Didn't see a crt thread so I figured I'd make one. Thank you so much to the anons who pointed me in the right direction for BNC to RCA converters. Finally got this little guy running. Is there a general guide for how you should set color, contrast , brightness and tint?

still having issues with my vga monitor from the last thread ;_;

it drops sync unless i daisy chain an unnecessary adapter into the signal
i would imagine that its boosting the sync signal

how do i do this on my own?
i tested various other systems/adapters they all have the same issue

dreamcast looks great on it
i want to build a small setup in the corner as its technically the newest crt i own (2008)

Would there be any impact on the signal quality if I tried cutting an S-video cable and soldering it back together? I want to daisy chain video switchers together and I just need some short ass cables to do it, I was able to find some 3'' RCA jumpers for my purposes but I haven't been able to find an S-video cable any shorter than like 3 feet. I thought about just buying one and cutting it short and soldering it back together, but if that'll result in shit quality I'll think of something else.

Accidentally posted in the crt shader thread, reposting here...

I got an hdmi to component adapter so I could hook my gtx 1060 pc up to my samsung CRT TV. I thought it'd be as easy as nvidia control panel custom resolution, but nothing I do works. I tried custom resolution utility but it doesn't work. I have no clue what I'm doing wrong.
Most frustratingly, I actually -can- get nvidia control panel to display a correct image...Only during the test dialog. Soon as I click yes, it flickers and then it goes back to not working.
I'm at wits end. If I could just force nvidia control panel to not do whatever the FUCK it's doing after it tests the resolution it'd work fine.

These settings work until the test dialog finishes and then it's back to a jumbled mess.

Use CRU for resolutions and specifically for the output of the CRT.

Restart and then select the resolution for that specific monitor either with ArcadeOSD (google it) or under "List all modes" in Right click desktop > Display Settings > Advanced > Display adapter properties for... (for the HDMI component converter).

If you deleted all the 31kHz modes and just left 15kHz, the TV will always show a 15kHz mode anyways as long as the display is enabled in the monitor properties in Windows. Things like RA will auto switch with CRT SwitchRes on if you make several modes (240p 60Hz, 288p 50Hz, 240p 59Hz, etc).

>>9027343
>>9027383
You have to play around with the mode, just putting in 320x240p won't be enough most of the time, you can adjust front and back porch and other timings to get good geometry without having to mess up the TVs settings (if it's already calibrated).

Also is that what you're trying to do: >>9027287 ?
Unless you have a PVM or later HD consumer set that specifically does 31kHz, do not send 480p into it, only send 240p/288p, you need 15kHz not 31kHz, it can actually damage the set.

PVM is a Sony product line. The fact that the words that the acronym stand for can be applied to other companies' products doesn't really mean anything.
These types of professional video monitors are typically referred to as production or broadcast monitors, with pvm used specifically in reference to the product line.

What I'm saying is that that's accepted colloquially in new(er) retro gaming circles. And even then it's a relatively new phenomenon. Even as recently as a year or two ago people were very deliberate with their wording. Now everyone seems to know only three terms, trinitron, pvm, and crt.
In film production, if you rent a pvm from a rental house, and they show up with anything besides a Sony, the rental house isn't getting paid.
Similarly, if you rent a bvm, and you're delivered a pvm, someone's getting fucking booted off the set. Even though the bvm is a professional video monitor, a pvm is likely missing very important features.
All I'm saying is that the terms are specific.

If anon hooks it up to a computer anyways, he can just use composite filters if it's still too sharp.

>Computer monitors are still very sharp and aren't gonna blend dithering. Those things were made for work, not gaming.
Not really, a 600 TVL 14" shadow or slot mask monitor is going to be less sharp than the a 9" or even 14" PVM, specially if it's a AG like Sony's.
They still blend dithering if you use composite too, which almost all have but I'd recommend one with at least RGB if you want to hook it up to your modern computer.

as long as it has a high enough horizontal frequency, you should be able to. that said, it would probably be better to go for 5x integer instead since the highest most monitors go is 1600x1200. there's like, one 4:3 sony monitor that's higher and it'll be fuckexpensive if you can find it. using a lower resolution than a monitor's maximum will have a little bit of a scanline effect, but as long as it's above like half the resolution it won't be very noticeable. also if it's just integer scaling 240p games pretty much any monitor will work just as well.

Considering you'll be running at 60Hz to keep compatibility with /vr/ games without having issues like double images, you only need a 83kHz or better monitor, which is very low end for VGA PC CRTs. Just create a custom resolution that size with CRU and you should be golden.

Your plan is to integer scale and use shaders?

>since the highest most monitors go is 1600x1200
Monitors just have horizontal and vertical frequency limitations, most monitors are 120Hz, those better Trinitrons you talk about are 160-180 or uncapped in vertical and at least 85kHz in horizontal, usually 120kHz+ even. As long as your resolution + refresh rate fits inside those limitations, you can display it.

>using a lower resolution than a monitor's maximum will have a little bit of a scanline effect
Using low resolutions on a high pitch CRT will always, 480p will have scanlines too on a high pitch CRT.
You won't see any scanlines at 960p though even on a CRT that have a maximum resolution on 1920p.

luck is a factor. if you get a CRT that's verified to work correctly it will probably only have issues you can fix through the service menu, if not just the user settings. if you get a CRT with failing capacitors and apparent symptoms of it, there's nothing you can do about that without opening it up, but that's not super likely.
for PC monitors newer is better pretty much, for TVs you want something from the early aughts with component input.
look around in your area for free shit, if you don't have *any* CRTs, even a small composite-only set may be worth picking up.

If you only have a controller, maybe something like Kodi with a low resolution theme, worked great on original Xbox when it was still XBMC. If the RetroArch media player doesn't cut it for you. Doesn't support super-resolutions but just make a normal 4:3 480i mode for it.
You could use a script that launches Kodi every time you quit RetroArch and if you quit Kodi, it launches RetroArch, so you can easily switch between them.

What problem do you have with outputting 15kHz without RetroArch? Should work like any other resolution, you shouldn't even be able to output more than 15kHz on a properly configured setup for a 15kHz TV.

What is a good shader in RetroArch to use for outputting 480 to a VGA CRT monitor?

So far bilinear is kicking ever shaders ass, but I haven't tried them all yet. All the CRT shaders look terrible, eagle etc just look ridiculous.

>> No.9050894

Try the CRT shaders in the crt and preset folders, see which ones you like.
If you're going to use 480p, use a higher resolution, like 1440@60Hz with integer scaling, so the shader has more to work with. Otherwise at 480p the results are pretty lacking, you can add scanlines but that's it, but it will look even worse than a sharp PVM.

Kind of, Super Resolution is usually a wide resolution for aspect ratio correction, i.e. 2560x240 what I mean is just 1920x1440 for example. Just integer scaling to a higher resolution and then using shaders so the shader has more pixels to work with.

got an 80s set from a dog shelter, beautiful and working but reeks of dog and dirt. the back smell was gone after a shower and the front should be doable with wipes and some coat, but what can i do about the inside? don't want to discharge it so can't touch anything. already blowed it with a dryer, sprayed a bit of disinfectant, and now leaving it out on for air. bag with coffee grounds? lemon zest? anything.

You're really gonna want to scrub the dust out of it if you want to get the smell gone.

If you don't want to make a discharge tool then just let it sit for a good 2-3 days to make sure it's completely discharged on its own. To get the crap off the circuit board move it to somewhere with good ventilation and brush everything off with a non-conductive brush like a paint brush or something. Multiply everything on the left *and* right by 2 in that picture and then click the INTERLACED checkbox on the bottom-right, you'll see that it automatically cuts everything on the right in half. Press OK and reboot, you should have a 480i mode afterwards.

Windows might not let you pick it though from the normal resolution list, you might have to open Display Settings by right clicking on the desktop, then and scroll down to Advanced Display Settings, make sure your TV is selected on Choose Display and then click on Display adapter properties for Display... and from there List All Modes, you should see it there.

If that doesn't work, Google for "arcade_osd" and use that to change to 480i, make sure you drag it onto the right monitor (your TV) and select "attached to display" first though.
RetroArch should work automatically if SuperRes is on and you launch a 480i game.

Interlace depends on drivers though, not all GPUs driver support it anymore. But you said you had a 1070, that should work fine.

Good luck and have fun! Also thanks to you we also know that MiSTer VGA cable works well for this purpose.

Yeah, super wide 15khz resolutions solve the dotclock not going low enough problem, though some complain about issues with Intel and Nvidia cards like tearing. I'm running VGA to Component from Intel HD 4400 myself on GroovyArcade (Arch Linux) with no problems. Also had limited success with a HDMI transcoder, but it doesn't seem to do 480i right and it threw off GroovyArcade's automatic setup. The hard part is sourcing a transcoder up to the task, the one often recommended from a guy on ebay is always out of stock, had to buy mine locally. SCART transcoders seem to be more common.

considering left has crushed blacks and right has washed out blacks then yes, I'd say it wasn't calibrated to each of those signals

The only things needing calibration is your monitor you're viewing the picture on, apparently. There's no crushed blacks whatsoever, viewing on my 10bit calibrated (4 months ago last time) monitor.

he just didn't think it necessary to change his set up between examples

Where's the argument? All I see is bitching. I think you fucked up your post.
The fact that you claimed crushed blacks on the left already discredited you, go home and eat some smegma, faggot.

Ironic, as he states in the video you posted about how blacks crush when not viewing the actual CRT

use electrical contact cleaner, it comes in a spray can, if its good for cleaning sensitive electronics, like dirt and oil on a mass air flow sensor on a car, its good for your crt board.

Still nobody rated my picture quality. By the way I took the picture at an off centre angle slightly to the right. I want to know how my CRT looks compared to others.

Anyone have any idea what the service code might be for my 21 inch black diamond (mitsibushi)? Can't find the service manual, and every code I've seen online hasn't worked.

Don't VGA CRT's have access to all service settings in the menu?

In that photo? Looks like shit. The first photo is better, the picture looks OK in that one.
You know, it's really hard to judge how well something looks in a photo that itself is shit. Take some better ones, use a better camera, a tripod, experiment with manual settings, whatever. It's not easy to take a good photo of a CRT, but you should have no problem getting better results than what you posted.

it worked, but the image needs to be moved a little bit to the right.
I've tried changing the numbers on the left in CRU but it didn't change anything, sadly I don't have the remote as well

That's how it actually looked in the second photo. I was messing with a composite shader with that one.
