S24:
>Rondo finally.
>Devil Dice: highlight of the season
>Pokemon Snap? More like Pokemon Snooze
>The Fireman was okay, and a change in pace of style of games
>Finally some Sailor Moon!
>Quiz no Hoshi - the return of quiz games.

Overall: good season

S25 review:

>Zelda was okay, nice to see Arino mostly go it alone and figure it out just by writing hints down. Nowhere near as conufsing as some vr posters claim it is.
>3 PS2 and 1 GC games was really nice and breaks up the 2D platformer monotony
>Earth Defense Force was okay, only played on normal and the frame rate hit single digits at parts. Gameplay is a bit samey.
>Tokyo Bus Annai was probably one of the highlights of the season. Arino had some trouble controlling the game with the PS2 controller, and wonder if a wheel would work?
>Finally did Axelay, a 2D shooting game
>Faxanadu: finally! Nihon Falcom and Hudsonsoft classic.
>Batman: finally, and a very solid challenging title.
>Ico was alright, but a kind of challenge free easy game and a bit of a bore

Hoping S26 has more saturn and dreamcast titles to spice things up since PS2 got so much attention last season.

>since PS2 got so much attention last season.
I really don't see how they can keep up the show's concept on PS2 titles.
Almost nothing on it is made with completion being the challenge, by then gaming had completely shifted to "Let's make a fun story and everyone can see the ending".
Not to mention anything good is 20+ hours long.

heh. He's saying "Tanku controlli". Is he literally saying "Tank Controls" or some Japanese word that is similar? I think it's interesting they'd adopt the English terminology. I also heard the narrator call it a "survivor horror" game. I believe most of the 90's material called these horror adventure games.

My process for Half Assed Machine Translations is pretty simple, if a bit inefficient and boring.

First I knock out the low hanging fruit, the Japanese Closed Caption file. It covers 98% or better of the spoken text, UNLESS that line is also written on-screen for emphasis. This is about 80% of the episode on average. I just run the line through Deepl's moonrunes to american translator. In 75% of cases, the line I get back seems good enough, and it goes in. If it comes out kinda gibberish, I run it through Google's moonrunes to american translator. This usually covers the remaining 20%, but the last 5% is still gibberish, and I need to check each individual word to figure out what the fuck is being said.
The second step is the remaining 20% of the episode, the on-screen text. I try to use Qtranslate's Text Recognition to get things, but I usually need to double check the line to make sure it got every character correctly, since it rarely does. Sometimes it will just crap out entirely, and I need to manually create the entire line character by character. For this step I use wikipedia's Hiragana and Katakana pages, and sljfaq's multiradical-by-type Kanji lookup tool. Looking up Kanji is the most time consuming and monotonous part of the entire process.
Last step is to go through it line by line while watching, to check and see if anything looks horribly off, or the timing is nonsensical. And now I'm doing .ass files, I'm gonna try to do some better formatting.

The Playstation 1 and 2 consoles have an amazing library but it's probably also a licensing nightmare to fuck with because a LOT of games were made by third parties and not all of those third parties survived into the future and even if they did it's doubtful they're exactly eager to dig up and do paper work for their old games.

>I did find it crazy how well he did in Resident Evil by comparison to something like Sonic the Hedgehog though.

I think it's momentum controls which is also why he struggled with mario games and racing titles. Resident Evil games are perfectly logical and less about execution. You just search around, find the items, solve the puzzle, find the ammo and find the guns. By the time you get to the boss you have all the solutions so execution matters less.

Similarly he breezed through Legend of Zelda by simply writing down the hints. Where to go next is perfectly logical.

And then games for babies like Super Mario World and Super Mario Kart are struggles.

current 1.18 minecraft and you knew nothing about the game? 30 hours maybe?

their version from 2017? that feels like forever, since you only got 1 ore per block unless you had luck enchantments. tons of farming

Hmm, I also realised I think he played the Director's Cut or at least a non-longbox version of RE1, so he had the snap aiming. I think that makes the game considerably easier (when you don't have to frantically spin to try and hit that Hunter that's going to take your head off).
I've only played the Longbox & Saturn version so it might seem harder in my memory.

Yeah, it was the Director's Cut version of RE1 that he played.

The Japanese version of Biohazard always had auto-aiming. It was only removed in the first American version, along with it becoming harder. It was for rental reasons. Mikami explained this.

Oh yes, I had read this before but forgot that the Japanese release never actually had the manual aim.
Kind of interesting they made the Saturn version based on that release with manual aim. I suppose it was like a year later, so they figured they might add some more challenge.

It was usually one new episode per month, but it looks like one of the GooseCanyon members left the group recently, so things got slower.

And yet Mikami added the black comedy character inpisred by Eddie Murphy to Dino Crisis. He's just awful and would have been just as annoying and awful in RE1.

Watched the Golden Axe episode last night with the English Kotaku dub. It wasn't as bad as it might have been actually.
You can tell it wasn't easy to do, with them having to mute the sound entirely to put the dub in, probably because they didn't have access to individual audio tracks. The English announcer isn't too obnoxious either and just kind of mirrors what I imagine the Japanese guy says.
I do find it odd they keep calling Arino 'The Kacho' instead of 'Chief'.

The English narrator is not bad, but he's a bit game showy. the Japanese announcer has a lot of seriousness and gravitas. In earlier seasons they ham it up a bit too much in the writing, but most of the time it's written like some documentary.

Page isn't loading for me, tried a couple of browsers.
Are the DVDs still selling via those distributors though? I wouldn't mind picking one up but don't want to pay reseller prices.

Entirely possible that it blocks countries that they don't have rights to distribute to.
