Nothing, RPGs weren't good until Final Fantasy IV came out

This. By today's standards, an RPG like Ultima IV is boring and pretty much unplayable.

Speak for yourself. Played U4 during lockdown and had the time of my life. It blew my mind in 2020, I can see why it was revolutionary in the 80s

Garriott pretty much invented the certain open world formula we see in games today. Be it good or not but Ultima series was a pioneering one especially in the 80s. Some retards just cannot understand the historical context.
At this point digital entertainment isn't anything new and it's pretty established in terms of it's own history and trends and whatnot. I fail to understand why especially 4chins is so full of retards who have no idea about this at all.

Ultima 4, 5 and 7 are considered some of the best CRPGs of all time, by people who ya know, actually play the genre. Underworld and Ultima Online would pioneer different aspects of the medium.

Even with their historical context aside - U4 is wildly influential - they still remain thoughtfully designed and invoking in terms of worldbuilding.

I have no idea why Ultima and Wizardry are so scorned by zoomers.

I played it for the first time like 6 years ago (so long after it was relevant) and also had a blast with it. The approaches you could take and the ways that you could abuse the system were fun.

>> No.9052927

I didnt expect Ultima IV to be a basic text adventure with required typing combined with the RPG elements which was a pleasant surprise. I've not seen many games use this method before it became menu selection.

Which game should I start with? Which is the easiest and has the most fun combat? I just played PST (I made the thread), I don't have patience for bad combatright now, which I have heard VII has. Are IV/V like roguelikes, in that there is much text and you are left to your imagination? What version is the best? I thank you in advance kind stranger

Technically, 1, but it's very basic, you'll most likely want to start with 4

5 but play 4 first.
> Are IV/V like roguelikes, in that there is much text and you are left to your imagination?
Pretty much
> What version is the best?
IMO, any version that doesn't fuck with the composition of the original soundtrack, so NOT nes
C64 and Amiga and Apple 2 are all fine versions for 4. For 5 it's either Apple 2 or C128 (64 didn't have enough ram for the music and amiga had completely different and shittier music for some reason)

I downloaded and started playing VII and after struggling with the ettings and controls I figured it oiut and I am really enjoying it. It's funny how easy it is to steal everything lol. Is training mostly strength viable?

>> No.9056281

>>9055882
Are you playing the expansions? If so, you don't really need to train anything, but str until you get to the expansion content is fine. For the non Avatar characters, strength is probably the most important because nobody else uses magic anyways.

Those don't matter because every single modern game needs to use the crappiest elements from RPGs (level grinding and RNG).
The problem people have with RPG games is they don't appeal to the majority of tabletop RPG gamers or video gamers, but mostly their own group: RPGfags. Later vidya RPGs have more crossover appeal but you need to be a big spergy RPGfat to legitimately enjoy most early CRPGs.

>>9048879
>It proved that the RPG genre could be so much more than murderhobo simulators
Part of the game is really good (the open world adventure game part), and the rest is a typical munchkin-em-up in boring mazes with way too much garbage combat.

This is an intensely personal issue that you're pretending is a problem with most people. It's not.
