9028850 No.9028850 [Reply] [Original]

This is a thread for video game anime adaptions that were originally video games and then adapted into anime.

One such video game is Makendo, localized as "Kendo Rage" for the Super Nintendo. It followed up by the video game Makendo 2, which was a fighting game. Incredibly, the series received a OVA adaption in the form of a 26 minute anime.

Isn't it strange that a video game series got such an adaption when other much larger and more popular video game series did not? Such a strange case for video games.

Perhaps because Makendo is a video game series focused on a young girl and they felt that a video game series such as that was marketable?

>> No.9028875

was it always intended as a multimedia project?

it's possible that a video game such as Makendo was intended as mutli-media, where it was more than just a video game and could be adapted into anime or even live action.

It certainly has a very anime like designs, story, and setting.

They probably wanted to promote the game better and make it a full franchise, that's what OVAs and some anime shows serve for.
The only thing interesting in it, however, was the henshin scene.
The game wasn't that great either.

That's the reason many anime exist in the first place. Even many popular ones are there just to promote the sales of the manga, which is where the real money is.
Also you can find the most absurd OVAs in the late 80s-early 90s. There's a Power Dolls OVA, and even SHMUPs got some.

I always liked how random Sega games seemed to get anime adaptions, Panzer Dragoon, Virtua Fighter and even Sakura Wars which was apparently really successful in the west since people cosplayed characters from it during the time it was releasing, despite the games never coming here until 5.

I'm always surprised by the Tales of games that received anime adaptations, Phantasia, Eternia, Symphonia and Abyss. Seems like a series like this would've attempted one and left it there, but they've done 5 or 6 counting non-retro ones.

The FF OVA is very weird and looks like it was just a side project handed to others without any thought put into it by Square themselves. It would have been much better had Sakaguchi directed it. yes, he absolutely should have been directing little anime shorts and videos like this instead of the idiotic Spirits Within. If they had just made "Final Fantasy: The Anime" film in 2D animation in 2001, it would have done okay and made some profit.

They should have also made anime adaptions of each of the games too. I can see each game being its own season. The later games like FF6 would have enough plot for mutliple seasons.

Yeah, I know. Sakaguchi and Square felt they were real film-makers and got too ahead of themselves. Funny too that many of the FF7-8 CGI FMV are in fact "film maker 101" type things (how to montage, transition, etc). Meanwhile the Spirits Within is pretty bland visually.

This was clearly just a failed attempt at a franchise. They really were trying to push it as an animated series, promotional video and everything, but they either botched the delivery (stupid premise of a reverse Isekai with Popful Mail appearing in modern Japan) or because the fantasy anime gimmick was saturated at the time with stuff like Slayers and Lodoss War.

Digimon really is such a weird franchise. As a kid, i only knew about the original lcd pets the usa got and then the anime and then assumed everything else in the franchise, including video games, were just based off of the anime. Years later i delve deeper and find out there were games that predated the anime, and it was really only outside of Japan where those games (digimon world) had nothing to do with the show and in fact the show took elements from it, but the western release occurred after the anime was airing and even advertised it on the game case.

I could be wrong, but it seems like all of the anime series are just adaptions of the monsters and "lore" bits from later lcd pets the west never got, rather then anime original characters like i always assumed. But the anime became such a big hit it seems like it did inspire the franchise going forward and there are elements that may originate from the lcd pets, games, card game and shows and just mix together as a true multimedia franchise. It gets even more complex then when you factor in the anime getting its own game adaptions and tie ins.

I really wish there was some guide that shows the exact original origin source of every digimon, be it from the lcd games, video games or original designs added into the card game, anime or something else.

Yeah, I'm fine with that. It's sorta kinda inspired by FFV, but not really. But it does not capture the feel of FF1-5 at all. There's manga that are done for these games and they're really cool. So you can make interesting adaptions of early FF material. Just that the OVA isn't it.

Actually now that I think about it, like FF6: Prologue would have been a better idea for an OVA. Before the release of FF6, you make a 20-30 minute anime taking place directly before the beginning of the game showing off Celes, Kefka, the empire, and Terra of course.

it may seem like a daunting mess, but it really follows a rather simple ruleset where digimon introduced in those earlier products would just be repurposed as needed in whatever following work they might appear, so the roster of the virtual keychain pets (i think this was the very first generation) was entirely or almost entirely imported into that of the digimon world game, with some given rudimentary personalities as well. the anime then built upon this pattern by giving almost every single digimon speaking parts and adding a whole dozen human protagonists instead of the one player in the ps1 game, with more of both added in every following season, game, movie etc; a "guide" to this wouldn't be all that interesting since the base pattern is essentially identical to that of pokemon or beyblade or whatever after the initial shift from digital pets to the ps1 game
what is pretty interesting to look at, however, is just how comparatively bare the keychain roster was compared to future incarnations as well as how vastly different the roles many digimon play in the following ps1 game are compared their subsequent roles in the anime (myotismon/digidracula comes to mind instantly)
apart from that initial shift from keychain pet line to proper shounen franchise, however, the following developments don't stand out from the norm of "new [product] -> more [content]" at all

>Utterly enjoyable trash.
After playing the Advanced V.G. games I watched it too and I couldn't describe this OVA better. Animation is cool, characters are designed by the very same guy who worked on the games (Takahiro Kimura, he also did Code Geass), but the story is yeah, utter trash. Also the special moves are depicted as completely OP here especially Satomi - why did she had to fucking MURDER Ayako? WTF Satomi.. And on top of it, the third and final episode ends abruptly without showing the duel between Yuka and Satomi, as if they planned more episodes but had no money or interest to continue the production.

Also Yuka is the best girl.

Dumb dumb dumb and can't into narrative.

They defeated the antagonist so who actually wins the tournament doesn't matter. They're both winners and both embody the spirit of the true goddess. I think the 3 eps means the story was rushed, and could easily work better at 12 eps, or maybe even 26. But the actual ending is perfect.

I just played this game to see what it was like. What a god awful experience. There's a delay in turning left/right, you start sinking into the ground if you stand still, if you walk for more than 2 seconds she bursts into a run and you smack into enemies, enemies spawn out of thin air right in front of you, it's possible to get stuck with a shitty power up and can't get a replacement. I'm hardpressed to think of a game with worse and more sluggish feeling controls.

It was VHS and LD only sadly, which means we are running out of time at making the best rip possible. Not perfect, but it's about as good as you can get with LD.

LD are also subject to disc rot so the time to rip these are running out.

It was actually written ages ago. Like in 2007.

https://www.wired.com/2007/08/castlevania-mov/

The reason the series feels so weirdly paced is because it was written as a movie and it appears that they just arbitrarily cut it up into episodes. So that's why each episode just seems to stop at some random spot. Alucard having gay sex has literally been the plan for over a decade because Warren Ellis, if you know his work from comics, is one of those types who writes like an edgy 15 year old.

Yeah like see i get there are "gens", like Pokémon based on "new lcd series + anime using new characters + video games using new characters", what i mean is, for the west, at least what ive seen, is unlike Pokémon, there isn't really a easy way to find out what "generation" each monster was introduced because we never got most of the lcd pets and were only ever seen in the western anime and game adaptations. Like ive seen wiki type guides state that Myotismon/Vampdemon and DemiDevimon were characters made as original villains for the first anime series, rather then first appearing as lcd monsters, which is hard to verify if thats true or not, i mean they are all owned as one big media franchise by Bandai regardless, but if this was Pokémon, fans would have a solid database of this info. Also stuff like the old man mon from Digimon World 1 and the anime, pretty sure he never was an actual lcd monster and was just made as an npc for the game but its hard to verify what his origin even was in any English format.

Oh, I know it was all about deception. Even without the FF7 connection, anime back in the 90s was still marketing on "DUDE IT'S COOL AND EDGY AND NOT FOR KIDS". Trailers for things like Slayers, Project A-Ko, and Sorcerer Hunters play them up as if they're pure action shows and not goofy comedy shows with some action moments. We're talking about an era where a company had MD Geist as their company mascot, and where ADV would end ever set of trailers with a sizzle real of HUH DO IT NOW.
It took until the Pokemon's success to really rip that bandaid off and marketing teams to go "ok ok that anime stuff can be more than just titties and explosions and blood"

>> No.9043024

>>9042978
It's probably because of confirmation bias. TV shows were generally a no go for licensing because they couldn't get the broadcast slots and most shows weren't suitable for syndication. That means they went with straight to video material like OVAs and movies which were by their very nature had more adult content being free from TV standards. But since that's the only thing we got at the time, the assumption became that anime was all about boobs and blood. Anyone who was there shares a lot of connected experiences since there were about 15-20 OVAs/movies that populated every video store anime section in the country. It also probably helped that it bridged a gap for a lot of us. If you were in the 11-15 age range in the late 90s the anime section was a great place to find cartoons that generally had higher stakes and adult content right as you were outgrowing Saturday morning cartoons. It felt like you were discovering something.

Castlevania was done by Powerhouse though I heard the American-made animation was so shoddy that a ton of it had to be redone in India.

He's a sportsmaster and he's under the misguided notion that seppuku is simply the most extreme sport that he hasn't mastered yet.

Also his full name is Harakiri Seppukumaru.

Interesting game, although the character's movement is a bit floaty and that grappling hook mechanic isn't as good as in, say, Bionic Commando. Got filtered by the very first boss though.

The mountains where Ray Magnus/the biggest Shabranigdu shard is sealed is the postgame dungeon where you play as the Lina clone with the name you entered and can use real Lina in your party.

Your party just kind of bumbles into his cave and he says some ominous shit but the Lina clone just thinks he's trying to hide treasure from her and murders him, then goes "what was that guy's problem". It's retarded as hell, and also the one and only appearance of the single most important character in the Slayers backstory in the entire canon.

It's funny since it uses 2 as a basis exclusively, so it's smack in the middle of the games where Irene shoots Ryu in the back and Irene grabs a machine gun and blasts at biomutants. But since Irene in 2 is pretty much just "Ryu's girl he rescues", she's the sweet girlfriend who is so shy and is soooooo scared when she has to use a gun to defend herself.
Was funny to me in a meta sense when those three OVA exclusive characters are thinking about helping and the girl of them is like "Yeah let's do this!" and the two guys share a smile and then tie her up to a chair and leave her behind because silly woman you're useless.

I watched the first two seasons and then didn't watch anything after once Alucard getting ass-fucked got meme'd. I didn't hear anything particularly good about season 3 either so it doesn't feel like I missed anything.

If the whole series was them storming the castle with Bloody Tears playing in the background, I would've creamed my pants.

>Make four seasons of Castlevania 3
>Skip straight to Rondo of Blood
I've only watched the first two seasons, but season 3 and 4 should've been Simon's story. Make it a JJBA-esque story that follows each generation of Belmont. Instead they just skipped straight to Rondo, probably so they can bridge it into Symphony of the Night for the Alucard fanservice even though seasons 1 and 2 already covered half of the important plot points from SOTN including him fighting Dracula who comes to feel remorse because of it. They're gonna fuck this up so bad

At least Castlevania 3 was legitimately gothic. Rondo is fundamentally a shonen anime at heart so this is going to be tonally wrong.

What's so confounding too is that the show isn't even all that visually interesting. Think of the number of enemies Castlevania has. Yet the entire show fills the monster roster with the same generic gray animal looking thing. This feels like a cartoon I would have been all over had it been on HBO when I was 13. Like Spawn, which also wasn't that good in retrospect but hit all the marks for a young teen. At least we got to see that cute redhead vampire's tits, I guess.

I'm looking at OP pic for a while now, since this thread keeps getting bumped.
The sheer desire of having anime high school girl sit on my face with her soft, peachy, fragrant butt grows stronger each time i look at it.
Is that really too much to ask? Is our world really that limited so we can't have such simple things?

I only watched the first out of three episodes of Salamander. IIRC it wasn't until 30 minutes when the three main characters came into the story.

I never played the games or whatnot. I just wanted to watch some sci-fi anime with character designs by Haruhiko Mikimoto.

IDK if the ramblings even served a point in the story/themes.
