FF1 is probably my outright favorite, but I enjoyed Ultima III as well.

Final Fantasy III. Best JRPG on the system, best 8-bit JRPG ever made.

I'm a big fan of NES/Famicom RPGs, here is the list of what I've played so far (not including A-RPGs or other stuff like that, including the DB/Z games is already stretching it a bit I guess)

>God Tier
DQ2
FF2
Earthbound Beginnings
Digital Devil Story - Megami Tensei II

>High Tier
FF1
DQ3
DQ4
Metal Max
Lagrange Point

>Good+ Tier
DQ1
FF3
Ninjara Hoi!
SD Keiji - Blader
Sweet Home (not sure this counts as it's also a hybrid game)
Dream Master
Jubei Quest

>Good Tier
Tenchi Wo Kurau 2 - Shokatsu Koumei Den (Destiny of An Emperor 2)
Ganbare Goemon Gaiden 2 - Tenka no Zaihou
Ghost Lion
Musashi No Bouken
Heracles no Eiko II: Titan no Metsubo

>Okay Tier
Ganbare Goemon Gaiden - Kieta Ougon Kiseru
Otaku no Seiza - An Adventure in the Otaku Galaxy

>Bad Tier
Destiny of An Emperor
Bloody Warriors Shan-Go no Gyakushuu
LaSalle Ishii no Child's Quest

>Shovelware Tier
All the Dragon Ball / Dragon Ball Z games. DB2 and DBZ2 were the best ones. DB3 hasn't been translated so I haven't played it
Ushio To Tora
Nakayoshi to Issho

tl;dr, if you've already played all the DQ/FF games and still want more, the ones I recommend the most would be

>Megami Tensei II
Tons of content, more mature story/world (aimed at teens rather than kids)

>Earthbound Beginnings
Obviously one of the bests DQ clones, my only gripe would be the lack of real bosses as in the second half all the bosses get freebies; but then again DQ games also didn't have many bosses

>Metal Max
Takes inspiration from both DQ and FF. Hunt bounties while using tanks! The game balance is based on parts where you use your tanks and parts where you go by foot. Soulful world. Spawned an entire series, MM2 (untranslated on SFC) and Metal Max Returns (a remake of this one) are also great, then the PS2/DS/3DS games are okay.

>Lagrange Point
Another DQ clone but the world is original enough to make its stand on its own. Amazing graphics/musics, lot's of characters to choose from, craft your own weapons.

>Dream Master
Puzzle/RPG hybrid. Basically it's a LOT like Sweet Home except more developed than Sweet Home both in the gameplay and puzzle deparments. Play Sweet Home first, then this. Make sure to read the reviews on romhacking.net to play the game/translation properly.

And then after all that, there are some good DQ clones like Ninjara Hoi!, Jubei Quest and Heracles no Eiko II(DQ2 clones) or SD Keiji Blader and Musashi No Bouken (DQ1 clones)

Double Moon Densetsu could have been a great game. It's a middle ground between DQ and FF. However balancing is whack, it starts off really hard, but then in the last 2/3rd of the games no enemies could barely scratch me, including bosses! And I didn't even grind! What a shame. Also, huge spoiler the game kills off 11 out of 13 party members for the final dungeon/bosses, hope you used that 1 companion the game leaves you and he's not left at lvl 11, nothing personal kid

Truly just incredible for a Famicom game, it's no wonder Shin Megami Tensei is basically the same game.
>>9074465
The KMT version of II was the only version playable in English until recently, so that's the version I've beaten as well, but the sound and graphics fucking suck compared to the Famicom release. The carry-over unlockables between I and II in KMT are cool, but that's the only improvement. Unironically a soul / soulless situation.

make sure to play the latest version of the translation, the ones before had crucial bugs that got fixed. Things that could softlock your game and more. So, don't download a pre patched version unless it specifically gives the correct version number

Aight, I've gotten past the Yellow Turban Rebellion part and I think I'm gonna tap out. I actually like almost everything about it, but it is clearly getting more and more cumbersome.

I REALLY did NOT like this game. It actually had a huge following in the US apparently but several romhacks, I can't understand why besides the fact it's one of the few JRPGs we actually got on NES.

The sequel is better in every way though, you might want to give that a try. If you're bothered by the slow walk speed know that you'll get an item to run afterwards.
