Finished Cosmic Fantasy 1 a couple days ago
Battle load times were a bit ass but it was exactly the kind of simple RPG I was in the mood for so overall had a pleasent time
I played the English version of Comic Fantasy 2 back when that was new and now after all these decades I'm finally checking out the rest of the series

>Cyber Cross/Cross Wiber
Both fun little Vigilante-style walk along and punch shit games with a bit more platforming and you can HENSHIN into one of a few different colored rangers/Metal Heroes with their own weapons.

>Genji Tsuushin Agedama
Sort of a Chelnov/Atomic Runner clone with bright Hudson presentation and a whole bunch of charge attacks you have a gauge determining which one you do on release.

>Hana Taaka Daka!?
Tanukis took your fox gf, so you pray to a goofy tengu to fuck shit up, shmup style. Kind of a slowerpaced Air Zonk with nicely explorable stages, a lot of decent weapon options, and these dumb tanuki traps made to troll you that you can outsmart if you're good.

>Metal Stoker
Probably the most underrated game on the PCE, imo. Top down multidirection tank shmup where you can lock aiming direction, but a lot of stages are corridors and tight spaces you have to disarm as you go, and the game is creative as fuck in both level design and how you approach it, having you inching around corners and gunning stuff down stealthily. Interesting boss design at times, and there's a lot of em. I like this thing as much as Soldier Blade.

>Silent Debuggers
First person action as you explore an abandoned space station with your buddy in the computer room in touch by radio. Aliens mass in sealed off sections, and you've got to hunt them via your motion detector alone, it being all you can hear as you stalk the halls. Take them down and you can move to the next floor, take too long and your buddy has to jettison chunks of the station, limiting your movement space and access to weapon/life charging points. You've got a time limit that reduces if you die out there - you have roughly a realtime hour and a half to take out alien scum, find out what happened in there, and maybe find some sweet loot. Really effective for the time, might take mapping out and pathfinding, but an interesting survival horror experiment.

Well I finished it, spent around 3 and a half hours, most of it just exploring/learning mazes.
What an odd little game
What I'd heard about it made it sound like an item-based puzzle-solving adventure, and there is some of that, but some areas are primarily just mazes, and then there's a couple of boss battles at the end which might have been annoying with thi's games awkward controls except they were too easy for that to be a problem.
The solutions to the "puzzles" can be weird but the number of different actions you can take in the game isn't super high, and it has a fairly effective context-dependent "do stuff" button, so it's easier than it would sound on paper

Playable even without knowing Japanese (what little text there is in the game is all story-related and there's no voice) though you'll want some sort of explanation/translation of the useful bits in the manual like the controls and how damage and healing works.

Yeah, it's definitely an interesting one. It's far more Prince of Persia than Landstalker, especially how the fighting is just these little 1v1s. I'm sure a guide somewhere translated what dialog there was, but even then there's not much and most of what happens is easily conveyed.

Galaxy Keiji Gayvan (pronounced guy-van) is a good time. A single plane beatemup with small chibi characters and a slower pace, it might not seem like much at first but it's very Technos-feeling and has a lot of depth. Crowd control is the order of the day and you can buffer your base combo into throws which damage and knock over everything your target hits, you can OTG hit with your knee attack, as well as your usual get-out jumpkicks/sweeps. However there's a meter you build gradually, which you can unleash in a henshin mode where you gain quicker combos, more damage, and specials (halfcircle up to down in the direction you wanna do it and either attack for a boost ram or jump for an energy wave, both take out everything in their path) You don't have to wait for the henshin bar to max either, just burning 1 or 2 units for a special then going back to civilian mode is useful at times.

The guy (Hiro) seems to be the more capable character, the girl (Mittchi) seems to have a glaring weakpoint in her standard combo, but could be better in other areas, I didn't use her much. Stylistically it grows on you, the goons have a lot of personality, and jesus christ, the fat Guiles are amazing. Great game if you like beltscrolling gameplay tech, though.

Pretty sweet deal, although it seems like a tacit admission that Keith Courage in Alpha Zones wasn't really driving sales. Don't know why they chose such a meh title as the pack-in game when Nintendo had already shown them how to do it right by giving people Mario out the gate. IIRC they eventually bundled a Bonk game which was a much better deal but it seemed like Nintendo and Sega had to shame them into it.

Still, if I got my pick of R-Type, Devil's Crush or Legendary Axe with a new TG-16 I'd be pretty fucking stoked.

The town experience is better than the first game, with no more loading time entering and exiting buildings, and fast walking speed and diagonal movement. The battles are quick, and the battle load times are quick. And they used CD audio throughout the game for BGM this time.
All that is nice, but...man the actual battles are kinda bad, with the weird character selection interface thing, the lack of anything but basic physical attacks from enemies, half the boss battles being just a random non-boss enemy encounter, and most player-side spells doing less damage than regular attacks (except for ones that cost so much MP you can only use them like twice). It's giving me Phantasy Star III flashbacks of the battles dragging down an otherwise OK game.

Holy fucking shit, that's one of the best bundles I've ever heard. Of course, there's also the backhanded slap of

>if you already bought our insanely expensive console add-on we just rendered it obsolete but you can buy an add-on to your add-on which is not available in stores as our special way of punishing you for being an early adopter

I still feel like if they'd stopped trying to retroactively drive sales of the TG-16 with the add-on and just skipped straight to the Duo as a standalone they would have got way more traction. It sucks that an entire console generation had to fail spectacularly with the add-on craze before they learned their fucking lesson

I still wonder about the alternate universe where they beat the Genesis launch by a year or so. If its only competition is the original NES that's a whole different ballgame. They did just fine in that situation in Japan, and because they were already established there the Mega Drive didn't blow it out of the water like the Genesis did in the US. Not sure why the fuck it took them so long to get to other markets, that should have been part of the plan from day one if they were serious.

And the tragic thing about the CD is that it immediately resolved the issue about it not being a "true" 16-bit console and made it technically even more impressive than its competitors but since you had to already have the console before you could add on to it, and not many people had the console, it didn't matter anymore. NEC threw all its reinforcements at a battle it had already lost. Although to be fair it wasn't just them that fell for the add-on meme, Sega did the exact same thing only worse thanks to the 32X and Nintendo was planning it until shit went sour with Sony and Panasonic. Everyone was drinking the same Kool-aid back then.

It had the potential to be huge. Hudson designed it to be easy to program, cheap to manufacture, powerful for gaming with the cheapest ROM format. I was surprised to see the ending is somewhat different in the original than in the English version (major spoilers):
In the original game, when Van returns to that house after beating the last boss, Lara’s former caretaker acts as if meeting him for the first time—as if the first time Van visited that house never happened.
Van was actually never reunited with Lara at all because she died of illness a year before you get to the house she’d been living in.
The event where he “met” her and she gave him the pendant is suggested to have been some sort of phantom/illusion caused by lingering remnants of Lara’s feelings.

In the English version, they added extra text to that so the caretaker says “oh, you’ve changed” like she just needed a minute to recognize him and the previous meeting did happen, then gives him Lara’s letter and says Lara died “a week ago” (i.e. during the time you were off fighting the last battle) instead of “a year ago.” And Lara’s letter itself has this “sealing Galam’s power with the pendant will probably end my life also” line in the English version that’s not there in the Japanese. (This change doesn’t fit well with Galam’s dialog at the last boss fight, because Galam was both (a) surprised by the power of the pendant like he had no idea it existed (and of course, he never took it away from Lara all those years) and (b) after you beat him his dying words are “Lara still won’t come back” – the latter makes sense if she died a year ago, but not if it was caused by the pendant power that Galam didn’t even know about.)

Then finally, after that when you’re in the castle talking to the NPCs, the caretaker in the Japanese version gives her idea that “what you met must have been Lara’s lingering strong feelings” but in the English version she says instead something about “people say they see her walking through the sky, singing”
