So did anyone ever actually get in shit for this? I don't see what the harm was back then.

It's a bluff and completely false.

I like to imagine that for every law out there, no matter how benign or silly it is, that someone got fucking 800% reamed by the long arm of the law over it.

oh man, I still remember the first time I played an NES rom. I actually deleted it the next day because I was told keeping it for longer was a crime and I would get caught.

I realized this was a bluff mostly because a friend of the family came over and put all 6 original Mega Man games + Nesticle on our computer and it was a good year before I went out on my own looking for roms and saw that message.

I got Nintendo Power in the mail around that time, I remember they had a column about emulation. Someone sent them a letter asking if it was legal to have roms if you owned the game - they replied saying that backups are unnecessary and all forms of emulation are illegal regardless. Pretty ballsy in my opinion.

I wish I still had the issue.

I remember downloading ROMs during the whole Kazaa era. I had the mentality of, "as long as I don't download a shit ton all at once/constantly, they won't know/care".

Never got those messages, though. Guess the sites I pulled from didn't give any more fucks than I did. 'Course, if they HAD, they might still be around today...

>> No.909291

game revolution had a download section with emulators. some irc room i found had a bunch of roms. the adrenaline rush i felt when downloading a game i didnt own a backup copy for was something.

Meanwhile, sites like emuparadise are literally the only public archive of what is the majority of the history of videogames.

That kind of creeped me out. I kept some roms on a floppy and then copied them to the pc when I wanted to play so I could easily wipe them from the hd.

I used to delete and redownload ROMs daily.

I remember seeing that. I don't remember the exact issue, but I know that I have it somewhere in storage. It would be a bit of trouble to dig it up, but I can definitely confirm that they did that.

I own an actual Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior arcade machine that says it is illegal for use in Canada, the US or Japan every time it boots up. It had a long, full lifespan and came into my hands in 1997 at one of the big old arcade auctions they used to have here in Ohio. I assume it came from Mexico.
