There's a lot of things wrong with it, but I love it anyway.

I didn't think it was too bad. Sure there were bugs and bs'ness here and there but I thought it was pretty good

Aside from the ridiculously long missions, I quite enjoyed TFTD as well.

My favorite is the original though, here's hoping some good mods pop out for OpenXcom ^_^

If you're ready to be raped and pillaged, and hopefully learn and re-take earth and more, then the first, X-com UFO Defense, if you're casual as fuck, play X-Com Enemy Unknown (not to be confused with UFO Defense's European name, Unknown Enemy).

If you choose the later, you'll never know how fun it is to send tons of rookies to their deaths with stun rods, and the true horror that is picture related. You will never feel excited as your units grow and continue to not die through missions, and you won't be as easily tempted to ragequit if your powerful unit does die.

The key fault of the modern remake is that it simply lacks depth.

Projectiles no longer have trajectories, real cover has been replaced with a modifier to a dice roll, the elimination of dynamic entry, smalltime squad tactics, superhuman rambo soldiers, etc etc...

And then there is the unforgivable removal of HE.

The only way I made it bearable was a squad of 6 heavies all with splitter rockets and regular rockets.

It's not the same, but it gets a quick fix of explosives for such a weak game.

What is more exciting? Picture related, or some animation that either does damage or says "miss". Nothing is more aggravating than not having actual live projectiles, even seeing the misses fly in places they shouldn't (either into enemies you didn't target or a chair) is better than a SEEDED dice roll that triggers a long animation followed by Hit or Miss

Like the guy above you, I'm gonna say to go with the first. Read the manual, keep a good supply of large rockets, grenades, electro-flares and when you unlock them, med kits. The biggest thing to be aware of is reaction fire: soldiers and aliens who haven't spent all their time units can do snap shots if they see a hostile during their turn, This means it's best to spot with one guy, then snipe at the enemy with the other 13 guys that the target can't see.

TFTD is basically an uberhard map pack filled with changes designed to make your life more unpleasant, primarily as a result of a bug where the the original would revert to easy mode whenever you saved or finished a mission.

Apocalypse builds on what you learned in the first two, so it's best to play them first.

Interceptor and Enforcer never fucking happened.

Aside from the new 2K joint, Julian Gollop lead the team that made Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow War for the 3DS. It's simplified in some ways, like not having trajectories, and has class abilities that can break the game if you put your mind to it, but it's a very fun, highly structured, tactical puzzle game that could help ease you in to the chaos that is X-Com.

Trajectories are the shit. I set bullet speed down to the minimum so I can fully appreciate them snaking across the screen.

Gotta love explosives. If you can still recognise the map, you ain't done with it yet.

I'm wanting to play XCOM Ufo Defense and I was wondering if it's worth the 2.50 for getting it on Steam

>> No.914828

>>914730

Hell fucking yes, nigga, Steam tells me I've played it for 150 hours or so, and that's seriously lowballing it. You can also pirate it, or try the original demo, if you know how to get it running in DOSbox:

http://www.strategycore.co.uk/databank/games/ufo-enemy-unknown/demo/

If you're getting it on Steam, I'd grab the bundle that includes TFTD and Apocalypse. It also includes Interceptor and Enforcer, which are more historical curiosities.

On tonight's episode of The A-Team...

The A-Team gets pinned behind a building by X-Com.

The bullets weren't expected to be that devastating, and a getaway may not be possible. And now back to Part 2 of our show.

How are people's games going? In my game I've got a mixed bag.

Psionics is up and running and I have about a dozen psychonauts with above 85 psi strength, and even a couple of 100s. They're skilling up by panicking and mind controlling Sectoids and Mutons. I've got an Avenger built and all tactically relevant research. I have a base adjacent to a Sectoid base so I can hope over and loot their supply ships, which is hilariously easy if you use a blaster launcher to blow a hole in the ceiling of the bridge and then blow the bridge itself. No psi-attacks if you do it quickly, and the lower ranks will start panicking, dropping their weapons and killing each other.

All in all, victory is all but inevitable, providing nothing utterly horrific happens.

So... I've been shooting down Ethereal scouts on Infiltration and Retaliation missions for the last month.
The Infiltration operation just sent a Terror Ship, which I've shot down and am about to engage, but they seem pretty determined. Ah, well, it's endgame so funding isn't that high a priority.
The Retaliation operation just went from sending scouts to scout out my main base, to sending Battleships to scout that I have no hope of shooting down, so Base Defence is probably imminent. My main base is a fucking mess, just the standard starting layout that I've dumped something onto almost every square of. I'm currently juggling items between my bases to try to make sure blaster launchers spawn. If not, I'm stuck with laser rifles, heavy lasers and rawket lawnchairs. Wish me luck.

XCOM-UFO Defense is so in depth. Where can I go to get good information on how to play the game correctly? I don't want to just run in blindly.

Steam has the manual available for download, too. Be careful looking on the wiki, knowing too much will spoil all the cool surprises.

One thing to note, the stat-up system is basically learn by doing. You get better firing accuracy by hitting things, better reactions by reaction firing, stuff like that. Health, strength and such level up if you've levelled up something else.

>> No.915385

TFTD had the nice feature where you can open a door without going through it. Didn't always work for line of sight, however, but was okay most of the time.

The big downside was too many early game weapons that couldn't be used on land (except for reaction fire). Oh, and Gauss needing mags.

>> No.915398

Welp, time to TFTD. Never beat it, but I still play UFO Defense semi-regularly.

So I just started playing UFO: Enemy Unknown and I just lost my first battle. Is it okay to reload to the state before the battle, or should I take the loss as is? And am I obligated to help every city that's under attack?

>> No.916108

>>912696
This. It could have been so much more, but it was still amazing.

>> No.916123

>>916094
Take the loss as is, your soldiers gave their life for you, you must repay them by getting stronger and better, you win some you lose some (or more)

You're not obligated to help everybody, but your funding depends on it. Countries that don't see a lot of your presence will lower their funding.

>> No.916125

>>916094
I'll be honest, it will be hard for you to win if you lost your first battle/skyranger. By the time you replace it several nations will probably have pulled out.

If you don't help cities under attack you get a whopping -5000 points to your score, which basically makes that country hate you forever.

Savestate abuse is actually a pretty ok thing to do I think, at least when learning how to play. The game is hard enough without not knowing what you're doing.

>> No.916880

>>916094

Yes, but try not to make a habit of it. Get into the habit of saving before battle(i.e. before the Skyranger gets to the UFO and you get asked if you want to land). Saving before means the layout is randomised every time so you can't rely on where you know aliens are. It also means that if you're using Open X-Com and it crashes you're not inadvertently getting an advantage.

To be honest, it's a singleplayer game. Be as much of a cheater as you like, just don't brag about winning if you you savescummed.

Care to give us a rundown of the battle? Loadout, how many guys you brought, whether it was day or night, what situations you were getting killed in(did you misfire a rocket? Did that my first time.). We can probably give you a little help.
