What's the best way to play it these days? Just emulate PS2, or is that modded definitive PC edition that came out a while ago better?

I found the modded PC version to be great. I really don’t like pcsx2 though so I may be bias. Also was the only version that could run on my 10 year old laptop

Honestly I think a lot of the hate sh2 gets is kind of overblown, the ceiling boss and the abstract daddy are kind of underwhelming I guess, it never occurred to me that the regular enemies were such a huge dropoff from 1, I guess there's a little more variety with the demon dogs and phrydactals but those were really just harassers nipping at your heels same as the crawling windup enemy in 2.

desu I find the recent hate against 2 to be kind of overblown,the only thing that really stood out to me on my last playthrough was the ceiling and abstract daddy bosses being a bit underwhelming. People act like the regular enemies are such a huge drop off from 1 but it never occurred to me, they felt like the filled the same role of annoying harassers perhaps with more rigid theming.

I don't know how the game emulates, but you need the PS2's thick fog effect and the 60 fps prerendered cutscenes so PS2 is the best version.
Get the Greatest Hits version to get extra ending.

Only thing bad about PS2 is the flashlight effect. It looks like shit.

the only notable downgrade in the pc version is a slightly nerfed fog, it's there and it works but it's not as good. that is a shame but the graphics of team silent's games benefit so much from the bump in resolution that I'd say go with pc.

In Water makes the most sense, James is in Silent Hill for a reason. The Leave ending is just too overtly positive but I can see why people would choose it though In Water should be the canonical ending, and given some comments in SH 3 and 4 it does seem to imply that it is.

yeah you should play 1 first, 2 isn't directly connected but it plays on your expectations given by the first game and it sort of functions as an intermission between the connected stories of 1 and 3.

obligatory noob tip for sh1: Midway through the game you'll come to the area in pic, you need to complete a sidequest on right side before you cross the bridge or you'll get a point of no return and the fail ending. very inexplicably harsh and easy to miss
