9068714 No.9068714 [Reply] [Original]

The enemies from Final Fantasy IV PSP are very god damn nice compared to GBA and SNES versions. Final Fantasy V for the IOS has the best versions of monsters, but we didn't get them for the Pixel Remasters.
Proper remake of Final Fantasies IV-VI when?

>> No.9068868

I kind of like the updated graphics for the sole reason that the original versions were often really hard to understand visually. There were tons of enemies that I had no idea wtf they actually were supposed to be back then. I still prefer the look of the originals, but it's nice to be able to say "oh, it was a hunchback dude with an old-fashioned pilot hat and goggles holding a wrench" rather than "it kind of looks like a goblin with a weird sword I guess".

I don't think they expect fans to fix the remasters at all. If Rockstar's treatment of the GTA remasters is reflective of most publishers, they just wanted to pump out cheaply-made remasters for fans to pay full price for, and even then they don't expect most players to actually beat them. Just play for a tiny bit to relive that nostalgia, and then pick up the newest release.

>>9070523
It's a good remake but it's still disappointing compared to the original. A lot of the increased difficulty is lazily balanced. Flamedogs are a good example. In the OG game, their fire attack does hp-based damage (25% of your max health iirc). More importantly, it's only used by the AI script when the flamedog is the sole remaining enemy. The DS version didn't fuss with any of that complexity and just gave flamedogs a massively OP full-party fire damage attack with fully random AI. If you're lucky, flamedogs are a pushover. If you get surprised and two dogs both use their fire attack, you'll get wrecked and maybe even game-over'd (unless you did a lot of grinding). This is a mid-game enemy.

With or without remakes there's no way to get the definitive retro FF experience without reading moon, and even THEN you have bugs to deal with. Remakes are a good concept that Square just sucks at. Dragon Quest has the same problem.

https://www.romhacking.net/translations/734/
These were made way back in 2002 and were planned to have more work done, but the authors stopped after the PlayStation ports were announced because they didn't want to tread on Square's toes. There's recently been an effort to make the WSC version of IV fully playable in English, but unlike I&II, that one's pretty bad and the basis for the GBA version. III just never got made despite getting screenshots, and the reasons speculate from the failure of the handheld, to losing the source code, to Square getting greedy and opting for a 3D remake in development. I don't know if I believe the former because they still could've resumed work on PS1 or GBA, and the latter has some truth to it since a PS2 remake was conceived at one point but plans fell through and it eventually became a DS game.

I love it but it's probably the least fair Final Fantasy game.
In addition to the obtuse parts of the original FF4 that were maintained, it adds in additional systems that are horribly unintuitive in ways that are difficult to understand at first.
Within the first few hours of the game you are given the ability to make decisions that will affect the permanent strength not just of the characters you have, but of characters you haven't even met yet.
Some of the most important things you can do for your success are accomplished by taking actions that seem completely illogical and pointless.
On top of all that, the difficultly was increased across the board from the original.
If you like your RPGs challenging and dig the low-poly-models/pixel-art-GUI aesthetic I think it's probably the best version to play. On the other hand if you're one of those people who can't play a Final Fantasy game without a Missables FAQ open on the other monitor you should stay far, far away.
It's controversial for a reason but it's also a pretty unique experience. I haven't played another RPG that's quite like it.
