I wouldn't say Sonic & Tails/Sonic Chaos was good enough to be considered the peak Sonic experience, regardless of it being the Master System or Game Gear version. though I do prefer the handheld's version simply due to the screen resolution, which makes things slighty harder and more interesting to get by. Overall it reminds me a lot of Sonic CD, where the idea isn't to just get to the end of each level, but to explore them, the problem is that Sonic CD still worked well enough if you just wanted a standard Sonic experience, while here the levels are over in less than 30 seconds if you play it this way, also you're expected to explore not to find generators or anything like that, instead you have to find rings so you can get 100 of them, which will take you to the special stage, so you can get the emerald. I'd say that going for the emeralds and conquering the special stages is actually interesting and makes this worth it, but overall having ring collecting as your main objective doesn't feel much like Sonic, and level design overall suffers because of it. Sonic & Tails/Sonic Chaos is an excelent time, but not peak Sonic.

special stage music is so nostalgic for me. I loved the rocket shoes and giant rings however actually getting the chaos emeralds before the time ran out was very difficult for me as a kid.

Boring. The two games before it are far better.

I've decided to replay Sonic & Tails thanks to this thread, since I have fond memories with it and it's been a while since the last time I gave it a playthrough, it was never my favorite Sonic of all, but one I considered to be excelent nonetheless. One thing that needs to be cleared up right away is that if you decide to not go for 100% completion, or simply prefer to play with Tails, which can't go for 100% for some reason, your experience will be relatively comfortable, perhaps too comfortable, levels can end in about 30 seconds, even the last few levels, and you're given plenty of rings to make sure you can reach the special stages. As a traditional Sonic experience, it still functions, Sonic has all moves you'd expect him to have, and Tails too, but level design is clearly made with 100% completion in mind, and that's how you'd get the most out of Sonic & Tails. When you play as Sonic and go for 100%, that's when it opens up, since you now have to explore the levels to get 100 rings, to have a shot at the interesting and well made special stages, and while I don't find ring collecting to be Sonic's strong point, it still works, especially since these levels are designed in a way that's fun to explore, and Sonic controls well while doing so.

I mostly agree, Sonic 1 is definitely better than Sonic Chaos, but Sonic 2... it depends on the version, on the Game Gear Sonic 2 feels like it was some sort of prank, still excelent overall, but the 1st boss is much harder than on the Master System, and it becomes the hardest one in the whole playthrough, which makes no sense, I recall never getting past Underground Zone as a kid for that reason, so on the Game Gear Sonic Chaos feels much better to me, it's on the Master System that Sonic 2 really surpasses it.
