Sonic 2 is by far one of the most recognizeable title in the series, to many it's their introduction to the character, most likely bundled in with the SEGA Genesis in the 1990's. I know many feel that Sonic 3 & Knuckles is superior, and I can see why that's the case, but in the end it's a matter of preference, and to me Sonic 2 always felt more right for some reason, the stages being more condensed and shorter in general is usually seen as something Sonic 3 & Knuckles improved upon by increasing the scope, but to me Sonic 2's size always felt just right, and the sense of speed is exhilarating, I love it.

However, there's one thing that stops me from replaying Sonic 2 as much as I'd like, something that makes this title, which in my eyes is pretty much the perfect Sonic title, not so perfect at all, and that's the Special Stages. I don't know how many of you are like me in this regard, but when I love my experience with a video game, simply getting to the end doesn't feel quite right, I always aim for 100% completion when it comes to my favorite titles, or else the whole thing just isn't as satisfying, especially if not getting the 100% results in a bad ending, which just spoils the whole experience for me.

Sadly, Sonic 2 is the most difficult Sonic title to 100% on the SEGA Genesis, the Special Stages are tough, if you don't have them memorized then you'll fail, especially if you prefer playing with Sonic & Tails. Also, trying to go to the Special Stages constantly ruins the flow of stages, since you have to hold on to your rings as much as possible while looking for a checkpoint, it forces you to play in a slow and cautious manner, instead of going fast. I beat Sonic 2 100% once, by going to the Special Stages constantly, but that ruined the pacing, I wish it was more fun to go for 100% completion in Sonic 2.

If you wanna go fast like a spaz, just use the reset trick to get all the emeralds with the first checkpoint and then go right ahead.

I appreciate the advice, but to be honest I already knew about the trick, the reason I didn't mention it is because to me that not only feels like cheating, which makes the playthrough not really legit, but it goes back to the issue I mentioned with pacing, with the playthrough being kind of a chore at the start, since you're on the hunt for the Chaos Emeralds, playing Special Stage after Special Stage, and suddently speeding up by the middle and end, especially since you have Super Sonic which is pretty much impossible to not activate in Sonic 2 once you have all of the Chaos Emeralds, and that also sort of makes the playthrough worse in my eyes.

Lol. When I beat Sonic 2 (a year ago), I didn't even know there were special stages.
What counter-intuitive design to have them appear over a checkpoint only after you run through it.
Still have no idea how to get continues - 10,000 points from rings/time? Very confusing. Sonic 1 was much better in that regard. Also:

Let's not go rewriting history. Sonic 1 was the game bundled with the genesis (or Altered Beast) with 15 million copies sold to Sonic 2's 7.5 million.

I don't like the whole deal of the checkpoints being the access to the Special Stages either, I feel it messes up the pacing for the stages, I prefer how Sonic 1 did it, in between stages. I think continues were given when you got 10.000 point or more in a single act. I know Sonic 1 was the most bundled in title, but for some reason I feel Sonic 2 is talked about a whole lot more, and referenced as people's introduction to the character more also, don't know why that is though.

I never cared about the special stages as a kid, got filtered at the 3rd or 4th one like most people because I didn't have the patience/autism to memorize them, fuck 'em, I said, and unlocked Super Sonic via sound test cheat like all the chads.
There's a way to keep all the emeralds forever if you play in Sonic Jam, without any need to use cheat codes or save states. Just collect all 7 emeralds once, and then once you beat the game, don't turn the console off just yet, instead, let the game start again, but don't start the game normally from the title screen, instead go to options, and select the player (Sonic alone or Sonic & Tails) and start from there, it will take you to Emerald Hill Zone but you will see that once you get 50 rings, you can still turn into SS, the emeralds are saved, so you can just turn off the console as soon as you start Emerald Hill, and the next time you play simply select Continue saved game. Voilà, never have to worry about the special stages again unless you want to. (can access them through the special stage mode anyway)

I really prefer Sonic 2s bonus stages. The orb collection style in 3 I think is kind of annoying.

I can manage up until the 2nd or 3rd one, from the 4th one onwards it's just failure after failure, and I have to do my best to find the checkpoints while holding on to 50 rings multiple times per act, which completely messes up the pacing, especially since I'm playing in a cautious manner to keep my rings, it's a playrhrough that loses its identity since I barely go fast and enjoy myself, but I care a lot about 100% completion in titles I enjoy for some reason, so it messes me up. I don't care too much about unlocking Super Sonic, since he's poorly handled in Sonic 2, you'll probably get 50 rings at some point in each act, and well, you'll jump for sure, so you'll activate him all of the time, which I don't enjoy, especially since it only plays the invincibility theme and he can be tough to manage on tight platforming challenges over bottomless pits.

>>9048939
I didn't like Sonic 3's style either at first, but its grown on me, and there's one thing that helped with that a lot, which was Sonic 3's save system, I didn't have to be perfect, if I failed in my attempt, I could simply reset and reload my save file to try again, in Sonic 2 there's no built in save system, if you fail your attempt, it's back to getting 50 rings and looking for a checkpoint while holding on to them. When going for 100% in Sonic 3, you'll get it if you keep persisting, while in Sonic 2, you might get to the point where you're at Death Egg and you didn't get everything, no way to go back and try again.

Oh, also. I love Sticks.

I sort of wish there was a hack of Sonic 2 that added a save system like Sonic 3's and nothing more, I've heard of Sonic 2 Absolute, which looks wonderful, but it adds things like other modes and even achievements which look somewhat cumbersome, and I know that the completionist in me would go after that anyways sadly.

I've found a few hacks which look nice, but they always add more stuff too, change sprites, add bosses and levels, other features from Sonic 3 and I have nothing against that, but I really wish there was a hack that kept Sonic 2 intact, since it's pretty much perfect, and just added a save system identical to the one in Sonic 3.

I quite enjoyed her in the Sonic Boom TV show, more than I though I would, but then again that sort of goes for the whole show, I had no expectations of anything good and I was pleasantly surprised by it, it was well written and funny overall, still, my favorite is still Amy Rose, always will be, but Sticks was lovely too.

Why does everyone like Amy Rose now? Is it zoomers or just the final stage of acceptance?

Why do people like nu-amy over her superior original design?

I don't know, though I've always liked her a lot for some reason.

>>9049139
Well, while I don't dislike Amy's classic design, it was too similar to Sonic I think, her modern design's changes, especially with the spikes, makes her more unique.

I had the same problem, now I love half pipes. Play 2 Absolute.
The draw distance is much better in the mobile Taxman ports, the only part where I had to memorize anything was the second part of the last special stage.
On the other hand, I dislike how special stages in 1 are harder now.
The third one seems almost to be a matter of luck.

Sonic 2 Absolute really does seem like the definitive version, the inclusion of achievements isn't exactly to my liking, but they don't seem too bad for now, and it does look a lot better to 100% overall, from the videos I've watched the player's visibility improved significantly so the bombs aren't that much of an issue compared to before, also love how it's 16:9 which helps to see ahead of you and keep those 50 rings you need for the checkpoint. I'll look into downloading it, I'll probably have to use Wine to run it or something along those lines, but it should work fine.

I recall the 3rd one in Sonic 1 being quite tricky even in the original version, it was by far the most open one and for the style Sonic 1 went for, that made it more difficult, usually it's a lot of corridors and you'll be fine as long as you follow the trails of rings, but when it's open like that, while it's easy to know where your goal is, getting there is another story, trying to get anywhere really, since there's little to jump off of, and when you finally get there, the rotation makes you fall and you have to get back there all over again, easily the worst one in all of Sonic 1.

Amy thread is always the best thread, it's nice to see a fellow man of culture.

Sonic 2 special stages are garbage beyond their technical marvel value, I just ignore them entirely cause it completely ruins the experience otherwise. I liked the ones in 1/3/CD/Mania though. The half piple formula works well in DS with touch screen, even better with a transparent pipe like Colors.

I wish I could just ignore them, but it's tough for me, whenever I got for a run of one of my favorites, Sonic or not, I prefer going for the good ending if I know there is one, but yes, it does sort of ruin the experience for me, because unlike other Sonic titles I can't just pick this one up and go for a 100% based purely on what I remember and my experience with it, because the memorization to succeed in the Special Stages has to be near perfect and even then some of them are still tough, so I have to play for a few days in a row just to have a chance of going for a single 100% run, which by that point just burns me out somewhat.
