Are there any remakes of /vr/ vidya that you prefer to the original?

>> No.9075014

good question, i don't think i can name one.
If we were talking remasters and not full blown remakes, ty the tasmanian tiger and kingdom hearts are the only franchises from 6th gen i can think of that got solid enough remasters to be better than the original.

While the pixel art is more timeless than the 3D presentation, Trials of Mana is my gold standard. Literally every single room, monster, NPC etc is accounted for - The one genuine fuckup is the lack of multiplayer; I guess modern Square-Enix didn't like the idea of not including some of their retardation in the final product. Really hope some autist mods it in.

actually was going to mention HG/SS being better than the original, with the caveat that the feel is different.
Given i was around 13 when they came out, they're nostalgic for me and the DS pokemon already had their own experience/feel.
>>9075019
i wanted to say that but sega raped the PC port with unfixable save bugs (nobody in this thread try to tell me "it works on my machine" because ive been through 3 machines in the time i owned it and none were 100% successful for fucks sake) so i eventually just bought a set of dreamcasts anyway.

>> No.9075037

Capturing the original experience is a fools errand - by definition any additions or changes, no matter how minute, will dilute it. This doesn't mean a remake can't be great on its own accord, but even remakes that are generally agreed to be good, like Resident Evil and Pokemon G/S, don't evoke the same "feeling" as the originals.

HGSS just does not look good graphically on any level to me. I don't know why people simp for Gen 4 Pokemon so much. The original Gen 2 is beautiful in its Game Boy simplicity. The music is all better in the original too. HGSS is probably the best Pokemon game to come out after Gen 2, but that's not saying much when every Pokemon game from Gen 2 was sending the series downhill

I think Kirby Super Star Ultra is maybe the only remake I can think of that I will happily play over the original with basically no reservations about it.

>So it's worse because it's changed for the better...?
How did it change for the better? The whole fucking theme of the game is about technology and its consequences, even having many pokemon like grimer, koffing, voltorb, magnemite, porygon, omanyte, kabuto, aerodactyl, MEWTWO to reflect this. Satoshi Tajiri is on record saying he devised pokemon out of his love for bug catching knowing the new generation of kids wont have a chance to experience it due to cities replacing forests. Kanto is literally based on the highly developed real life version of kanto in japan, with saffron in particular standing in for central tokyo, and yet they removed its roads, decreased the amount of buildings and cranked up the trees.

Another example: pewter city, it has a rock type gym leader, the fossil museum, it's near mt. moon and and corresponds to the typically mountainous gunma perfecture in japan. Pic related is how they depicted it in the original vs the remake. Which one would you say is more appropriately themed?

Gen3 was a hard reboot of the series. Tajiri was no longer directing and the anime was what people associated with how the Pokemon world looked, so the games were rebooted and altered to match it. Which means the average region in the Pokemon world is a perfect natural ecosystem of forests, deserts, mountains, and so on with towns respectfully scattered through them.

And it used to be that this was considered to be the same Earth that we knew in real life, just with Pokemon co-existing among normal animals and people. That steadily died off as more and more Pokemon with literal world-changing powers and lore kept overtaking the plot.

Here's the secret of KSSU's success: the reason it succeeded is because KSSU came at the tail end of a Kirby drought. Squeak Squad wasn't too special and the GameCube game was in development hell, not to mention Sakurai left HAL and Shimomura went MIA, and Kumazaki was years away from succeeding them. The future of the series was uncertain. In normal circumstances, Super Star would've been the one Kirby game that needed a remake the least, but HAL needed a surefire way to energize the fanbase and picked an easy win. Super Star wasn't on Virtual Console yet, remember. KSSU reeled in new fans while at the same time satisfying old fans looking to relive their childhood memories. Are those memories off when you directly compare them with the original ROM? Certainly, but most people are normies and won't bother. KSSU was hailed as the best Kirby game in years in a string of low-effort, barely-passing entries. If it came at any other time, it woud have been held to scrutiny exactly like NiDL has. But it came at the right time to hook people by the nostalgiaballs.

Not him, but I have one - the feel of Kokiri Forest in Ocarina of Time and the idea to add fairies to mark fade-in NPCs froma distance was totally due to N64 fog/drawdistance. Would a proper remake escew these details and potentially change up the story, or stick to it despite no longer being an issue?

The meaningful graphics improvements come from the higher resolution models, especially characters and monsters, which are more accurate to the original promo illustrations. Textures are generally improved. The textures/lighting in some places would be better IMO if they were changed back to the V0 Gold cart version, but given what I mentioned before (including first post), plus QOL improvements like the easy-toggle iron boots and the deku tree speaking faster, I say that the package as a whole is a worthwhile improvement, which I prefer to play over the original. I acknowledged that I would still like those lighting/texture points to be reverted back to how they were before, but I don't consider it to be an inferior package overall, because the improvements more than make up for the downsides. If you are so focused on the textures and lighting being different in certain spots that you can't appreciate any of the other benefits that I mentioned, well then that's a problem for you, not for me. Live with the fact that I have a different opinion, or just seethe about it. I won't read your reply either way.

I still think the TurboGrafx-16 version is the best one, fixing several issues with the original game, and is probably closer to how the developers envisioned the game in the first place. And it has a pretty good PC recreation and a WIP widescreen source port.

Megaman Maverick Hunter X and Dracula X Chronicles. I love the low poly look of both of them, and their controls just feel so smoother to me than the originals. Genuinely bitter both of them have been trapped forever on the PSP, especially with DXC. Castlevania Requiem is literally just a port of DXC with the remake taken out.

not same anon, but each newer pokemon gens after the GBC and especially after the GBA looks like an entire gen behind. The more it goes, the cheaper it really feels
HGSS indeed doesn't look or feel terribly impressive in the slightest and for being the most profitable franchise on earth and most mainline games reaching double digit million sales, that's kinda shameful

I get what you're saying, but it was a 4th gen Pokemon game, so naturally it would stay in that style. I think it definitely sets itself apart from D/P in terms of looks still.

Most people praise HGSS for the amount of added content that also feels faithful to the original games. The only shit I don't really care for is forcing the legendary quests, but that's something that went out the window for Pokemon since gen III.

Other than enhanced ports, I can't think of any I /prefer/, but there are a few I like just as much as the original, mostly because the "remake" differs so greatly from the source material that it might as well be a different game entirely.

C&C Remastered, even though I like the redone graphics what pushes this into
>prefer to the original
is the fact that you can still play the original graphics, but now on modern displays with proper scaling.
All the behind the scenes clips and optional QoL features are just the cherry on top.
I'd actually be curious why anyone wouldn't prefer this, as it has the entire original game intact, but with more (optionally) on top. They even fucking did the installation sequence.

Oh, Perfect Dark! That would definitely be my choice as well, finally gave my LUX revolver a pimpin' tiger grip.
Frankly, I'm struggling naming one on my own, just because I simply study which version I will play before playing the game, but never care to actually remember which version I've played after all. But I'm not shy of picking a remake if it is a good one.

All-Stars SMB1, didn't play other NES counterparts to compare. I know the original is iconic, but I love 16-bit graphics, it's just so damn comfy. Love the backgrounds, especially Bowser's castle, and Toad scenes at the end of the each world are super fun.

The wrong brick physics is noticeable tho. Some people on this board were saying it's a TAS level difference, but that's bullshit, whenever I smash a brick on the run I hit the one in front of it and lose speed. Not a huge deal, however, and must be fixed in romhacks.

I consider fire red/leaf green to be miles above the OG. Same with heart gold and soul silver.
Now the gen 3 remakes? Fucking cancer, laziest thing I've played, they just ran with what they "built" for X and Y including the no trainer sprite bullshit.
Gen 4 is actually pretty good, they just added some QQL but left the game intact.

A good number of people on this site hate it and Nightdive in general (Rightfully so, fuck those cunts), but the Turok remasters are incredible. I spent hundreds of hours on the N64 versions and while they're fun, they run at a terrible framerate even for the system. Playing them at full speed is a fucking blast.

Nightdive were fine, for a while. Then they tried to make their engine run everything under the sun. Hopefully they learn from this Blade Runner fiasco
But for example their Doom 64 port is fantastic, albeit it was basically made years before by Kaiser

Images like this always baffle me because they nitpick over the tiniest shit instead of blatant problems like "KSSU requires two game carts for multiplayer when the original only needed one" or "64DS' controls suck and the character switching breaks a lot of the natural flow of the original game"
Like Tall Tall Mountain getting a waterfall in its enterance portrait is not the biggest problem the game has by a fucking longshot
