I am biased but the original PlayStation is absolute perfection. It's pure functionality while being a timeless design. You could place it among 80s hardware or 2020 hardware, in the first case it would fit in perfectly, in the latter case it would mog everything else on display. Another thing I liked is that the controller perfectly complemented the aesthetics of the console unlike things like the N64.

I am surprised by how little RAM the PS1 needed in order to display its (at the time groundbreaking) 3D graphics. Generally speaking I am amazed to see how even new pseudo-16bit "indie" games still need like 2GB RAM in order to work while the actual console games they're aping were running on potato hardware. you're forgetting many things.
—4-8mb RAM was standard for a PC in 1995. PS doesn't have an OS like Windows to keep in the RAM at all time, so it can have more RAM just for games.
—video output was obviously lower res, same with textures, polygon count, etc.
—modern OSs are quite bloated, on an 8gb RAM machine Win 10 will occupy 3.7 gigs.
—note to the thing above though: modern OSs adjust to amount of RAM you have. they keep things in RAM to make access to them faster. same with apps—that's the reason Chrome will consume a lot of RAM, it basically stores whole rendered pages uncompressed in the memory for snappy switching between them, at the cost of RAM.
—modern indie games also will be written using many libraries etc, not just coded straight in C (let alone Assembly).
and so on and so forth

I know in recent years it has become cool to hate on the US SNES design, but I always loved it. That light grey tone mixed with the purple is just aesthetically pleasing to me.
I also find it weird that people obsess into hating this one "because the SFC looks better" and yeah... I dunno both look good IMO, but what I don't get is why the NES doesn't get more hate, as there is an actual huge difference with the Famicom (which I think looks definitely better).
SNES and SFC are about the same size, FC and NES are vastly different and NES is bigger for no reason.

It's the Saturn, but in terms of Design the Colecovision has had the biggest influence over the past forty years. It inspired the Famicom directly according to Masayuki Uemura, but it also seems to bear a resemblance to the PS2 slim, the Wii, and more recently the Switch. >I know in recent years it has become cool to hate on the US SNES design, but I always loved it. That light grey tone mixed with the purple is just aesthetically pleasing to me.

You know those teens that say they were born in the wrong generation because they think they're "more mature" than their peers? Or how kids do things they think will make them look like "big boys"? You're acting like them right now.

It probably was NextGen. I read that and others like Gamefan, Game Player's, PSM, Tips and Tricks, Gamefa, Nintendo Power etc.

You don't seem like a programmer, since you asked this question, but the answer is yes.
If you look up any example of assembly vs any example of a high level language, you'll see that the latter is WAY more readable. If it's easier to read, then it's easier to debug.
Writing in assembly is basically torture.

1. You're talking to 2 different posters.
2. I'm simply talking about how people felt at the time, not how I feel myself. I love the Gamecube but go back and find some forum posts around E3 2002 talking about Wind Waker, people were extremely upset about the look of that game at the time.

Yeah, I'm going with this one.
The design language worked well on all of the accessories too.

I would buy one of these if I had any confidence that the CD drive would still work. I'm not enough of an autist to repair one.
