What do you think about SMB2?

>> No.9120928

It's a great game, they made a smart decision to romhack Doki Doki Panic for the west instead of localizing the real SMB 2.

>Years later I find out that it's not a real Mario game, and actually a reused Japanese game not made by Miyamoto
>The real Mario 2 was considered too hard for people outside of Japan
>Start crying and feel betrayed

Why would Nintendo do this to us? Why lie about the truth? It's not a real Mario game and I don't like it.

>It's not a real Mario game
Didn't Doki Doki start as a Mario prototype that got repurposed? This game is weird it's essentially a romhack of a romhack of a mario game.

>feel betrayed
I don't get this complain, Nintendo retroactively made it a real Mario by integrating everything into the canon as early as with Mario All-Stars, would you have preferred to get the original japanese SMB2? Even Nintendo relegated it into the DLC category rebranding it as lost levels.

>> No.9121021

Great game. At the time, there were only two other Mario games (and the first one, Mario Brothers, was quite different from the second, Super Mario Brothers), so it didn't feel out of place. But all the Mario games that came after follow the second game more closely, so in retrospect, it doesn't feel much like a Mario game.

best of the NES trilogy. picking up and throwing things just feels so good, especially when you bonk one enemy and the projectile keeps going onto another enemy and bonks them too. Characters had different stats and could do things better than others, encouraging variation in playthroughs, and the worlds were imaginative and interesting. Ideas like using a birdo egg to actually continue the level or ride a bird backwards have never been tried again, and thus 2 is the most imaginative in the series. looking for subcons to find mushrooms or warp pipes is really fun too, because theyre genuinely well hidden and incentize a hidden extra mechanic of trying to get every mushroom in every level. One is located on top of a castle, or makes you do a secret jump above the screen to open up a shaft for a mushroom to fall down

theres ALSO the hidden mechanic of farming kills so you can make a heart flow up to restore health when needed

As far as I know, Doki Doki Panic never started off as a Mario game. As I understand it, it began development as its own thing, and, like Kid Icarus, the tech demos were built around going upwards. And this makes sense to me because there was only 1 Super Mario Bros game at the time, and there probably wasn't a desire to make thousands of them in the same way as today, especially since it was made by another dev team in Nintendo.

Brilliant, high quality NES game with great variety (augmented by a character select). Quality and effort aside, I also think it's the start of a series of decisions to always mix things up as much as they can, even when they clearly do not have to. They had a ready product that they shelved instead, and they went with the unique different game. There isn't a mainline Mario game afterward that tries to be an enhanced version of the prior, even Galaxy 2 tries its hardest to focus on its new gimmicks.

But I always get almost psychically ill by frustration, hate and disgust a few levels in. I finally tortured myself and finished the game few weeks back. Will never touch it again. This is strangely the only game thats given me this reaction.

It's something about the control and level layout that just put me off. And I'm used to bad control so it can't be that. Like I also finished Taz on Mega Drive on hard this summer and even that was a more pleasurable experience

anon was right. 2 is difficult game. even back in the 1980s, people had very little time for nintendo's game mechanics of dying a billion times just to remember the layout of a level, that's designed to take as many lives as possible. in fact, nobody ever gave a fucking shit about 2 until last recent decades. not sure why. zoomies will latch onto any cancer and then claim it was "popular", except they weren't born in the 1980s. they were born into a dead generation that grew up with minecraft and are still playing minecraft going into adulthood.

What is difficult or frustrating about Mario 2? I find it well designed with a nice difficulty curve, it does an excellent job at teaching you the mechanics then expanding on them and it doesn't really have parts designed solely to eat through lives. Add to that that you have multiple characters to chose from and up to 4 HP points if you have trouble with something. The only annoying part is the slot machine for lives, that shit can be infuriating the first time when you haven't realized there's a trick to it.

Mario 3 by comparison is much harder much earlier, it starts throwing shit at you as soon as world 2 and goes all out on world 7, and don't even get me started on world 8, it feels like a collection of Mario Maker troll levels. Plus it has this really weird and frustrating thing where if you have the correct power up it's a breeze but if you have to play as small Mario some levels are borderline impossible and can take 20 attempts.

some are very long, but it also has no shortage of very short stages too. not much thought was put into the design of it all. some levels look and feel like filler content.

>>9128009
>and it doesn't really have parts designed solely to eat through lives
most of the later worlds are like this. if you don't remember the layouts, enemy encounters, know where the secret doors are for power ups etc. then you're fucked.

> The only annoying part is the slot machine for lives
it's utterly ridiculous. mini games are the lowest form of entertainment and filler content imaginable. ran out of ideas and have plenty of rom space free? fill it up with garbage mini games, and make sure the player can't skip them or back out of them, just to rub salt into the wounds.

>Mario 3 by comparison is much harder much earlier
it's a lot more forgiving and not out to rape you for lives. you can build up many lives easily and then proceed through the difficult parts
