There is something oddly nice about buying used vidya with the signs from previous owners.
Not talking about half-torn labels and dog chewed cartridges, that's shit. But something small like pic related is incredibly cute.
You can only imagine what life story this game had before ending up in your coomlection and what did its owner look like.

I actually have a dog chewed cartridge that I really enjoy. It's a Game Boy Camera, and it has some light teeth marks here ant there that signify the owner accidentally left it in a spot where their dog could get it. The best part here is that on the Game Boy Camera are photos of the guy's dog, so I presumably have photos of the culprit.

Kinda related but I always leave the save data from previous people. If all slots are full, I will delete the one with least progress / time and use that one. My copy of Secret Of Mana had 3/4 slots used. 2 boys names and then "Dad". This family's save data is safe with me.

Okay, certainly not retro, but I've bought Tomodachi Life cart for 3DS once and there were Miis which were most likely made to resemble previous owner (girl) and her friends.
I didn't need them as I wanted to create my own but I just couldn't bring myself delete them completely, so I've made backups for Mii gallery and now they live there.

Also I have Secret of Mana's cartridge with someone's saves too, but note that if battery's old it may be erased after a while, unless you'll find a way to make backups somehow.

Ive refused to delete it myself especially after seeing her, her mom and her sister shared the game. I walk around the town and make sure it’s all clean and try and make sure no villagers leave. My point was that you wouldn't hit 600 hours from falling asleep while playing the game. The system would likely run out of battery power by the time you wake up, and Pokemon didn't have autosaving until many years later so the game would not have been auto-saving your time either.

Even IF that was the case, people on average sleep around 8 hours. That would be a shitload of falling asleep, being lucky enough to have the system still have battery power when you wake up, and choosing to save to get to over 600 hours.

Not if it was an original GBA which uses non-rechargeable batteries. The charger cable was also not very long and if you toss/turn in your sleep would get unplugged since it didn't clip into the charging port that strongly.

What do you think is more likely? That the previous owner of that game fell asleep while playing, had a GBA:SP or DS connected to a charger, the charger did not manage to become unplugged until they woke up, and then when they did they decided to save their game that was running doing nothing..... and then had this happen somewhere around FIVE DOZEN TIMES to add up to that kind of playtime.

.... or that the previous owner just simply played that section of the game a lot?

Acquiring a lot of playtime makes sense if we're talking about something like Steam where the system would not be running on batteries and records how long you are playing as you play, not so much for a battery-powered Nintendo system from two decades ago with a game that has no auto-save.

I have bought a lot of used memorycards from thrift shops and garage sales when they are just a few bucks since I have been collecting retro games and need a lot more memorycards for my saves now. I always check them out to see what is on them out of curiosity before wiping them.

It's almost always packed with nothing Call of Duty (or something similar) and Madden/other sports games saves, and sometimes a single random unexpected game that clearly was only played a little bit and then discarded/returned.

Latest one was someone selling a whole PS2 system with the cables, a memcard, and two (crappy third party wireless) controllers for $25 at a garage sale. The memcard was just COD and Madden like usual, and one Dark Cloud 2 save.
