Hi /vr/. How are these Ys games? Are they real-time combat like Secret of Mana? Are the plots of each game relevant in the subsequent games?

Is there any reason not to play the original versions of the first 2 games? Like do the remakes add shit besides graphics?

i can definately recommend wanderers from ys on the snes and the oath in felghana on pc

i remember testing the first two on some old emulator a long time ago and thought the combat was completely uninvolved and the game itself to just be too simplistic, the later ones are spot on though, wanderers from ys is a cantidate for my favorite 16 bit action rpg

ys 3?
I really didn't like that game. It's a grind fest and if you don't do certain things you can get fucked over really easy.

to the OP, it plays a lot different from the other Ys titles, it's horizontal only.

But maybe you'll like it, give it a shot. The turbografx/pc engine version is supposed to be the best version from what I've heard.

probably running off of a little nostalgia admittedly, and there was a bit of grind but the combat was fun enough to make up for it imo

Here's the essential list of games to get:
For Ys I & II:
-Ys Book I & II on TG-16/PC Engine was one of the first games to use redbook audio, anime cutscenes, and good voice acting for its time.
-Ys I & II Chronicles for PC or PSP is a greatly expanded remake. Steam version has cloud saves and achievements.
-Ys II Special is supposed to be even better than the official Falcom version but is in Korean.
For Ys III:
-Genesis version for best one, PCE version for hilariously bad voice acting
-Oath in Felghana for PC and PSP. PSP version has voice acting, music options, and a few extra features that make the game easy. Steam version has better graphics, 60FPS, achievements, cloud saves, and more.
-If you have to choose which versions of Ys III, get Oath in Felghana
Ys IV:
-Get Dawn of Ys on TG-16 CD with a translation patch. Ignore Mask of the Sun on SNES. Neither was developed by Falcom
-An Oath in Felghana-style remake is in the works by Falcom for PSVita. Looks to have features from Ys VII. Get hype.
Ys V:
-Skip it
Ys VI:
-Either buy the PS2 release(and for the love of your ears, turn off English voices) with ugly CG and a few extra features, play a pirated Windows version with an unofficial translation patch, or just wait for an official Steam port from XSEED.
Ys VII:
-Simple. Get it on PSP/PSN.

BONUS! Other game series by Falcom:
Gurumin - cute little action-RPG with MC resembling Tita from Trails in the Sky
Brandish - top-down dungeon-crawling game where the screen turns instead of the player.
Trails in the Sky - One of THE best PSP JRPGs not by Atlus or Squeenix. Great writing, wonderful music, badass battle system will make you wish that XSEED finished localizing the even better sequel already.
Vantage Master Online - cool RPG strategy game with a free version.

I like the Genesis/Mega Drive version more. No awful voice acting and it makes better use of the Genesis sound chip than most games.

Some people say the TG16 version of the first two have a better soundtrack. Either way, play that or the steam version. They are awesome games.

pre ark of nephatism ys games arnt good
the series gets a free past because it was of the early action games to incorprate rpg and adventuring elements. The early games suffer from a horrible level scaling (enemies are almost never an appropriate challenge either they kill you in 3 hits or deal 1 damage. you just grind up until you cant actually die to anything except the bosses). the actual enemies themself were just different colored goombas just trying to walk into you.

ark of nephatism introduced enemies with much more complicated attacks, give ark a greater variety of attacks, and fixed the problem of you being able to be unkillable just by grinding, although there was a still problem of potions being too limited. the game also suffers from ass pacing requiring you to constantly run between npcs to unlock a story trigger (usually located way out of the way)

ys oath in felghana improved the series again giving arcs abilities more function and divercity. the challenge level is boosted yet again with faster more aggressive enemies and potions being removed

origin is the best in the series so far, dungeons are designed better having a sense of flow and structure instead of being randomly connected rooms, extra characters were added, boss fights became even more elborate, and the pacing is much better with cutscenes being immiedete events rather requiring you to hunt down npcs

ys seven had a lot of expirmental ideas that didnt work out. Theres a crafting system which ends up hurting the requring you to stop at many nodes and partake in long gathering animations and the actual crafting doesnt yield much strategy. you know have a party that fights which dumbs down combat as your partners end up tanking for you (they are immortal btw). The amount of spells and abilities is at an all time high but a lot of them are just the same shit. The difficulty also took a step down.

I would definitely recommend against Oath in Felghana on PC. Those fuckers at Xseed screwed the game over with DRM when they localized it.

The only DRM is Steam, and even then you can just pirate it

I have yet to encounter a boss that induces rage in me like this filthy mother fucker from Ys 1

Especially in the PCE version where you'll have 1/3rd the HP you would in the other versions, but his damage is EXACTLY THE SAME

I've played only the pc versions on steam: Ys: Origin and Oath in Felghana are some of the best action RPG's I've played. Music, bosses, combat, all great.
Ys 1 was very enjoyable, but it took me less than 4 hours to clear, way too short, I was really disapointed when I hit the max level. It was fun though, music was great, and very fastpaced. Just started Ys 2, seems similair to Ys 1 but not far enough into the game to make an opinion.
Apparently the remake adds some stuff, like when you do certain sidequests in the original version the questgiver would just give you some extra dialogue, in the remake it also gives some XP.

Anyone knows what the level cap is on Ys 2? Is it still that low?

Ys 2's level cap is 55, if I recall correctly
