Sadly it wasn't until 2006 that they eventually made a fun Yugioh game, the card pools on all before it sucked and the games were essentially "pick the things with the highest attacks and the spell and traps on the limited list"

I'm with you on this one, Forbidden Memories wasn't all that good to me... but it was probably the most memorable one they've ever made. Of course the gameplay lacks depth, it's mostly a matter of bigger numbers winning and almost nothing else, but it's still fun in its own way, and the wonderful art direction and OST both help a lot in keeping the player engaged, it also has tons of atmosphere, I recall the first time I went up against the high mages, each in their own isolated shrine, it wasn't anything over the top, it actually felt calm sometimes, just goes to show that they didn't need anything over the top to intimidate the player, which does wonders for an RPG like this. I wish Yu-Gi-Oh! video games still had as much soul as Forbidden Memories.

We just lost the real life Yugi pretty much, someone who loved all sorts of games and dedicated his life to cherishing them, due to seeing them as a source of joy for people. I'd say we should play some Yu-Gi-Oh! video games in his memory, since while a lot of them can be rough, they're all full of soul, since they're based on works by a legend. RIP.

2006 you can actually build decks with some strategy though, Magical Explosion OTK is still the most OP shit in game but you have actual variety of building things like warrior toolbox, zombies, ocean level abuse, skill drain, etc.

Most of the issue with the games before is they wasted valuable card space with worthless trash no one uses. Like over half the cards are shit no one wants or needs. 2006 added 1,000 more cards than normal and had the least amount of filler.

I believe we should keep this thread going strong today, in honor of Kazuki Takahashi, who created something so special to so many people, and sadly left us way too soon. Still, he lives on through his work, who'll carry his legacy for decades, and through the people whose lives were made more fun thanks to a man who simply loved all sorts of games people can play together. Well then, my fellow /vr/os, what's your all time favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! video game adaptation? Why do you prefer it over any of the others you might've played before? I'm personally a Forbidden Memories fan myself, because it's the one I grew up with, and it gave me everything I was looking for, beautiful aesthetics, and atmospheric OST, and immersive story, all crucial elements of an RPG, of course the rules were simplified, but for a kid like me that felt quite ideal at the time, and I've only grown more fond of it over time. I'll never forget my first few encounters with the high mages, I genuinely felt intimidated and worried, they had a strong presence and its stuck with me after all of these years.

I see your point, and I actually think you're right about the state of Yu-Gi-Oh! before and after 2006, especially regarding deck building, but I don't think that makes all of the video games released before that downright bad. I'll admit the rules were sometimes odd to get used to, and that deck building was too simple and could lack variety, but they had their merits, especially since all of them were so different thanks to how they messed with the rules. DM1 is probably the most varied with decks, it has the simplest gameplay, but it's clear they want you to build a deck around an attribute and specific type, to use equip and field spells, it's sort of like MtG's 5 colors in a way and it can be fun. I also get a kick out of DM7/TSC since it reminds me of Pokémon with how you move your character around the map, playing through Battle City's iconic story. All sequels, which followed the official rules were superior for many reasons, but the classics have their charm still.

There were literally 10 GBA games or something. The GBA is actually the ultimate YGO console.
There's games for:
>literally emulating the early days of the OCG (Eternal Duelist Soul)
>autists who mark out for Dandylion being included in a GBA game (Ultimate Masters 2006)
>let's go to Duel Academy and hang out with Alexis until Jaden walks up and challenges you to a duel (Duel Academy)
>participating in dumbass tournaments over and over and opening the shittiest packs you can think of (7 Trials to Glory)
>anime-inspired games that carry on from Dark Duel Stories instead of the OCG and do whatever the fuck they want, including letting you fucking use the Egyptian Gods (TSC, Reshef)
>literally just fucking watching the dubbed anime (GAME BOY ADVANCE, VIDEO! NOW YOU CAN WATCH ALL YOUR FAVORITE CARTOONS ON YOUR GAME BOY!)
>how about Yu-Gi-Oh! but it's Mario Party/Fortune Street?
>DUNGEON DICE MONSTERS
>totally competent if bland sims with solid balance in single player (STDD, WCT04)
Up to 2006, it has basically every type of Yu-Gi-Oh! experience you could possibly want. I am mega autistic, so the more I play the GBA games, the more unique quirks I find in each one.
As for the modern game, like everything else it has had power creep, doesn't mean it can't be fair and doesn't mean it can't have good formats with engaging gameplay. If you weren't following through the years you'll just go "jesus christ there's like 6 types of Extra Deck monsters??" without understanding at first how they each serve a particular purpose in practice and each have their various uses. Overall I don't actually play modern YGO, but while it's a totally different game from oldschool YGO, that's not really a bad thing. Really with stuff like Dueling Book people actually participate in alternative formats from all over YGO's history (not to mention the popularity of Progression formats where they go through every pack in sequence and make decks with whatever they get) YGO could be worse

>I am mega autistic, so the more I play the GBA games, the more unique quirks I find in each one.
To demonstrate here are some unique quirks to the ones I've extensively played
>Eternal Duelist Soul
A lot of the packs in this and Stairway are adapted from real OCG sets, so figure out what those are and you'll begin to appreciate the unique history of what you're experiencing. This truly is the experience of being there during the early days of the OCG, in GBA form and released in English. I think that's Cool(tm).
>Stairway
I like Fusionspamming in this game because there's support like Monster Eye and Meteor B. Dragon that didn't get released in the TCG until like 2008. Monster Eye like all monsters that were in Dark Duel Stories is based and any time you can use them in a serious context is to be celebrated. Also Metamorphosis is at THREE.
>7 Trials to Glory
You can get Acid Trap Hole very early, which is literally just worse Nobleman of Crossout, so it's crazy. That's one of those cards that's usually really hard to get (or not in the game at all)
On the negative side this game removed cards from the pool because they were sick of people using Solemn Judgment. Just fucking take it out of the game entirely that'll show them. Stein OTK is really fucking good in this game though
>Ultimate Masters 2006
I'd recommend cheating to unlock all the packs and/or all the duelists, some of the cutest packs you get at like 85% completion and that's a massive slog. UM06's single player is mid in the regard that progression isn't very fun due to cash being pretty scarce. Just ignoring the "progression" part and letting you chip away at that 100% completion however you want to is better in my opinion. You could even just fucking get all the cards and use it as a duel simulator since you can face any recipe. UM06 is the best YGO game on the system because it has the most cards and content, and for the ability to duel recipes. Too bad it doesn't have My Body as a Shield.

In case anyone's interested, the popular Yu-Gi-Oh! video games for Nintendo's portable systems, mostly GBA and DS, actually started all the way back in the original GB, and a few months ago Duel Monsters 1, which was the 1st ever video game adaptation of the card game, finally got an English translation (https://www.romhacking.net/translations/6337/).). One interesting thing about it is that this is what essentially made Konami get the license to make the OCG, due to its positive reception and high sales, before Konami it was Bandai who had the license to make real cards, and Konami even used the primitive GB rules as a basis for the OCG's original rules, it's quite an interesting piece of card game history. Also, if you decide to play this, I suggest looking it up on YugiPedia, since they have quite a lot of useful pages regarding fusions, drop rates, victory bonuses and opponent's decks too, which can help a lot in a playthrough.

I have to admit a lot of things about it haven't aged well at all, some of it can be forgiving due to it being their 1st attempt, but other choices were already poor even back then, mostly when it comes to grinding, with not only low drop rates for cards fans would want, but also some ridiculous stipulations, like having to beat a specific opponent 100 times, or duel against dozens of different players using link cables, which makes some cards quite a chore to acquire legitimately. Still, I do love this, it feels like a lite RPG based on Duelist Kingdom, which is an idea with tons of potential, which I wish Konami would attempt again, one more thing I like is how there isn't only a single viable deck like in most Yu-Gi-Oh! video games, though playing anything control here isn't a thing still, it's all about choosing an attribute and type, a theme, and then building a deck with the proper equip and field spells, which adds variety and replay value.

I had no idea this could happen, though I do recall having some issues when emulating Dark Duel Stories on VBA, but it got better when I switched over to BGB and mGBA, which are the ones I recommend nowadays, strangely enough the bug I encountered on VBA involved Blue-Eyes too, but it wasn't the opponents playing it, it was me being given one for no reason from an opponent who shouldn't drop it. I suppose the most safe bet you have if you'd really like to play this is to go over to your PC or laptop and load up something like BGB or mGBA really.

I've been getting back into my Dark Duel Stories save, in hopes of finally beating it, and it's been quite interesting, in a way it reminded me of why I played this so much, but it also reminded me of why I haven't beaten it yet. I adore so many things about it, but if there's one thing I can't stand, and that is causing me the most trouble now in the last tier (Seto, Ishizu, Heishin and Simon) before the final boss (DarkNite) is that drop rates for useful cards are too low and it's the only way you can get them. I didn't have much trouble with Heishin and SImon since both of them play decks filled with monsters of the same alignment, which makes it simple to counter, but Ishizu and Seto have decks filled with strong cards of many different alignments. I managed to beat Ishizu 5 times, but Seto is quite troublesome, and I'm sure DarkNite, alongside the opponents after him, will be too, and I was planning on grinding against Ishizu, since she actually gives 1800ATK Lv. 4 monsters with drop rates higher than 1/2048 or something, but they're still around 32/2048 or something and grinding against her can take forever because she's quite strong, I also wanted Acid Trap Hole from her, which is also about 32/2048. I still love Dark Duel Stories, but its reminded me of the main flaw with these early installments by Konami, they have too much grinding.

Well, I've managed to pull it off, my deck building skills aren't anything special, but I made sure to make the most out of what I had and it worked. I took on Seto, since he was the last one remaining to unlock DarkNite, all I had to do was win 5 times, but it took a while, since he beat me most of the time, afterall his deck was stacked with playsets of cards which are limited for the player, still I eventually won, it helps that my drops in the first 3 wins were sublime: La Jinn, Dark Elf and Bistro Butcher. DarkNite was a lot easier than Seto, which is odd since his deck is just as broken, if not more, he even has Jirai Gumo, a 2200ATK Lv. 4. I lost to DarkNite a few times, but way less than I did to Seto, and my 5 wins came quickly, after that he gave me a password for the credits and it was done. I know there are extra duelists after that, but it's just bonus content, I'm satisfied with just completing it normally, for now at least. I love Dark Duel Stories, just wish it had less grinding, less cards with 1/2048 drop rates and less opponents with a playset of cards that are limited for being broken, still a fun and charming experience though.

I'm quite fond of the Duel Monsters series that began all the way back on the original GameBoy, it was probably the 1st major series before World Championship took over, and even then it's sort of a precursor to those. I don't know why, but while I do enjoy the more in depth RPG that came in the GBA and DS, the simplicity of the earlier titles appeals to me, most specifically the tier system that they all shared until Duel Monsters 6/Stairway to the Destined Duel changed things up. I've managed to complete Duel Monsters 1 and Duel Monsters 3/Dark Duel Stories, and while I would like to play the other GameBoy Color ones they don't seem to have a translation, so the last one in this system I'm such a fan of is Duel Monsters 5/Eternal Duelist Soul, I've decided to give it a go and apparently it's one of the most popular ones, so I know it'll be good either way. So far it's going quite smooth, especially since the requirement to advance in tiers isn't 5 wins like before, at least in earlier tiers, and my deck is shaping up well. Still, I know many have way more experience with this particular installment with me, is there anything I should have in mind before going forward with this? What advice is crucial to get the most out of the experience? What am I in for?

I'm with you on this one, it's a rule set that, at least to me, made sure that duels had more flow than compared to translating the official OCG/TCG rule set in a video game, mostly due to the lack of phases in a turn, and with traps activating automatically when conditions are met, so there was no need for prompts asking if you wanted to activate something after everything you or your opponent did, and no need to change phases to attack and summon, just perfect and constant flow. My favorite part was tributing monsters, using Dark Hole, and only then tribute summoning my new monster.

>A fan sequel with the mechanics tweaked and the soul intact is all I want.
I recall there being a couple of fan remakes and/or sequels in the works, but I don't recall if any of them ever made it very far, either way it'd be lovely because FM's simplistic gameplay can be quite charming.

Is there a retro game in the franchise with the pack opening, deck building gameplay of Eternal Duelist Soul but with a competent AI? Though really the pack opening is a lot less important, every game I played had terrible AI except for Forbidden Memories, and that one is kind of in the opposite direction.

Well, if you're looking for a genuine challenge, then I'd recommend Reshef of Destruction, though most players find the difficulty there to be way too high for all of the wrong reasons, still, some do seem to like it, therefore you might like it if you give it a shot. What other installments in the franchise have you tried before besides Eternal Duelist Soul and Forbidden Memories? Have you already tried all of the GBA ones? Or all of the World Championship series on GBA and DS?

I couldn't agree more, while I do understand the appeal of current YGO, I just can't get into it. As soon as I start playing, all of my excitement fades when my opponents activates an effect that takes me a minute to read, only to activate another long effect right after it from yet another card I've never seen that I have to stop to read for a minute aswell, all the while I'm trying to understand their plays and thinking about what to do in response, it just keeps going until their turn ends with a full board and a lot of negations set up. I just find it overwhelming and tedious, something like FM captures the back and forth from the manga and anime a lot more, most specifically Duelist Kingdom due to tributes not being a thing, even if it feels dumbed due to its simplicity. I'm also fond of some GBC/GBA titles which featured simpler rules, even though they had tributes, so DDS, EDS, TSC, all of them to me function quite well.

The card game was still pretty fun up to tuner cards and xyz imo. It got a bit much with pendulum for me.

The intricacies of deck building with the sheer amount of cards and available synergies was pretty neat. So long as you didn't play with meta deck only people. Also helps once you know the cards, the effects can just be glossed w no expectations.

It is a complex game though, gets hampered by everyone's boner for OTKs though.

Look into GOAT format. It goes up to the June 2005 banlist and it’s the most popular “vintage” format. There’s a small community that plays on EDOpro

I also played Dark Duelist Stories, the translation of the first Gameboy one, Sacred Cards, and one of the other GBA ones but I can't recall which. Duelist of the Roses too, but too different. Last I was looking into the GBA games a guy on here was saying the AI in them is mostly like EDS.

I played YGO at a fairly high level (usually top 10% at regionals of a few hundred people when I was "good" but not "really good"), and I have to say the advanced format bears very, very little resemblance to "retro" formats like GOAT. And that's because of the prevalence of hand traps, which make actual trap cards comparatively useless.
There are hand traps that can (during your opponents turn):
>Negate an effect on the field
>1 turn Macro Cosmos (everything will be banished)
>1 turn Imperial Iron Wall (nothing can be banished)
>Raigeki from hand (pretty much, referring to Nibiru)
>Negate an add to hand effect or a send to grave effect (1 card)
>Banish opponent's extra deck cards
>Banish things from your opponent's graveyard
And so on....
Now imagine very clever/sneaky cheaters who draw whatever cards they want

The meta game revolves around hand traps and countering hand traps and trying to put a negate on the board early to protect from hand traps and you want effects to add your own hand traps and some archetypes have built in hand traps like one that is an omni-negate from hand (Subterrors)...

I cashed in my collection for about $4,000. Only regret is not keeping my GOAT deck...

RIP KT

My guess is that they tried implementing hand traps to stop OTK decks but hand traps ended up helping OTK decks even more.

It’s a bittersweet sort of feel.

I know that if I managed to become familiar with all of the most commonly played cards, it'd help a lot because I wouldn't have to keep reading them all of the time, but I still miss when effects were simpler and easier to keep up with, either way even if I knew what all of the cards did, I still don't enjoy current YGO much because it seems to be too focused on long turns full of special summons to try building an unbreakable board, it's like all decks need to be both a combo and a stun deck at the same time to stand a chance, and it tires me out overall, though I do get the appeal and I'm glad for the people that still enjoy playing it.

>>9081770
I'm familiar with GOAT format, and while I enjoy it much more than anything current, I still have my problems with it and feel there are things current YGO does it better, mostly regarding deck variety, deckbuilding was way too focused on using the same strong staples and it can get repetitive after a while, though I do find GOAT to be excelent in small doses.

Well, in this case I'd say to try out Reshef of Destruction, since it's the toughest one on the GBA by far, I don't recall how the AI played in most of the other GBA games though, so I don't know how different they are compared to EDS, in that case maybe trying out the World Championship titles on DS could work.

I just found my GBA Eternal Duelist laying around that had water damage. Good news, I got it too boot and it plays and runs well. I noticed it won't save so I changed the battery. Still won't save. Anyone else ever had this problem?

I have no idea what it could be considering you've already changed the battery, but I hope you can manage to figure it out, EDS is excelent and it'd be a waste to have a cartridge where you can't save, since it's a long playthrogh which makes saving crucial. I wish you good luck!
