How about villains that aren't just cardboard-cutout mustache-twiddlers? I found Suikoden 1 more compelling than 2 in part because Luca Blight was such an unbelievable cartoon. How about the Gargoyles in Ultima 6, or Batlin in Ultima 7? WRT Kefka, part of what I think is great about him as a villain was how clownish he seems early on, which makes the following events much more shocking. I read that he wasn't as much like that in the original Japanese script, so that's kind of interesting.

and he's a terrible example of that.

Except he was defeated and the world was literally restored to balance. You can even see people rebuilding at the end and cheering, versus lamenting in agony as their heroes failed to deliver them.

Final Fantasy VII's original ending, at least believed by sakaguchi till the Advent Children bullshit was that the -planet- won, over riding both humanity and sephiroth/jenova.

As far as that whole "watching the world burn thing" as much as I love TDK, the way I view people accepting Kefka as the best villain of retro gaming is like a pseudo film critic saying "da jokah" was the greatest antagonist in movie history, ever. Kefka is the go to "popular" choice. Even Ghaleon (pic related) Sega CD or PS1 has far more depth and appeal, but alas

Nothing fucking remotely new about this concept in JRPGs. This didn't happen in the Lufia series, it didn't happen in Suikoden, it didn't happen in Grandia or Grandia 2, it didn't happen in BoF IV or V or Dragon Quarter, it didn't happen in Xenogears of Final Fantasy Tactics, it didn't happen in Valkyrie Profile or Tactics Ogre, it didn't happen in phantasy star IV or even Chrono Cross. Where are these games that "THE CHAMPION OF FLOWERY FRIENDSHIP AND HOPE OVERCOMING ALL ODDS" which Final Fantasy VI -doesn't do at all-?
>sadly jrpgs are STILL DOING IT
Final Fantasy VI was not innovative in any fucking way for this concept. How the fuck did Terra and Celes and the gang beat Kefka? What innovative way did they trump the final boss that hadn't been done in previous Final Fantasies? In fact, the very ending is based on friendship and comradery and "not giving up", so I don't know where the fuck you got this idea that Final Fantasy VI is some magical antithesis to JRPG tropes.

Luca isn't even remotely unbelievable, even by reality standards. He was traumatized as a kid to the point of becoming a psychopath, but his royal blood meant that he got away with nearly everything demented he did for fear of the King's retribution.

As relentless and cruel as the acts committed may be, he has a solid reasoning behind his actions. He watched his mother get raped by men who were hired by the country that he so despised, so these were not completely random acts of murder.

I would never argue that he was a complex character, but to call him a cartoon is pretty silly.

>makes the workers operate in area where workers are struck by lightning
>gets the entire town to blame Ayumi after one of the lightning strikes
>acts nice to her in order to get into her pants
>treats Takuya like a child
>hires Yakuza to attack Ayumi and steal important documents to sell to a competing company
>has her so wrapped around his thumb that he not only molests her at work but also NTRs her in the Takuya's own house while kicking said MC out
>drives Ayumi to suicide after he spills the beans to her in the bad ending
What makes his actions even more rageworthy is how much of a nimrod Takuya is in this route when he says shit like "HURR THIS GUY'S DEFINITELY SUSPICIOUS EVEN THOUGH HE OBVIOUSLY IS DOING THIS SHIT TO YOU."

Ryuuzouji, rather the impostor posing as Ryuuzouji is a pretty evil enough guy who kills his mother, rapes Mitsuki, rapes Eriko in the bad end, AND kills Ayumi in the stupid final epilogue. But for me, Toyotomi hits where it really hurts while making you feel like you can't do shit about it as a player until the end.

For a series with such cookie cookie bad guys, I'm surprised Nintendo got away with this nignog.

Steals away the protagonist's wife, bangs her, murders the protagonist and half his friends, then rules as a emperor for at least a decade, bringing great prosperity to the world and uniting them as one.

Granted, he got played by some shitty cartoon villain cult who actually set him up with his half-sister, then let his empire go to shit after possessing his son with an ancient dark dragon god. Then he gets offed by the son of the protagonist who he murdered.

Then we realize that he set up his own death intentionally, letting a magical legendary weapon fall into the hero's hands. We're not even allowed to truly hate him, because they play him up as some unwilling pawn of a greater (and boring) evil.

Fuck yeah, Mother Brain.

My favorite thing about MB is the implication that all the life on Zebes is hostile because she psychically manipulates it to hate intruders.

My personal fanon about Mother Brain is that she wasn't even interested in trying again to weaponize metroids during the events of Super Metroid. She was just trying to lure Samus in to have close, personal vengeance for what happened to her in their first encounter. Of course, she had a backup plan in case she failed to turn Samus into dust: blow up the whole Goddamned planet with Samus in the deepest, most secure section of their base, assuming she'd not be able to escape again. Of course, MB never told the Space Pirates that she had set up such a powerful explosive.

Chances are, if you removed the Solaris puppeteers from the government below, even more wars would be instigated and almost certainly more death.

Granted, his initial solution to it all is pretty bonkers, but I much prefer him to the majority of villains.
