't suck.
Their different AI is something to get used to and is often tedious because they can hide somewhat far distances away and then run back and unload when you least expect it. When I played it (which I played nearly the whole first episode of Doom 2 before jumping to conclusions), about 10-14 shots make your shields dissipate(which they fire quicker, and many enemies now have machineguns), and health runs out much quicker because of the shields presence to balance the game. If you do not go for cover, then you may die, which is a higher possibility due to this, making going for cover something to consider.

>how do you say this?
Aiming through ironsights, reloading, enemies that hide behind cover, sprinting, screen effects when shot, melee with weapon, throwing grenades, other minor details, but other than that, I just base my claim on the way the game feels. It just feels like Call Of Duty.

You're able to use the stim packs and armor boosters you pick up. These can be rather useful when getting shot at and pose as nice alternative to hiding behind cover like a pussy.
>Aiming through ironsights
There is a total of one weapon that actually has iron sights. The rest you fire from the "hip", just like the original Doom weapons.
>sprinting
This is a feature that Doom has had since day one.

How many shooters have you actually played before?

Actually, a better question to ask is why these bother you so much. If Call of Duty didn't exist, I bet you wouldn't even care about a game having reloading or grenades. I mean, I hate Call of Duty as much as the next guy, but I think you hate it for all the wrong reasons.

>You're able to use the stim packs and armor boosters you pick up.
Using stimpacks and armor boosters further complicates a game I enjoy for its simplicity.

>There is a total of one weapon that actually has iron sights. The rest you fire from the "hip", just like the original Doom weapons.
I never gave you an implication of how significant of an impact aiming was on the game, you simply asked for a reminiscent feature. Hip fire accuracy plummeted in the modification, I wouldn't consider it entirely "just like the original Doom weapons".

>This is a feature that Doom has had since day one.
Exhaustion from sprinting wasn't implemented, if I recall correctly. Sprinting didn't restrict your ability to fire or strafe as effectively in vanilla.

>How many shooters have you actually played before?
Over 100, not that this relates to anything.

Who are you to tell me how significant any of those changes are to me? They bother me, because I simply never came to enjoy those features.

This. The entire point was to use features from today's shooters and carefully implement them into a fast-paced 90's shooter. The player must now learn to think strategically and efficiently, while still being required to focus on ripping and tearing if he/she doesn't want to spend an hour on a single map.

It's about balance. It maintains this equilibrium between strategy and blunt challenge. I don't see it as just a mod to make Doom more tactical. I see it as a perfect collision between two completely different FPS styles that just happened to occur within the Doom engine because, let's face it, it's convenient.

It doesn't FEEL like Doom because, at least in my opinion, it isn't inherently supposed to BE Doom. It's something much different. Sure it's a little rough around the edges. I'm not saying it's perfect, nor am I trying to convince you that it is. But is it so hard to at least respect the concept behind this whole project?

>Ammo runs out quickly and is very scarce
I can usually reach and maintain full ammo within a couple of levels. Use melee more often, you'd be surprised how many kills a fully-charged punch can yield.
>charging grenades and throwing them blow up too large for small corridor like levels (a good percent of vanilla levels)
Again, if it's a small corridor use your fists instead of grenades. A fully-charged punch is strong enough to take down a cyberdemon in two hits, and the charge level prior to that is enough to instakill a baron without draining your shield. Ordinary punches can take down most weaker enemies in 1-3 hits as well.
>the weapons weren't too pleasing either
Matter of opinion. I find all the weapons other than the auto-shotgun very satisfying, especially the nailshotgun and autocannon. Nothing quite like gibbing three pinkies with one nailshot.
>the game can get awfully laggy
As a longtime resident of Toaster Town I feel you on this one, but usually it takes a massive crowd of enemies being blown up to cut into my framerate much. Try turning off dynamic lights.
>no multiplayer
Contrary to popular belief, GZDoom does have multiplayer. It's not very stable, but it's there.
>jumping even higher breaks maps more than ever
So don't jump. If you don't want to break maps by jumping, don't hit the jump key. And why would you care about other people jumping? As you said, there's no multiplayer, so what's it matter if someone else wants to play maps they've beaten vanilla 20 times over a little differently the 21st time?
>shields which lead you to cowering behind cover turning the game into a crawl
By default, the shield absorbs 200 points of damage. With the overshield, it can take 600. If you ever manage to take that much damage, despite all the defensive options available, you should probably try a different difficulty level. Or, you know, get gud.

Maybe I need a new term, but there's a rather important semantic distinction as I use the term. Playing the *game* ironman means (to me at least) that when you die it's game over or restart from the beginning. Playing *levels* ironman means that you must restart the level or game over if you die before you finish it. IE autosaves only, no quicksaves or hardsaves midway through a level

Ugh, the map design isn't too bad (but its not really good), but the textures used are fucking horrible.

I remember there was this huge-ass pk3 for ZDoom a few years ago that was a big school mod. Had a couple different maps, all custom weapons (I remember a flamethrower being one of them, not the Torment and Torture one). All of the teachers and security guards spoke some different language.
The maps were really detailed and there were even psuedo room-over-room effects to give the illusion of multiple floors. No, this wasn't Grezzo.

Anybody know?

Plus I don't see the point in following someone's "original content do not steal" clause when they created the content using sprites from an open source commercial game as a base, for use as a mod for a player-made open source sourceport when I intend to use it for another free mod for the same game.

Also simply by having the chaos god symbols in the /tg/ map it's already borked as far as permissions are concerned since GW disallows any and all unlicensed content, fullstop, including terms like "space marine."

And then I noticed that the doors at the beginning and end of the level had some weird shit going on with the textures. It was slid halfway to the side, so that half of the switch was on one side and half was on the other. I attempted to move the door, but it happened again. I deleted it and remade it entirely. Same thing. I added a different corridor between the rooms with different doors. The textures still wouldn't align. You shoot something like a wall, and move out of cover as the BFG explodes, the way it works is the tracers hit monsters in your cone of vision (that's why if you shoot a BFG into a room there's always one monster and it's behind the door or something)

Any of you guys still use soundfonts for MIDI in Doom? If so, what do you use?

I generally use GeneralUser GS, which is generally a nice, well-balanced, compact soundfont for pretty much any MIDI that isn't Yamaha XG optimised.

I also tend to switch between Arachno Soundfont and SGM-v.2.01.

Right now, I'm testing out this hugeass one called Evanescence 2 GM/GS (2GB), seems really good especially with the choir ahhs, organs, and clean guitars. At the end of that pathway is a teleport which takes you to the caged platform where a chaingunner was, it doesn't really have much of an impact on very much, but it's an alright touch.

Sorry I didn't screencap anything. The map I played was called 'Fort Diablo' or fortdblo.wad, it wasn't so bad. 1997 wad that some comments called 'dated' but it's still okay. I like some of the attempts at creating rooms or other environments, but think it's not very cohesive and doesn't really 'wow' with it's overall organization. You feel more inclined to run from the tougher fights, meaning you end up stock-piling power weapons and just picking off zombies with shotty and chaingun.

And that's pretty much how the rest of the wad is.
it's detailed, but cluttered, and at times it looks downright disgusting, but it has a few nice little quirks here and there in its design. The pacing leaves something to be desired greatly, making neither rhyme nor reason, and the enemy encounters are all very much predictable, and don't require too much thought. The ammo is distributed nicely, giving you just enough to kill everything, at least complimenting the pacing, somewhat. It's a 7/10, not really too special, but considering when it was made, it's not that bad, and aside from a few glaring errors, it's executed rather well.

Well, it wasn't a bad map by any stretch of the imagination. Not especially good, but I don't think it deserves the two-star rating. It's worth at least three, given its time period. There's an annoying part near the beginning involving a hidden chaingunner. The locked doors aren't marked and in some cases don't even look like doors at all. It's too generous with ammo and there's too few enemies, but it's overall not bad.

>> No.921978

Alright so I tried something out. Does anybody have experience with the Beautiful Doom Wads?
As said earlier, I was having framerate issues, I'm using Beautiful Doom Monsters, Russian Overkill, and Doom 2 Reloaded as my wads. When I hit a particular button in the level, the game framerate steadily drops to the point of being entirely unplayable.

So what I decided to try was playing doom 2 reloaded vanilla, no clipped over to the switch, hit it, no problem. Then I added russian overkill, no problem, then I removed russian overkill, and added beautiful doom monsters, I hit the switch, and the framerate dropped. As far as I can tell it's beautiful doom causing me all the issues. I have no idea why it'd do this though, all it does is add more blood and changes up the sprites a bit.

It does it very inefficiently, and also each blood and bit of a zombie is an entity.

Too many entities lag any computer.

Look at NUTS before you fire.
Look at NUTS after every enemy is aware.

I get the no mouse look as older games always have had an aversion to it, that one is more of a personal preference. However I don't understand the auto aim, I just don't find it to be as fun if I know all my shots connect if I just look in the direction of the enemy and fire. Maybe I just have bad taste, in fact I probably do, but I just don't find much enjoyment in that.

Well sorry about being a no taste plebeian in your other wise good thread. I guess I will just stick to my own brand of fast movement with aim shooters.

Well, BD got popular from those two single things back in the day.

Nashgore and Doom Enhanced existed back in the day, but none of them were focused on showcasing massive amounts of blood.

Now, the fatalities really did the job in helping the mod getting big. That was a new one that nobody thought on making

Also, it helped that somehow, people recognize Doom more for that infamous comic more than the game itself, so the fact that you can pretty much emulate Comic Doomguy while playing BD drove all the people towards Mark's mod
