Let's discuss this Super Nintendo masterpiece, please share favorite levels, moments, memories, whatever you want, ive been going through this game again recently and its so fucking full of content, makes me feel like this is honestly peak Mario.

I was around 4 years old when i was warped to the Special World for the first time, it BLEW my mind as a kid, the design is so simple, yet it does make you feel like the Star Road just transported you to another dimension outside of Yoshi's Island, also the music is pretty top notch.

>> No.9049915

I'd rank it slightly higher than Mario 3 but it is a fucking big shame the repetitive level themes and the limited amount of power-ups, it could have been so much better
also spin jump kinda dumb

>> No.9049973

>>9049912
Triggers me since I was a kid the fact that the red and blue ! blocks don't give any power ups. Red block should give red flowers and Blue blocks stars.

And I still remember the first time I pass Tubular. I get late on school and lost the first class, lol.

This. Also it's much too easy, there's barely any increase in difficulty except for special world, so there's not much of a challenge.

one of the first games i ever played in my life, if not first (cant quite recall). had massive nostalgia bias for it, but i despise it now as adult after playing smb3 recently for the first time. smw is piece of shit in comparison

SMW is easily in my top 10 favourite games of all time, maybe too 5.

It’s comfy, varied and simple.

I’ve only recent got into romhacks and am enjoying return to dinosaur land. 99% of the other hacks I’ve played are not faithful to the original game, which is a deal breaker for me.

Forest of illusion is probably my favourite part of the game. I only wish there were more puzzle elements to the game as a whole.

The Switch Palaces were always exciting to unlock as a kid.

I would only know how to get the Yellow Ones at first (pretty much given away after Yoshi's Island 1), but discovering all of this game's secret exits was a real adventure.

Of course nowadays it feels shorter and WAY easier considering we've grown up, but honestly, some Levels in Chocolate Island and Valley of Bowser are pretty fucking difficult.

>> No.9050023

I remember that before I had the SNES, there was an arcade version of this on the boardwalk that my dad would take me to on Saturdays. I was probably 5 or 6. All week I couldn’t wait to give it just another few minutes.

Then I got the game that next Christmas and was really stoked. I read in a magazine how to do the star road trick so I beat it through the back door pretty quickly but I kept playing to see the other levels. I think it was 6 or 7 years until i found all the exits. The last one I found was the secret exit in the Ghost House on Bowser’s keep, I didn’t understand that you could control the coin movements with the D pad so I would try to duck & fly under that little crack.

Ah what a great game. Still brings me joy to play.

The amount of secret exits is mesmerizing for its time.

Seriously, even if the difficulty only peaks at the last 3 worlds the game still has a lot of content

>playing Family Game (Famiclone) every day. SMB3 being one of my most played ones (and had the famous hacked bootleg that lets you use any powerup as many times as you want, I explored every single corner of every level)
>rich neighbor invites me to his house
>shows me his Super Nintendo with Super Mario World
>loved everything about it
>the music in bowser's valley sounded like an actual heavy metal band playing as far as I was concerned
>back home, going back to SMB3 was kind of a bummer now that I had tried the new one
>fast-forward a year or so later and I get my own SNES with SMW, loved the hell out of it, still my favorite Mario
Also I think one of the reasons the Mario series is respected, besides of how polished these games are, is because each entry in the series feels like its own game, with the only exception being SMB2J/LL.
SMB1, 3 and World all have their own physics, art style and nuance. They do feel like they belong to the same family, but are completely different. Not just a quick sequel that's "more of the same".
When people say "all mario games are the same", it's like yeah I can understand that, but have into account all 3 Mario games (and 2/USA) were built from 0, they didn't reuse any actual asset from the previous game. All physics are different. Very different.
I think Nintendo didn't do another sequel like SMB2J until New series and Galaxy 2. Up until that point, each mario game was basically its own thing.

I love SMW, it's related to the oldest memory that I have. I remember driving home in the back of my mom's car in winter when she parked the car and left me in the backseat whilst she quickly went into a shop.
The next thing I remember is sitting in our living room (it was one of those comfy winter evening around Christmas) and watching the family play SMW. My neighbourhood friend even showed up (he often came around without calling in advance) and we were all sitting around the television. Comfy evening.

>repetitive level themes
This is kind of a misconception.
Yeah, SMB3 has desert, ice, giant, etc but at its core, it's still the same kind of levels: athletic, underground, water, castle, as in SMB1.
SMB3 added airships, while SMW added Ghost Houses (to differentiate the more action-packed fortresses/castles from the more puzzle-natured levels the ghost houses have, in 3, many fortresses were more puzzle than action). In terms of themes, yeah world isn't as eclectic in the locations, but it kind of makes sense that there wouldn't be an ice region in a tropical place like Dinosaur Land (although there is 2 ice levels and a couple of ice sub-zones in some levels), SMW is just one big map as opposed to many different ones.
Anyway, yeah, SMW might even have more variety considering it added the Ghost Houses.
But all Mario games are quite balanced in level themes.
Also, World has the best underwater controls in the series for me.
>>9050685
lol that hyperbole, but yeah the spinjump is cool, thought probably my favorite thing about SMW (aside from the refined overall physics) is being able to throw shells/objects in many different angles and not just horizontally.

no, that's the whole point, having varied settings does matter and helps makes the level more unique, it's not a misconception to say that SMB3 has more varied level settings, you are just ignoring that and equating it to variety from a purely gameplay perespective which are completely different things

I understand and I actually think the variety of locations and themes in SMB3 is a huge plus, but I don't think SMW needs that, it has its own thing going for it, which is a big interconnected map with a cohesive, consistent theme.
Both are pretty good and it's nice we get two different kind of games instead of just a same-y sequel.

Best 2d mario game hands down.
I got my first console as the GBA SP and Super Mario Advance 4. I played it nonstop. I played it more than any other GBA game.
I remember where I was and what I was doing when I beat Soda Lake - which I had heard was the hardest level in the game - only to get my ass kicked by Tubular for a very long time.

>> No.9051067

>>9051061
Soda Lake is not the hardest, just considered the most well hidden level, or at least one that people kept searching for because the Torpedo Teds were teased in the ending roll.
Tubular is by far THE filter level, I'd say one of the most famous filter levels of all time. All it requires is a tiny bit of patience, but it's something most kids lack. Actual hardest level in the game (SMB2J levels of hard) is Outrageous.

I was a kid at summer day camp back in the early 00's and they had a super nintendo with mario world. Very few kids could beat the game, and it was usually a community effort jsut to get to forest of illusion. We didnt warp through the star world to other points and it was usually butter bridge or the castles that made us game over. It always felt like the map was huge and there always seemed to be new secrets around every corner, like the star road entrance in the rocks inside the cave or top secret area, and how to reach that castle coming out of the woods when forest of illusion kept sending us in circles. Ive played it a billion times at least and nothing comes off as really hard anymore, hell I can blow through it in a day or 2 even if Im trying to grab everything.

God what I would give to be an incompetent kid again with a limitless summer ahead of me

>> No.9051617

Still my favorite 2D Mario. I remember getting stuck on Tubular as a kid for like a year or something (could've been less, but felt like it) before finally finishing it and then getting through the rest of the special stages with much less difficulty.
