What's the optimal way to play final fantasy 6? I am talking about official version, console/emulator, translation, patch, whatever. How do you bring out the best in this game?
Do you keep woolsey's translation?
do you patch cyan?
do you fix bugs?
do you let cid die?
do you rescue shadow?
tell me everything

>> No.9052869

>>9052843
retranslated gets rid of the blitz tutorial and makes one of the characters (Cyan) sound kinda stupid
But it's also the only version of F6 I've played. So, having played FF6 in this way, I would say just go and play 7

>optimal way
SNES version is fine, maybe on flashcart with some bug fix patches applied (so blind does more than give you cool sunglasses). The bugs aren't that big of a deal though really, so just straight SNES version is fine. T-Edition is sweet but best to save for a second playthrough. I just wish someone made a hack to put the GBA extras into the SNES rom.

Personally:
>Do you keep woolsey's translation?
Yes.
>do you patch cyan?
No.
>do you fix bugs?
No.
>do you let cid die?
First time when I didn't know. After that I always save him, though frankly the scene is much better if he dies.
>do you rescue shadow?
Yes.

same, i first played the gba version back in the day and then played the snes vanilla one some two years ago and while pretty much everything was better on the snes one, music, text, translation, colors, i missed ultima weapon and other goodies.
also i let cid die cause it's better character development for ceres

First time playing? Play original unmodified SNES version, warts and all.
Replaying after a long time? Maybe try Ted Woolsey Edition or Retranslated, or original Steam version with mods if you want the extra content.
Played a fuckton of times and want something to spice it up? T-Edition.

>>9052843
>Do you keep woolsey's translation?
Its biggest issues are certain muddled plot points and the censorship. Otherwise it's fine, and even the more accurate GBA version pays homage to it in a lot of places.
>do you patch cyan?
Game's easy enough that you don't really need to, but man is he more fun to use with a bar that fills up twice as quick, that's for sure.
>do you fix bugs?
I'm a bit conflicted on this. On the one hand, it's insane how many bugs, both minor and major, made it into the game, and patching them does make the game feel a little more polished. On the other hand, 128 MBlock setups, cheesy as they are, are fucking boss, and I sometimes find myself missing them. Terra in particular is a verifiable monster with it.
>do you let cid die?
I always let him die, view the cutscene, then reload the save and save him. Dunno why, it makes no difference either way.
>do you rescue shadow?
Always. No reason ever to let him die, unless you really want to see Relm's dream, I guess. He's fucking boss, even if he does fall off a bit compared to other characters come late game.

SNES. Runs great on the SNES mini. I’m sure the Steam version is fine but that’s not the best one to start with.

I’m in the middle of my second play through right now, hopefully I’ll save Shadow this time. I really love this game. I’ve only gotten through a handful of pure RPGs in my life, and this is one of the very few I found worth doing a second time.

For the most part, no. The new super bosses are nice, but the dungeon you fight them in is a total slog to get through, and many if not most of the new "ultimate" weapons are badly designed and straight-up inferior to the old ones. The Soul Shrine is also ok, but gets old after a while. Best thing about it beyond the superbosses is being able to save after beating the game, which allows you to farm infinite amounts of the real ultimate weapon to create some insane equipment setups, but you really only want to do this once or twice.

>>9055040
So in the original FF6 when you beat all the dragons, you would've unlock a boss fight with the Czar Dragon, a superboss. But at some point during development, it was cut from the final version of the game. In the Advance version instead of that, beating the dragons unlocks a new multi-party dungeon with WAY stronger versions of the eight dragons. You also gain new character-specific ultimate weapons for each of the characters. Since it's a multi-party dungeon, you really have to strategize and find the best use for each party member. Each dragon is easily stronger than the final Kefka battle. Once you beat all the stronger dragons you unlock the battle with the Kaiser Dragon a supped up version of the original cut superboss. Also, once you beat him, you unseal Omega Weapon so you get ANOTHER superboss. It's a very enjoyable dungeon and boss fight and is basically them restoring cut content from the original, and making it even better. If you actually enjoyed playing the game, you'll love getting more of it and the challenge it presents. There's also a another new area called called the Soul Shrine which is like an endurance battle, but gives you the opportunity to farm multiple character-specific ultimate weapons. It's pretty challenging and it also gives you the opportunity to fight the Kaiser Dragon again.

Not him, but he looks quite proud of the fact that he got bugfixes out of Dr Meat (GBA-based Relocalization) and Silent Enigma (of ROSE) and plays that up to give the impression that they proofred and approve, meanwhile he derides this "Hairy_hen" person as basically another Sky Render and seems to be outright lying about "the famous lines" (which ones?) part; you can judge for yourself by looking at the annotations from the initial release of H_H's mod (https://pastebin.com/RyVqkRnY)), it's clearly not even remotely comparable to SR's dry and oudated hack, which Tomato pretty much spent an entire analysis babysitting (https://legendsoflocalization.com/final-fantasy-vi/))

Rodimus dislikes hen because she used TWUE as a base for stylistic reasons and then threw everything out the window to redo it from scratch after learning that Skyrender's hack was a disgrace since TWUE itself was heavily based on the Skyrender hack in the early days. I think the Skyrender influences were gradually scrubbed out of later versions of TWUE since Rodimus appears to be distancing himself from it, though it's hard to tell because he seems to always conveniently come up with an "update" whenever someone announces another relocalization. Shame about SilentEngima, I actually liked ROSE better.

I don't see the issue with modders updating their projects to be better over time. They all seem to do so on big projects like this, even hairy hen did so. Last time I checked, the makers of these mods all still got along well with each other. However, here on vr there seems to be one that just has a hard on hatred for Rodimus based on assumptions. It is always this same post too. I like the work the modders did, each with their own merit and style. Gives people options depending on what you want.
