It was really good for is time and the graphics are still amazing, but it is full of jank mechanics and the story just isn't there. It's extreme repetition from the beginning to the end. I still respect it for bridging the gap between rpg and action but it has aged extremely poorly.

Bart Simpson Vs Space Mutants for the Amiga. I was like 6 at the time and I thought it was the shit because it was a SIMPSONS GAME.

For my brother's birthday last year I sent him an old T61 running XP and bundled a load of old games we used to play. I tested them all to make sure it all worked, and, while it functioned, it fucking sucked.

picrelated. it's not "garbage" by any measure, it's still a great game, but I went from thinking this was literally THE greatest game of all time to just a good game with many flaws, that somehow loses in many ways to SMB3 that it's supposed to be a sequel to.
>just 2 powerups, one is useless and the other is clearly OP
>yoshi barely adds much to the gameplay
>clearly broken blue yoshi
>spin jump clearly better than regular
>no map items
>graphics resemble GIMP
>level design feels somewhat bland at times
>lost opportunity to make a real collectathon with dragon coins
I could go on and on. I still like the game, but as I get older, I look less and less positively at it.

Problem is hindsight. It was a great pack in letting you know what the super Nintendo was and what it could do. At the time it was a marvel but problem is that we compare it to games released afterwards. I do agree though that SMB 3 was more fleshed out.

Yoshi is still boring, the controls slippery, power-ups too all-or-nothing, visuals rounded and dull, themes altogether slack. The focus on secret exits should thrill me, but it’s all so bland.

I came to see if Mario World had changed for me in 23 years, no longer caught between SMB3’s precision theatrics and Mario 64’s astonishing dimensional breakthrough. But no, that Super Nintendo sequel spirit – extension, refinement, acceptance – it still haunts every jump.

Every year we get more polished sequels. Every year they are praised, loved. And every year I long for transgression, revolution, something strange and raw and radically new.

As long as you have tight controls and the mechanics are sound you can have a good game. Obviously you need decent music and level design and such, but having janky controls is the easiest way to make your game shit. This and Cool Spot are probably the dumbest concepts for a video game but the fact that they have sound mechanics is why they are considered classics.

>> No.9023713

>>9023648
Yeah, I agree. I still enjoy every game I liked when I was a kid, and vice versa. Maybe the closest thing I could say would be Warcraft II, which still isn't shit, it just isn't all that amazing from a gameplay perspective. I still realized that as a kid, since I actually played it just before getting Starcraft.

like I said, even when you compare it to SMB3 it's not exactly an all-out improvement. adding the interconnected map with saves is surely an improvement, so is the block physics upgrade. not the rest though, oftentimes it's just outright a downgrade from SMB3.
and even then, there's one important issue—lack of true, good innovation. SMB2 might have been a different game initially, but it felt fresh. SMW just rehashed SMB3, and in many cases does things worse. cape is just the raccoon upgrade, except broken. spin jump was actually alright on paper, until you realize that it can bounce on pretty much anything—spiked foes, fire foes, boos—, and at the same time, half the people didn't even use it. I already mentioned yoshi, he didn't introduce much to the game except a way to withstand one more hit, and there was nothing in the game designed specifically with his abilities in mind.
and don't even get me started on the fact that the music is just 1 melody for the whole game.

I'm replaying Crusader: No Remorse for the first time in over a decade, on second-hardest difficulty (usually played second-easiest in the past). Still love it overall but holy fuck even though I defended the tank controls in the past I will never defend the way this game handles again. Aiming rarely hits where it's supposed to while enemies can basically always hit you, every jump/fall is accompanies by a 5 second janky as fuck slowdown, elevators are frequently retarded, and you turn too slowly to actually out-speed/reflex enemies. If they made it for the Build Engine it would be a classic to this day, but making an action shooter on the Ultima 8 engine was clearly one of the worst ideas of the 90s.

That would be the Sakura Wars series. The hype was huge back then. It had combined efforts of a great character designer/manga artist, a scenario writer famous for animated shows, and all the funding Sega could bet the house on. The games ended out to be so bad, I am kind of glad Sega no longer has arcades in Japan and could finally fade away with whatever dignity it may still have.

I know it's videogames and I cannot expect Melville but the writing in these old Japanese games is so shit it legit gives me issues replaying them. It's such a level of shit writing that the only way to enjoy it is being a functionally illiterate child. JRPGs are the worst since they're supposed to be about story but everything else is generally written like garbage as well.
