Who is the least respected retro game developer in your opinion?
Let me quantify - least respected can be by players or other developers, or even both.

Hideous Kojima. He'd make shitty movies instead of proper videogames and was one of the biggest factors for the heavy casualisation of videogames into being "cinematic experiences", great gameplay and innovative game design be damned.

Kojima is good at doing what he does. He's a talented director. It's Kojima's tastes that are questionable. I mean, the outright fanboy worship of Hollywood, and all of the pseudo philosophical shit was cute when he was making smaller games, but past a certain point it becomes garish.

MGS1 is so fucking interesting. It was an absolute tried and true video game that also on top offered you a really elaborate and interesting story. It's an absolute master piece. But the entire industry INCLUDING KOJIMA HIMSELF some fucking how took MGS' success the wrong way and started to make movie games.
Plus Kojima is so extremely obsessed with american culture it's unreal. How can you make one of the best vidya's ever and be completely shit ever since. Fucker literally just made one good game.

Well, Kojima has always been like that. He was making adventure games that were closest thing he could make to American movies, even before MGS.
A movie game isn't even necessarily a bad thing, within it's own context. It's just that people got this idea in their heads that that was THE direction games were supposed to go in, rather than a sidestreet into a slightly different artistic medium altogether.
I think I miss adventure games being a properly defined genre. When we lost that is kind of when things went skewwy. Now shooters are basically adventure games without puzzles.

yea i was actually trying to say exactly that. elaborate stories can be pretty cool and the first MGS would lose a great deal of it's charme if that part was missing. But if it gets extremely omnipresent in the market OR is the only thing the game has going for it then we got a problem in our hands.

Fatlus budget weeb games are better than the AAA SE games and that's a sad fact. Persona is pretty fucked as a series though since it has become the cash cow for Fatlus and the pollution and rubbish of the spin-off series is slowly seeping into mainline SMT and non-SMT games. Myst was super popular in the 90's and Riven too but in the late 00's and early 10's it became very fashionable for game journalists to tell everyone how much they hate Myst. Cyan retroactively became the most hated game developers in the world. Then the journalists evolved from edgy contrarians into holier than thou sjw's and the industry evolved into having lots of commercial indie games and everyone started to love Cyan again.

Not a developer though but owned a couple publishing labels. Midas Interactive and Phoenix Games.
Both were notorious for publishing absolute garbage though extremely rarely there was a decent release. Phoenix was started as an alternative label purely on the basis that the games sold under it were too garbage for even Midas, and that there was potential profit for releasing literally anything on a PS2 disc. And I do mean literally anything.
