I want to create Drunk effects in my mod. I have several questions and none of them are "how to do this" I want to really sit down and learn scripting instead of just patching shit together by looking at other mods which is what I've done in the past.

1.Should I use Zscript or ACS? Every bit of conventional wisdom seems to suggest creating a custom powerup with Zscript, but since Zscript is not compiled doesn't that make it slower? I'm more familiar with Zscript as I've built a few custom weapons, enemies and props with it

2.What's a good way to set up a working dev environment to develop and test shit like this? So far I've been using slade for everything but I'm probably going to migrate to using a source folder open in VSCode, having a command line command to bounce everything to a PK3 then test my code, but what about debugging? GZDooms console is pretty limited from what I've read in the docs. I'm interested in how people here set up their basic dev environment.

I'm thinking about how to render enemies. Using hardware sprites would be nice, but you have a hard limit of 80, and you have clipping to deal with. I know bloodshot uses sprites for the enemies though, so it's doable.

Once I have enemies in, there'll be some gameplay. Then I'll switch back to fixing the map editor and make some big maps.

I don't see how it would significantly matter unless you're making a big/intensive mod.
Like I would personally just pick whichever looks easiest to develop then decide if it's worth using the other to get more "speed" if necessary

Doom players have a pretty high tolerance for bullshit, so I wouldn't sweat savescumming your own map too much. There's also nothing wrong with making maps that cater to lesser-skilled players. Not everything needs to be Sunder or Sunlust.

It depends. Are you having trouble with single viles? Then you should maybe git guder. Can't punchout revs or two-shot dance cyberdemons? Fuck 'em, do your thing.
If someone complains your map is too easy and that you should put an additional thousand revenants in there, tell them to go fuck themselves.
I generally make my maps just hard enough so *I* can just beat them on UV. If anyone finds them too easy, it's their problem. I prefer comfy and explorative maps to nonstop carnage anyway.
Don't let yourself get pushed into the enemy count = quality direction. And to come back to my first point, even IF you're having trouble with viles - just don't put them in your map. Doom 1 had no viles, or revenants, or the ssg for that matter and still had engaging levels.

Might be the thread to ask, can somebody explain to me what the difficulty settings in Ashes actually do?

Arcade - seems like closer to classic Doom UV, plenty of ammo but some (?) enemies are more spongy (I assume this is applied where it makes sense, so stuff like basic raiders are still relatively light on HP, but some big bad mutants can take a beating).

Survival - less ammo, less HP for everything. How crippling is lack of ammo? Are there still bosses or monsters that require a lot of damage to take down.

Apocalypse - played it a bit, seems like you die in a couple of melee hits. Not sure how crippling that would be on the long run.

Also from what I understand the maps are really big, I shouldn't aim to do them without saving mid-level, correct?

Wrath of Chronos if you want Co-op RPG madness and DRLA isn't cutting it. Has like 5 classes, comes with its own enemy pack and works in doom and heretic, not just hexen.
Armed Recruit/Veteran if tossing read: blowing yourself up with grenades and sharing healthkits and spare armor is your thing.
Be sure to enable item dropping, though, not weapon dropping.
There was a CoD 4 MW mod that let you revive teammates or set respawn points with certain perks and random enemies that also used perks from that game but I haven't seen it in a decade or so I forgot what it was called.
You can't go wrong with Alpha/Delta + Armageddon Invasion for a mapset.
Play GMOTA coop. Just do it. Enable friendly fire for the definition of why axes are skill.

On that note, consider also Shotgun Frenzy and/or Stronghold. Neither of them accept weapon packs to be added ontop unless you edit them to do so but they're great on their own regardless.
Stronghold is fucking huge and although it was originally designed for single player, it still plays great in coop. Make sure you got an entire evening open if you want to get through probably half of it.
Shotgun frenzy is a bit more arcadey, and has only like 9 maps but the waves are massive, weapon upgrades get out of control, specially Shotgun and Commando weapon packs and you can pilot mechs in the harder maps if you're both gud enough. Just don't sit in the commander chair if you're just 2 players, the basebuilding maps were designed for 4 to 16+ players or so.

i've asked before but i'll ask again: does anyone do all their mapping on linux? "native" UDB (mono) was supremely janky for me, but I don't feel like installing and configuring wine. I guess it's the way to go, however. I know there's "eureka", but it's shitty compared to UDB, and of course there are all the other tools (whacked, slade, etc.)

Having played on-n-off since 2016 or so. It's partway forcing yourself to learn the systems and gitting gud at it, partway having decent enough memory to remember mechanics and tricks given to you by the manual.
That clip you're replying to was made with an LMG, i'm not surprised at all by such result because that thing is basically just a smaller vulcanette.
Everything is possible and the game gives you all the tools to deal with every situation. Treat it as a puzzle sandbox, except with a coat of tactical flair and demons. It can be as hard or as easy as you make it to be for you, just make sure to bind your controls somewhere comfortable.
Once you realize Naturist isn't the hardest loadout to bring, you'll start to understand. Just don't play Rifleman over and over and you'll get it eventually.

A cybernetic limb that you could find in backpacks would be one method to get a limb back and might have better aim stability or movement than an organic limb, though setting it in would cause a lot of pain and you have to replace it with another cybernetic limb if that ever gets badly damaged.
Another longer method would have to be setting the dismembered limb back onto your bloodied stump and injecting second blood to stitch the tissues and muscle back into place. It would take much longer for it to set back in than a cybernetic limb and you may not have as good stability with the limb while the bone is still mending together.
Blue magic would straight up regrow your limbs back if you have enough of it.

Both Ribbiks and Skillsaw are influenced by 2004-2010 slaughter wads: Scythe 2, Deus Vult 1 & 2, Kama Sutra and Speed of Doom. Difference with Ribbiks and Skillsaw is Ribbiks' Sunder influence. Similarity between them comes from other influences. Unlike Sunder, Ribbiks wads are less grindy, have shorter' more arcadey combat sequences and Ribbiks gives more ammo, so you don't have to really so much of infighting, melee and shotgunning. The heavy use of the flowing mossrock looks very good in this level and with my autistic texure alignment it really shows off how it now tiles seamlessly, together with the matching flat.

I do, it’s fun and accomplished exactly what I wanted it to. Could be that it’s just more of a preference thing, I don’t like moving my fingers off of the movement keys. It’s less of a preference thing for Hideous D with all its keybinds.
I’d also recommend rebinding your mousewheel to just two weapons instead of scrolling through them all.

Supplice managed to achieve similar results through GZDoom, though it probably helps that they get to work with the same artist as Ion Fury.
Sometimes the biggest draw about IF - being buildshit - also results in my least favorite quirks, like ion arrows acting up depending on the map. I also have to admit I wouldn’t have it any other way, there’s something special about Build game color palletes and their colored lighting.

Actually that's not (just) the UFOs. I investigated this once. Turns out it's one single sector in the middle of the map with untextured lower walls that's used to hide a monster ambush below ground and is solely responsible for fps more than dropping in half. If you edit the lines to be textured or go past the point in the map where the floor raises and merges with the surrounding one, fps improves dramatically.

Since there's seemingly nothing special about the sector compared to countless other pop-up ambushes other than it being finely circular and donut-like, I suspect the shape somehow triggers a corner case with how GZD's flat bleeding emulation algorithm breaks it into pieces of fake floor causing a stupidly large amount of extra rendering. Prboom lineage ports don't show any difference in fps even in gl mode but still render the fake floor correctly. GZ devs would probably consider this a bug, but since I never reported it despite noticing it, it's my fault that you're suffering it now.

Thanks. It was just a small area. I had a plan for the rest, but didn't get around to it. Was going to be a castle that was sorta frozen in time during an attack, so there would be exploding walls that you'd have to jump from suspended brick to brick and such.
Too ambitious and then other things came up. Was fun to play with trenchbroom though.

If only I could get realtimecsg to not hate my fucking unity project. It sorta works, but it's not nearly as fun as trenchbroom. Maybe I'll just look into doing layout in tb and importing to unity.

This map was cool, albeit a bit flat. It felt very Doom-1-y, with all those secrets and doors opening and the fireblu area like some Ep3 level, although especially the fireblu area dragged on a bit too much for my taste. It was literally just "push button, shoot a few mooks that aren't really that challenging". So in my opinion that area could have been either a little bit shorter (e.g. opening more of it at once, though it would of course ruin the star shape a bit) or putting more ammo and enemies there.
