The fifth generation of consoles, what a time to be alive. The twilight of 2D being the focus of games, but still getting some of the best 2D fighters, 2D action games around. Old titles saw great 2D installment and 3D was making its advent.

Playstation had big hitters like Alundra, Crash, Spyro, Klonoa, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7-9, Final Fantasy Tactics, Ghost in the Shell, Tomba 1 & 2, Ace Combat 1-3, Mega Man Legends 1, 2 & Tron Bonne, Silent Bomber, and holy shit the import library - it's phenomenal. Pushing 3D forward too with many 60fps 3D games.

Saturn had top class 2D and arcade style games like Sega Rally Championship, Astal, Panzer Dragoon, Zwei, the legendary RPG Panzer Dragoon Saga, 3D platformers like Burning Rangers, Die Hard Arcade, Virtua Cop 1 & 2, timeless fighters like Virtua Fighter 2 and Virtual-On and of course, the Saturn is famous for its massive Japanese library that you don't need any Japanese skills to play.

N64 had Mario, Zelda, the list goes on...

What a great time to be playing video games, don't you think /vr/?

It was the beginning of the end, worse gameplay for the shake of graphics and cutscenes. Yes, this generation produced the most popular installments of long-standing sagas like Mario, Zelda, or final fantasy, but not the best ones. Anything and everything you hate about modern gaming can be traced back to this period.

I think n64 is the best because its the only one i owned.
Also i didnt pick it out myself. I was a child.
Im not sure what is the best now. Because i only played shmups and light gun games on saturn.
And i dont get into ps1 that much. But its pretty solid.

Yeah it was great, N64 had much more than Mario and Zelda, too. Probably my most played stuff on it was Wave Race 64, F-Zero X and Goemon's Great Adventure. Oh and Pokemon League Puzzle, holy shit that one's good.
I probably prefer Saturn+N64 combo over the PS1. PS1 has a lot of good games but I realize my favorites of that gen are mostly N64 and Saturn.
Ghost in the Shell PS1 is very underrated though.

Loved my PSX and still return to it today but you're 100% correct. In many ways, we left 2D too soon and what a great loss to gaming that's been. Fifth gen is also when big publishers raped all the independent dev shops, team sizes got completely out of control, normalfags poured into the hobby, and said publishers changed the direction of games to suit a growing non-gamer audience.

I wish I had a Saturn. I also wish I knew the Saturn existed at the time. Maybe then I would have asked for that one.

PlayStation was good, but I basically really used it for FF, 1v1 fighters, demo discs, and sports games. Triple Play Baseball was fantastic and using CodeBreaker (basically another type of GameShark) for FF8 was definitely a fun experience after playing it so much. I had the most games for this one in comparison to the N64 though.

N64 was my main console even though I had more on the PlayStation. Mario 64, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, Diddy Kong Racing, MK4 (the ending cutscenes made this game, trust me), NFL Blitz, Warzone and No Mercy, Mario Party 1 and 2, Bomberman 64 and Hero, and a few others. I still play a lot of these games even today. It was easily my most played console of this generation. It's just a shame that this was the the following gen wasn't as good to me. Not counting the Dreamcast, without SSX Tricky and 3, THPS 3, Burnout 3, Ninja Gaiden, DMC, SCII (GCN for Link), Viewtiful Joe, RE4 and GTA SA, I honestly wouldn't care much about gen 6 at all. Then the only console I genuinely loved playing in gen 7 surprisingly ended up being the Wii.

The thing is that numbers alone aren't everything. Out of those 2000 or whatever titles there are for PS1, a lot are ports, shovelware or, if you're including jp-exclusives, there's a lot of "hidden gems" that are mostly text-based, like VNs, adventure games and the like. Not bad stuff if you ask me but barely contenders for "greatest games ever".
In terms of VIP games, N64 and PS1 have probably about the same amount.
It has nothing to do with brand recognition, in fact, people were very eager to hit on Nintendo every chance they got. There were a lot of articles about how the N64 was "failing" early on, despite games like SM64 getting great scores across all boards.
Then OOT came out and cemented the system as a VIP of the 5th gen.
And then it's not even just Mario and Zelda, lots of people enjoyed other games on N64, like the FPS, racing games, wrestling games... I get it, it's funny to paint the N64 as "mario, zelda, list goes on..." and it's curious to see how with a smaller library than the other 2, it still managed a position in the podium. But when it comes to actual good games, there's always 30 or so REALLY good ones per system, then the rest vary from decent to bad. N64 had some real stinkers but not as many as PS1 or Saturn had.
The same thing happens with NES and Master System. (although MS has some shitty arcade ports made by Sega themselves instead of original titles, Nintendo did a better 1st party work on N64)

>> No.9023037

>>9023024
Atari is too old.
Sega got more famous with the Mega Drive, Master System wasn't popular.
NES was a cultural phenomenon. If you got a NES back in the 80s, it didn't mean you were a "nintendo fanboy", it just meant you got the system that was en vogue at the time.
Are you gonna hate on the console that had Castlevania, Mega Man, Contra, etc?

No, it says they are older. Probably mid 30s and 40s. Obviously it says Gamefaqs is a spot where the majority of those who took the poll grew up more with Nintendo than the others, but whether you like it or not, nobody in their 20s is going to say they had the Atari 2600 as their first console. You need to take in the whole poll and make inferences on that. The fact that both SEGA and to a slightly greater extent Atari cracked double digits and Sony's playstation, the most popular console for two full generations, barely got over 5%, needs to be pointed out. That's why you need more than what you posted to make any type of actual claim other than "most people who still frequent Gamefaqs and took their poll grew up more with Nintendo, then Atari, then SEGA". Going into the "why" makes me think exactly that the demographic of Gamefaq user is older since none of the other data makes me believe this is from a younger, more modern generation.

But you said where I was going wasn't didn't say anything about demographics. Also the mid 30s-40 age group accounts for 64% of the people who took part in this poll (of which not everyone even took part in for your big poll since this both taken on a different day and is less than the total of the first one you posted).

Try making a poll that isn't as general because the poll you showed only shows that, again, the majority of people who go to gamefaqs and took the poll had a Nintendo console as their first console. Maybe try some that say "What is your view of the [insert company] " and do that for each of the companies and compare from there if you want to get a better idea of a consensus for bias. I'm not saying the people who for some reason still use Gamefaqs forums don't have a favorable view of Nintendo moreso than the others, but your poll is useless if the goal is to call Gamefaqs a "Nintendo haven" as you call it.
