Why is this generally considered the best Mega Man game? Usually when I see discourse about the NES games, this one is barely ever criticized. I've always personally enjoyed the 2nd NES trilogy due to its' faster pace, better level design and music (IMO). Thoughts?

It's the best-selling MM game, so if you've played one of them you've likely played MM2. More people to defend its honor than like, MM&B. I do agree with most criticisms made in this thread.
I think it's main advantage is that there's more room for shaking up the boss order, since the damage match ups are a little more varied than usual. A lot of the classic MM games have just 1 weapon that a boss is weak to, while the rest does basically nothing.

Second trilogy started after SNES had been released.
Mega Man 1 was good, but wasn't a big hit thanks to shit boxart / marketing.

It's the easiest Mega Man NES game (if it's American version) and I believe was the best seller, and it's especially easy if you know to get Metal Man's weapon first. So lots of people have been able to enjoy/beat it compared to the others. Also more recently it was on the NES mini.

I wrote a mini-essay about this in a similar thread a while back, but the gist of it is that MM2 does a great job of encouraging the player to actively engage with the game's non-linear structure through its levels and bosses, forming a strong bond between the player and the character they're controlling—especially if they're at an impressionable age. Stages like Quick Man's feature deliberately 'unfair' challenges that force most newcomers into attempting easier Robot Masters instead, but this ultimately works in the game's favor by lending all eight initial stages a high level of gameplay connectivity that rewards the player's intuition ("That time-stopping weapon would be perfect for those lasers...") without removing those stages' difficulty entirely—note how most of the 'hard' stages make the player choose between using their intended weapon on a stage element of the boss itself. Combine this with some effective setpieces, amusing easter eggs, and one of the best endings on the NES (if not gaming as a whole), and you have a surefire recipe for a game that, if nothing else, sticks in the minds of its players. Later titles in the series would feature more balanced stages, more fluid controls, and more 'professional' level design (and I'll freely admit that I reach for 3 or 4 far more often than I find myself booting up Mega Man's second adventure), but they've never been able to recapture MM2's unique charm.

That's a good point on the boss order. There's so much variety in terms of some bosses having two or even three weaknesses, some being replenished by certain weapons (does that even happen in any other classic MM?), one boss being more weak to his own weapon than any other, also feels like there are a lot more outright immunities as I can't really recall bosses in other classic MM games no-selling weapons, but I might just be misremembering on that one. Plus the weapons and especially items can drastically change the feel of certain levels. These all make the game a lot more replayable. The weaknesses in the first MM are still pretty fun to figure out for your first time playing because they're so intuitive and actually make sense, even if they're pretty generic and lacking in freedom, but MM3 and on it feels like the weaknesses are arbitrary and just going through the motions.

This is a minor thing for most people, but I like the way MM1 and MM2 'snapped' from scene to scene (like from death to respawn) as opposed to the fades that became standard from MM3 onward. The death sound from MM3 onward blows. These two things (and the soundtrack) do so much to give MM2 a sharper, more arcade-like feel that make me choose it more often than other entries when I feel like replaying a MM at random. Thinking on it, I'd love to see if it were possible to add the 'snap' and death sound to the later NES games with patching.

Two things. It was the first "real" Mega Man game, with MM1 being more of a test run for the formula, very unpolished. Second, it had easy mode and metal blades. That moved the game from Mega Man's usual "Nintendo hard" to "actually beatable" for a kid, so a lot more positive memories would be associated with it.

I'll disagree heavily on the stage complaints (I like Waveman's stage setup and LOVE Gravity/Charge/Darkman 3 &4) and somewhat on the weapon complaints (Power Stone and Water Wave genuinely suck, but I enjoy messing around with Gyro Attack and Gravity Hold).
